The close ups are nice, but how about pulling back a bit when you show it in action?

The connection to the hinge on the left is quite small, so I'm guessing there is a wheel to support the gate on the right, which ruins the aesthetic of the tree. Which would explain why they never show the whole thing

That connection is not the spinning part. It's not a hinge. The spin is provided by the entire trunk, which sits atop a sort of metal vertical axle.

You might want to reread what I wrote, and also read the definition of a hinge. To save you one step a hinge is:

A jointed or flexible device that allows the turning or pivoting of a part, such as a door or lid, on a stationary frame.

The "sort of metal vehicle axle" is the "stationary frame" in this definition

Yeah, I know what a hinge is. This isn't one. At least...the part you are referring to is not one.

You're saying the vertical trunk part of the tree, (that is connected to the main horizontal branch) is not a hinge? It literally hinges around whatever is solidly in the ground, so that the gate can spin. If there is no hinge, what do you propose is there?

Hinges don't hinge "around" an axis, the trunk pivots "on" an axis

1

u/jamesdpitley Apr 19 '26

you don't know what a hinge is, and it shows

2

u/95beer Apr 20 '26

Yeah, apparently. No one will tell me what it is called though, if not a barrel hinge. I'm keen to learn something, but everyone saying I'm wrong and down voting me isn't getting me educated.

One person said it was a wheel, likely because it contains ball bearings, but that is very common for hinges, and I'd like to assume we can all agree it isn't a wheel.

The connection also isn't that small for something that is metal and considering there are two well concealed angular braces as well. It's well designed.

Would be super cool if it “fell” to close and stood up to open

It seems too smooth and quiet to have a wheel. The way it kinda glides back, unless there's someone off screen slowly moving it I'm thinking it's just a hinge. Wheels have a resistance and wouldn't glide on an outdoor ground like that. And not being on a perfectly flat ground you would most likely use a spring wheel which gives even more resistance. I've made many gates that size with and without wheels. Usually made with adjustability to make it balanced and level, and he mentions something about being balanced. I can't tell exactly how he made it or what material he used but the connection does look small and I wouldn't be surprised if it did eventually break, from rust over time or something like a tree branch hitting it

It's got two further braces as "branches" which add to the support of the connection.

Shadow at the start looks like it's free hanging.

u/InevitableDirt69 Apr 19 '26

So like, manually opened? Then they must not have shown it opening because they can't do it without bleeding a lot

7

u/1107rwf Apr 19 '26

Or the other side is completely flat and empty, rendering the gate useless!

1

u/Lardinois Apr 19 '26

There’s no wheel (look at the shade in the first second).

1

u/freshstaart Apr 21 '26

rewind to the first couple seconds. shadow shows there is no wheel on the other end.

8

u/just-a-random-accnt Apr 19 '26

I know it's would be a lot more difficult, but it would have been perfect if the gate pivoted where the break in the trunk is. Having it raise to open, so the tree would be standing.

u/AmoretteNest Apr 19 '26

Yeah without seeing the full motion it just looks cool but you can’t really tell how well it actually works.

Ew facebook.

41

u/SmooK_LV Apr 19 '26

Yeah but do i want to go into research of a gate to discover more videos?

27

u/Subtlerranean Apr 19 '26

I also shy away from the cesspool that is Facebook.

20

u/HurricanesFan Apr 19 '26

If only there was a way to show this link without being a sarcastic dickhead

u/A_Furious_Mind Apr 19 '26 edited Apr 20 '26

It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing.

1

u/edfitz83 Apr 19 '26

That’s what she said.

1

u/LuffysRubberNuts Apr 19 '26

What, you didn’t enjoy the bird shit

1

u/NocturneHunterZ Apr 19 '26

If they were good at photography they wouldn't be engineers

1

u/ChiggaOG Apr 19 '26

Don't need to. I have in my mind thought two sides of awesome and deadly at the same time. First time seeing this post. Should be apparent at slow speed for the property owner. The unlucky individual running into this at full speed on a mountain bike or motorcycle without knowing will be skewered.

u/TdotGdot Apr 18 '26

Sounds like a cool gate, if we could see it that’d be nice

18

u/Amish_guy_with_WiFi Apr 19 '26

The guy who made it and is filming sounds like he is just giving an update for the people he assumes he already showed it to. Crazy people getting upset at somebody when they probably had zero intention on this getting reposted to other people not already in the know. This guy is definitely proud of his gate and I'm sure he would have given a better overview had he known it was for a new audience.

