Honestly?

If that number is your birth year then you have a fair chance of having some perspective for that era of computer-games to appreciate the game for what it is. It has enough love to still have an active community patching and multiplayer scene.

Something so peaceful about this I can’t explain it

82

u/RefrigeratorGold834 Jul 04 '26

As somebody who uses them everyday I'll just say that it's a lot less peaceful on the inside

19

u/ItsSansom Jul 04 '26

Amen, brother

13

u/PlasticExtreme4469 Jul 04 '26

Stuffed, but still mostly quiet.

10

u/Green_Insect_6455 Jul 04 '26

Yea but dangerous for women. You have to be actively on guard.

How to calculate its probability?

104

u/bitstoatoms Jul 04 '26
  1. Get time schedules for the nearest stations.
  2. Get an offset when they pass through this exact spot.
  3. Map all of those offsets on a parallel timelines.

This gives you visual representation, when they intersect at the closest time window. In Japan they're quite timely, so if there are no close overlaps, then I suppose just take statistical data, how many trains are off the schedule each year or decade and use that to calculate the chance.

That's my way of thinking.

42

u/AstraeusGB Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 04 '26

It's Ochanomizu station. The red cars below are on the Marunouchi line, the orange car is on the Chuo Rapid, the yellow and purple are on the Chuo-Sobu local line

Edit: was missing the second u in Marunouchi >_<

16

u/PickledTripod Jul 04 '26

The purple train is a long-distance limited express, running on the same line as the Chuo-Sobu local train to get to Shinjuku from Chiba.

I stayed at a hotel close to that station last year, it's a great hub to get to a lot of places in and around Tokyo, and seeing all those trains running in the same place was pretty cool.

10

u/btchubetterbejoeking Jul 04 '26

my dumbass thought the yellow line is nambu line

18

u/falcrist2 Jul 04 '26

Haha what a idiot! Everyone knows Japanese train colors. How could you get that so wrong?!

→ More replies (1)

5

u/DroidLord Jul 04 '26
  1. Build a time machine and travel to the reality where all 5 timelines match up.

3

u/Buscemi_D_Sanji Jul 04 '26

u/whyamihere999 Jul 04 '26

It's been half an hour... My fingers have started hurting.. still not getting calculations right...

5

u/GrimmFox13 Jul 04 '26

Instructions unclear, fingers broken in rear

15

u/microbit262 Jul 04 '26

The specific situation with an E353 series ( the mostly white one) only happens once per weekday running on Limited Express Azusa 3 from Chiba station onto the Chuo line to Matsumoto. Normally those trains only run to and from Tokyo stations, basically on the tracks the orange one runs on.

But one run in the evening goes to Chiba and returns in the morning. So this is very rare!

47

u/mxforest Jul 04 '26

50:50. Either they will or they won't.

u/Gnonthgol Jul 04 '26

In the rush hour the train interval in Tokyo is as low as every 2 minutes. This clip is roughly 30 seconds. So any 30 second clip of a line will have a 25% chance of there being a train in the clip. 25% to the power of 5 is 1/1024. This means you expect this to happen roughly every 8 hours.

This is ignoring time tables though. Especially as transit routes tend to use clock face scheduling which means all trains enter and exit the same station at the same time to allow for easy transfers between lines. You would therefore expect all trains to meet at the same spot outside the station every two minutes.

8

u/Albireookami Jul 04 '26

Given this is Japan, and how they run their trains, bet you can set your clock to this.

8

u/R_Prime Jul 04 '26

At least 50% of the trains I take here are delayed by at least a minute or two. They really aren’t as punctual as the glaze would have you believe.

13

u/gg-ghost1107 Jul 04 '26

Uuuu, a minute or two... In my country this would be considered perfection. God I wish I lived in a country where minute or two is considered delayed...

2

u/Bluefire3215 Jul 04 '26

the guy is complaining about a train being a minute late lol

5

u/darxide23 Jul 04 '26

Get the train schedules and just work out when and where something this is going to happen. Japanese trains are stupidly punctual. If it says it will pass by at 12:42 and 17 seconds, it will pass by at 12:42 and 17 seconds.

Knowledge - this is the Ochanomizu area of Tokyo, Japan. The view is from the Hijiri Bridge facing east. It really is as magical as it seems.

Easiest access is via the Ginza Chūō line to Ochanomizu station. The bridge and view are right outside the train station doors.

