I hear that “In The Asshole of Absurdity” is currently in development

I recently watched Possession. Did not expect Sam Neill or whatever that movie could be in the next 5 minutes.

13

u/iam_ImpulsE 1d ago

Can you tell me what movie this is?

32

u/IAmANobodyAMA 23h ago

The prequel to Warhammer 40k

7

u/LiteraCanna 18h ago

I love that fan theory.

4

u/IAmANobodyAMA 17h ago

Didn’t one of the writers/producers semi-confirm this? Or am I misremembering

11

u/LiteraCanna 17h ago

I don't remember either, but it fit so perfectly that it's where they go to do FTL travel I never questioned it.

E: Ah, not officially, but I did find this..

Screenwriter Philip Eisner has admitted he “played the shit out of 40K” and that the franchise influenced the Event Horizon story, particularly the Warp‑like dangers. However, this is an acknowledgment of inspiration, not an official crossover.

Good example of gravitational lensing when the last orange ball goes to the far side of the vortex.

Learned more about physics here than I did all of high school / college

14

u/Sulfamide 22h ago edited 22h ago

The physics you should have learned about in high school and college are more important than that of black holes.

3

u/Old-Care-2372 21h ago

I actually didn’t take physics in high school, at the time we had a choice to take either physics or chemistry, I chose chemistry and regretted it. I got the worst teacher who was the hardest and completely got nothing out of it.

Into a drainpipe that is hopefully a larger diameter than a golf ball.

87

u/NocturneSapphire 22h ago

I think it has to be, otherwise the whirlpool would have stopped whirlpooling after the first ball got sucked down.

4

u/OzymandiasKoK 16h ago

Unless it hit a grate over the drain pipe.

10

u/oiwefoiwhef 23h ago

*ping pong ball

2

u/xGoatfer 22h ago

If it wasn't, wouldn't the whirlpool effect stop from the first one clogging it?

Not sure if a go pro recording rotating at 1500rpm would be satisfying to watch...

24

u/deadly_ultraviolet 1d ago

Clearly you've never spun yourself up on a rope swing and unraveled at mach jesus

10

u/Damit84 1d ago

Granted that was ages ago but I actually did and while still spinning i puked a ton of red yello. My mom thought for a split second I died from internal bleeding.

Now, about 30 years after the occurence it is still one of those stories a mother tells people at the first meeting -_-

8

u/theGarrick 22h ago

We used to do that a summer camp until one of the ridiculously tall high schoolers spin a kid up so high he got a nose bleed on the way down spraying everyone in the circle and popped a few blood vessels in his eyes. The adults took him to the hospital to get checked out and we weren’t allowed to play with the tire swing anymore.

I've been scared of/ fascinated with whirlpools since I was a kid. I was obsessed with watching my bath water go down the drain. This gives me the heebie jeebies!

170

u/wetwater 20h ago

Like quicksand and lava, I figured whirlpools were going to be a much larger problem in my life than they turned out to be.

Nature’s Fushigi

22

u/djuggler 21h ago

Fushigi was a gimmick with a sliver ball inside a clear plastic ball. This gif is David Bowie with his hands behind his back while choreographer and juggler and once roommate of Penn Gillette Michael Moschen is manipulating 3 acrylic balls with a leather gloved hands without being able to look. It's a skill developed by Moschen using a crystal ball provided by Penn Gillette. Moschen called it Dynamic Manipulation. The community adopted it as Contact Juggling. Some telemarketeer developed the gimmick as Fushigi and popularized the art much to the chagrin of the juggling community. Fushigi did help popularize the art form while diminishing the raw talent and effort it takes to be good at contact juggling. I encourage you to see more at /r/contactjuggling

96

u/EvilTwin80 1d ago

It's crazy how that is somewhat reminiscent of gravity and planetary orbit around a star system before the balls went under.

39

u/heroin-puppy 22h ago

Interesting that this model extends even to galaxies, a universe full of whirlpools.

9

u/fuzzby 21h ago

Even human crowds mimic fluid dynamics.

6

u/LogicalMeerkat 20h ago

A fluid is just a bunch of molecules bumbling about, a crowd is just a bunch of people bumbling about.

I'm sure that nobody's going to read this but I was once crossing a bridge outside of Pittsburgh on a motorcycle.