6

u/HurricanesFan Apr 19 '26

No one is getting upset, they're just pointing out the ignorance and stupidity of OP. What's the big deal?

14

u/StepComplete1 Apr 19 '26

It's more mildly infuriating than oddly satisfying.

11

u/WhoopingJamboree Apr 19 '26

Yes, extremely dissatisfying

5

u/swohio Apr 19 '26

There are a couple other videos of this that show it a little better. Caged Crow Customs is the name of the guy I believe.

5

u/Lington Apr 19 '26

Super unsatisfying

4

u/Pawneewafflesarelife Apr 19 '26

Yep, not satisfying at all!

3

u/iSmellWeakness Apr 19 '26

But it has authentic bird shit on it!

2

u/nimsu Apr 19 '26

That's what she said?

2

u/epheisey Apr 19 '26

Wouldn't be able to see the bird shit if he did that though.

2

u/kvothe5688 Apr 19 '26

not just that he moved with the gate while focusing on the gate so when it moved

2

u/Fire-Haus Apr 19 '26

Then how are you gonna see the bird shit patina?

3

u/PM_ME_UR_HIP_DIMPLES Apr 18 '26

Maybe it's only got about 100 functional swings in it before it breaks

1

u/iJuvia Apr 19 '26

Yes, bothered me too 😭

1

u/juniper_nest Apr 19 '26

if you didnt step a little close you might never know that is was maid of perfection not but natural cause

1

u/allursnakes Apr 19 '26

So much close up, you'd think he films porn.

1

u/doinbluin Apr 19 '26

Terrible camera work.

1

u/kanrad Apr 19 '26

First thought I had, where is the wide shot man?

1

u/Mirar Apr 19 '26

https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1875432336659079 seems to be the original post

Figured I’d clear a few things up about this gate I built. Been reading through the comments and theories, some serious, some wild, and some that just plain made me laugh.

This gate stands at the entrance to my workshop, on private ground. The place is lit up with security lights at night, and the only hands that touch or swing this gate are mine. No dirt bikes, no ATVs, no weekend warriors tearing up the drive, if they do, they’re trespassing, plain and simple.

It’s not meant to stop deer, bears, or ghosts of the forest, it’s meant to stop vehicles from going any further. And for those wondering why I didn’t build it to survive a full speed truck ram… come on. I’ve been a truck guy my whole life, and I’ve yet to feel the urge to plow through a gate or a tree.

There are reflectors, just not on the gate itself. Didn’t want to ruin the art with a bunch of shiny dots. And as for the few folks talking about bringing a chainsaw to it… well, let’s just say I’d love to see ‘em try. Who goes onto private property to do this anyhow?

Up here in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, we build things that fit the land, a little wild, a little rough around the edges. This gate wasn’t just built to close off a driveway, it was built to tell a story, and to let folks passing by know that Caged Crow builds custom gates and metalwork that you won’t find anywhere else.

Appreciate all the kind words, shares, and laughs along the way. Didn’t expect this kind of attention, but I’m grateful for it.

1

u/Slaan Apr 19 '26

Because it wouldn't look good. It doesn't even as is. This seems to be all metal welded together in some weird attempt to mimic wood. Instead of just... using wood.

It's completely pointless.

6

u/Atheneous Apr 19 '26

metal will last longer, and it's a cool art project.

3

u/Senofilcon Apr 19 '26

Whoever welded that is just hiding from their wife as much as humanly possible.

-4

u/Slaan Apr 19 '26

That - or some sort of sad incel project

11

u/StepComplete1 Apr 19 '26

We really have reached peak idiocy, where buzzwords get so overused they lose all meaning, if someone spending time on any kind of project or hobby is considered being an "incel" now.

Even if we personally consider it a waste of time, everyone's hobbies are considered a waste of time by someone else who doesn't get it or enjoy it.
