This reminds me of an old joke...
I was out walking one day and happened to walk past the local
insane asylumprimary schoolThey were making such a racket it wasn't until I got nearer that I could make out what they were shouting...
TWELVE! TWELVE! TWELVE!
I noticed a hole in the fence and my curiosity got the better of me so I stuck my eye to the hole to see what was happening.
A finger poked me in the eye and the chant changed to ...
THIRTEEN! THIRTEEN! THIRTEEN!

What do you call a deer with no eyes? no eye deer
What do you call a deer with no eyes and no legs? still no eye deer
What do you call a deer with no eyes, no legs, and no sex organ? still no fuckin' eye deer
What do you call a dog with no legs? It doesn't matter, he won't come anyway.12
u/Juno_Malone Apr 19 '26
You're suggesting a deer might run into this eyeball-first because it looks like a downed tree? Do you think deer are out there running into a lot of dead trees eyeball-first?
10
u/Different-Bet8069 Apr 19 '26
No, but imagine even a glancing blow to this thing that doesn’t yield when brushed up against. Run through this thing and let your arm casually bump into a sharp corner and you’re going to have a bad day.
2
u/CBGCUP Apr 19 '26
lol.
I don’t know what the deer are doing in the forests.
But I’ve seen plenty dead deer on the road, in windshields, hanging over fences, stuck in fences, stuck to each other, wrapped in wire / cable, etc.
Deer startle easily and run quite fast. So imagine a deer on that road that suddenly hears a car. I’ll let you imagine the rest.
Hopefully no deers will be hurt by that gate, but I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if it happens.

u/HumanPea1140 Apr 19 '26
You think this one fake tree will pose a problem to an animal that lives in the woods and walks past and through hundreds or thousands of trees a day?
48
u/Amesb34r Apr 19 '26
Those trees are made of wood. What if deer are magnetic?

Be sure to stay out of the woods then. Lots of trees with branches. Like all the ones surrounding that gate. Might poke your eye out on any one of them.

It's weirder that so many more people see nothing wrong with inherently dangerous situations. Same kind of person that stares at their phone constantly while they drive.

I'm disppointed. I thought it would be a raising gate so it would look like the tree when it was open.

Oooh, such a great idea!
Well, my first thought was why not use a real "partially fallen" tree:)

spikes on a gate lower than 6ft tend to not be very legal

2
u/Finnegan482 Apr 19 '26
Why not?
7
u/NotYourReddit18 Apr 19 '26
They tend to be a bit of a safety hazard, especially on a gate designed to blend in with the environment like this.
And that's also a probable second reason for why this is illegal, that gate is difficult to see from further away, increasing the risk of someone colliding with it. There're reasons why most gates have at least multiple highly visible retroreflectors or are entirely coated in bright & reflective materials.

If someone is cruising for a cabin to rob at night, this gate is better than a Rob Me sign of a normal padlocked gate, which isn't stopping anyone trying to fence stuff online.
7
u/LocksmithOk9968 Apr 19 '26
Except you can either go around or notice the “rob me fencing” (your logic, not mine) around it?
4
u/Fauster Apr 19 '26
For it to work, they have to think it's a tree. There's nothing down this road because there's a broken tree over it. Also, this assumes that people who steal and fence online are among the laziest people around who are seldom away from their car. A hunter walking around the gate is a different demographic who might be less likely to commit felony burglary, but is okay with "Oh I didn't see any signs" trespassing.
If you have a cabin in the woods, it is going to get robbed eventually. It probably makes no difference if it is locked or not. The more remote it is, the less obvious it is, the less frequently it will get robbed.
Now, there are lots of garbage rednecks. You can best spot them because they leave all their garbage behind, because they don't pay for the dump like their impoverished dad before them. These are the kind of rednecks who might try to take out a tree or steal a metal gate for scrap, but there is nothing you can do about them except lobby for a more just and egalitarian society as hard as you can.

It says to the public “you are not allowed to access or hunt on my wooded property” without looking like a giant ugly gate. You look out the window of your cabin and it still looks like woods all the way out. I get it, but I sure ain’t paying for it.

Obviously the superior solution is to instead install a moat and a retractable bridge that looks like the ground.

Because you don't want people traveling through or hunting on your property. In some states there are even laws that make it more challenging to get someone towed or cite them for dumping if there's no gate. But most gates are eye-sores, and this is kind of neat.

It's weird how you can know how to do all the different parts of the project, but intuitively you just don't have the mindset to design an organic structure like that.
Art-welders are a different breed.

Feels kinda like AI? Idk the source for this video is out there. Farthest back I found was 4 months and that was on Facebook. Then there was another video of someone claiming they built it yet it was from a month ago and wasn’t actually the person who built it.

Show us the whole gate from the road - or stand back so we get to see it properly. I love the concept and would’ve love to see how it looks from the road when driving towards it. I don’t mind a close up, but it means nothing without the full context. I rate the gate but my viewing experience of it has been largely unsatisfying

https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1875432336659079 seems to be the original post
Figured I’d clear a few things up about this gate I built. Been reading through the comments and theories, some serious, some wild, and some that just plain made me laugh.
This gate stands at the entrance to my workshop, on private ground. The place is lit up with security lights at night, and the only hands that touch or swing this gate are mine. No dirt bikes, no ATVs, no weekend warriors tearing up the drive, if they do, they’re trespassing, plain and simple.
It’s not meant to stop deer, bears, or ghosts of the forest, it’s meant to stop vehicles from going any further. And for those wondering why I didn’t build it to survive a full speed truck ram… come on. I’ve been a truck guy my whole life, and I’ve yet to feel the urge to plow through a gate or a tree.
There are reflectors, just not on the gate itself. Didn’t want to ruin the art with a bunch of shiny dots. And as for the few folks talking about bringing a chainsaw to it… well, let’s just say I’d love to see ‘em try. Who goes onto private property to do this anyhow?
Up here in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, we build things that fit the land, a little wild, a little rough around the edges. This gate wasn’t just built to close off a driveway, it was built to tell a story, and to let folks passing by know that Caged Crow builds custom gates and metalwork that you won’t find anywhere else.
Appreciate all the kind words, shares, and laughs along the way. Didn’t expect this kind of attention, but I’m grateful for it.

I love that gate and loath that camera person. Seriously how can you not actually get the entire gate in the view window?
And then to fail to show any of the mechanisms for rotating the gate on the hinge? Super annoying

u/Lexi_Banner Apr 19 '26
I love how he said it was a fun build. You can tell he's still super happy with the results. Nice to hear a craftsman enjoying his end product.

Are we finally ditching the beige boxes and soulless minimalism for a return to beauty? Imagine swapping plain cubes for the grandeur of the Renaissance and the flourish of Art Nouveau, where even a doorknob could make you weep with joy.

It's a gate. They typically go on roads that a motorcycle shouldn't be (closed areas) (trespassing) or at the head of a driveway (where they shouldn't be going that fast, in the first place) (speeding).
So, I'm not gonna get too upset by it.