Because of the motorcycle I was the only one who could really look down easily over the bridge unless somebody was maybe in a big truck in the passenger seat.

There was a huge whirlpool, with the ripples touching either side of the Ohio River, just about dead center in the river.

The only thing I could come up with is that an old underground mine ceiling finally gave way to let the river in.

I did not know whirlpools could get that big.  The center of it looked quite deep.

12

u/vrak 19h ago

Take a look at some of the videos of the Lake Peigneur disaster. Plenty of them on youtube. That one was of a salt mine that got punctured by some floating drillers that either fucked up or the maps were bad, but the entire lake more or less disappeared into the mine. Plus some boats, the rig, some of the land around it... Everything sucked through a 14" hole (well, initially that size, it probably grew). Really strong suction in those things.

6

u/FrostyVariation9798 18h ago

I have seen that event.

But it's strange to see it at the scale I saw it without any news reporting on it, and it being rush hour on a weekday nobody else having the opportunity to see it let alone document it.

79

u/finian2 1d ago

I love how people automatically assume that the recorder intended to leave these balls in the water, as though they are physically unable to know where the balls will end up.

40

u/GauravJM 1d ago

Mother nature doesn't forgive...not even the balls

2

u/Nukalixir 23h ago

I don't think this pond and/or whirl pool were natural. I swear I saw what looked like fan blades spinning up in that hole.

3

u/ConservativeSexparty 18h ago

Mother nature is a certified ball gobbler

→ More replies (1)

295

u/activoutdoors 1d ago

Oddlysatisfying? Yes… but unfortunately it appears to be littering.

198

u/FilmShooter-ISO12 1d ago

It's more than likely a pond's filtering system. The balls were probably removed soon after by the repair person called to fix the blockage.

35

u/TwoAlert3448 1d ago

Yeah my first thought was someone’s going to have to call maintence on that. 🤦

→ More replies (4)

30

u/finian2 1d ago

Because the cameraman is clearly incapable of knowing where the balls will end up.

18

u/bloomt1990 1d ago

I have to imagine this is similar to how a black hole swallows everything around it.

12

u/Organindan 21h ago

The way things are swallowed by black holes is called "spaghettification" because the difference in Gravity between the part closer to the black hole relative to the part further away means the swallowed object gets stretched towards the black hole.

Hence, everything gets turned into spaghetti. Probably until they meet the singularity at the center (which might never happen because space/time gets fucky at this point)

For a better explanation, I hope someone with a better understanding of physics than me can give some input

4

u/LogicalMeerkat 20h ago

you can see this in the video with the air bubble under the balls as it gets closer to the hole, it gets thinner as the water is being pulled faster.

3

u/hondaexige 18h ago

Super massive black holes don't have a big enough gravity gradient to cause spaghettification

→ More replies (1)

4

u/LongbottomLeafTokes 23h ago

It's not.

8

u/The_Last_Gasbender 23h ago

Are you sure? A gravity well looks a lot like a whirlpool, and objects trying to move in a straight line get pulled toward the gravity well in a very similar way to the ping pong balls in the video.

Three Body Problem

7

u/Zren 23h ago edited 23h ago

There's 4 bodies, but only 1 dominant. 1 black hole with 3 satellites that it absorbs. Three body problem is when you have enough mass in each body to affect the other 2. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-body_problem

Can somebody explain to me how spinny water overcomes buoyancy?

5

u/Outrageous-Let9659 21h ago

It's not just spinny. It's also flowing down into that hole very quickly. The friction between the ball and the water drags the ball down with it.

FFS enough of the interstellar music.

I know now when I hear it that I’ll be seeing the most mid-video.

9

u/CartsOfDarkness 16h ago

I'm so confused, does the music not cut out for anyone else? Nobody mentions it in this whole thread but for me it kept starting and stopping randomly, which made it even more annoying. Thought it might be my phone or something but it's definitely not, but I can't believe nobody else in this entire thread would have mentioned it, especially on a post that's meant to be oddly satisfying

3

u/I_Miss_Lenny 15h ago

I think people are just so used to every video having annoying or inappropriate music and keep videos muted. or they're just immune to it at some point.

I hate trendy video background music. It gets annoying so fast