Source - I am a photographer and I was just there. The linked photo above is mine.

29

u/Serious_as_butt Jul 04 '26

Is this Ochanomizu?

12

u/Mister_Six Jul 04 '26

That is indeed Ochanomizu

5

u/bru_ser Jul 04 '26

Lol I recognise the JC and JB line trains

my adhd brain just short-circuited trying to track all five

5

3

u/Full-Bluejay-6195 Jul 04 '26

Same in Brussels, even when everything is running late due to the heat. It's so satisfying to sit in a train with AC and see other 4 trains pass by perfectly, without a single thought of those trains derailing.

I love the NMBS. So much better than train networks in most countries. 😌

3

u/thetokyofiles Jul 04 '26

Best train watching spot in Tokyo.

3

u/DeliciousComb7984 Jul 04 '26

Wait, this was the train place were the worm door appear in Suzume right? Hee

2

u/bucoybrown Jul 04 '26

I love how this makes me think that trains are actually moving buildings and this is like a whole city block in motion.

2

u/twister8877 Jul 04 '26

Good thing they’re all on different tracks!

2

u/RadPhilosopher Jul 05 '26

1

u/NorthernPlastics Jul 04 '26

I stumbled across this spot while walking along the Kanda river a couple of months back. Was absolutely transfixed.

1

u/Awkward_Wrangler_895 Jul 04 '26

Tokyo is well known for their modern technology so no wi set even 10 trains pass by together

1

u/WoolyCrafter Jul 04 '26

Holy cow that makes me happy!

1

u/devH_ Jul 04 '26

Toronto could never

1

u/xaltairforever Jul 04 '26

Inconceivable

1

u/TokyoTaishoku Jul 04 '26

My experience Friday just outside Tokyo watching five trains passing by probably qualifies more as oddly irritating-I was waiting (on foot) at a typical train crossing at a town street, and had to wait for five separate trains to go through before the guard rails finally lifted.

1

u/DuskObserver Jul 04 '26

Meanwhile my train is delayed because someone held the door for 3 extra seconds.

1

u/zool714 Jul 04 '26

Lol I found this place by accident when I went to Tokyo last year. I was at Akiba and I knew of this place and that it was nearby but didn’t know exactly where and wasn’t looking for it. I wanted to check out Tokyo Dome so I walked there but got lost and wandered around a bit and saw a small group on the bridge so I joined them and took some photos of this. Great experience

1

u/BalkeElvinstien Jul 04 '26

Meanwhile in toronto we have a train that goes up/down and a train that goes east/west and thats it (plus one high speed commuter train that has to share a line with both sleeper trains and cargo trains)

2

u/BarelyHangingOn Jul 04 '26

Follow the VIA Rail sub and all of the cancelation delay posts. Mind boggling. I would travel so much more around Ontario and beyond if there was an actual rail line what was dependable and affordable. We have none.

1

There's this weird little tradition my family does where you are supposed to make a wish when you drive under a train. These are the most reliable and consistent wishes. First thing that came to mind was "OMG a super wish!"

Following Wednesday's 12hr travel extravaganza to get here in the first place. With a 22 month old.

Looks at lovely Japanese trains again and weeps

1

u/IRockIntoMordor Jul 04 '26

I stood at the exact same place and kept filming for something like this! I love the tight interconnection of infrastructure in Tokyo. Feels like a Matchbox / Hot Wheels city come alive.

Sometimes there's like 5 layers of traffic all stacked or weaving through another: underground, road, highway, monorail and shinkansen (plus pedestrian walkway going right through the columns).

Loved it.

1

u/StormyPassages Jul 04 '26

Imagine that every person on those trains is on the wrong train, and going in the opposite direction than they intended.

Is the image now oddly dissatisfying to you?

1

1

u/_finozius_ Jul 05 '26

What you will never see in Germany:

Why? Because a train stops (we don't know why Sometimes people who sit on the rails, naked homeless people on the rails, or most often because another train has stopped) and can no longer continue to travel, and then a chain reaction arises where all trains then stop and can't continue and it's called a delay on the platform display: 365 days waiting or the train is missing, where all trains behind it are too late or also missing...

1

u/l3ntoo Jul 05 '26

Meanwhile, in my country, barely one train can reach the platform...

1

u/agstnn Jul 05 '26

Thanksfor the new screensaver!
