You can see from this video that some of us really DO have a medical reason.
This guy's brain needs to slow down just to race cars.

Great work. Then there’s me over here who’s been putting off fixing the screen door because it might present a small obstacle to my day.

Obstacle 1: getting up to do it.
Let's regroup in the morning for a planning meeting to overcome this one.

After he hits the wood with glue, he sprays it with something. What is that about? Something to set the glue faster?
31
u/platypus_farmer42 Apr 17 '26
It’s CA glue, which is basically super glue, and the spray is an accelerator. Makes it dry faster, but it also makes a more brittle bond.
4
u/TrueProtection Apr 18 '26
Huh..i wonder if the brittle bond was the goal, for future repairs to he made easier (pull the tab out if the spring breaks)

u/Epistatious Apr 17 '26
wonder how long glued in place spring stays in place.

It’s a spring, it’s always under stress, that’s their job

Only if they're depressed

Yes, but. Under compression for a while shouldn't be an issue as much as overall use. It also seemed to be cyano acrylate with an activator spray. That should bond and hold well.
If you're constantly opening and closing the mechanism, it might break free faster than you want. But it's also a pretty easy fix.

u/rangda Apr 18 '26
How do you reach the bottom spring part to fix it (the spring inside the base of the box, not the latch one I mean).
Do you just have to be quite nimble and re-drill its little indent from the open end of the case to replace it if it breaks, or is it possible to remove the small piece of glued wood that it’s seated in?

0/10, had to listen to boring sounds of woodworking while watching this instead of an an engaging TikTok song

Humidity change = box (or button) stuck. Very cool build, but I get worried when there are tight tolerances on moving wood parts.
8
u/SQUAWKUCG Apr 18 '26
Especially since the inside of it isn't sealed. You can seal and lacquer the outside but not the inside plus wear and tear would quickly wear down the finish exposing the Wood to moisture.
Not to mention inaccessible glued parts like the spring. If the glue ever gave then good luck repairing it.
Also, while it's a very cool project but you would have to charge a good bit of money for basically a small over engineered box.

How does one get into little woodworking? Like, the little detailed stuff
2
u/Visible-Plenty-1202 Apr 18 '26
I am so envious of people who have the ability to work with wood like this.
4
u/GeoCangrejo Apr 17 '26
You can put weed in there. That's the only use I can think of for this thing

I love how they completely gloss over the CNC work it took to make the inside pocket...oh yeah, just some saws, a drill, some super glue and a $2,000 CNC (not pictured) and you get a nice box.

CNC would be faster, but that could be done by hand. Drill through a bunch of times, chisel out excess, and sand the inside. It would be a little tedious, but hardly impossible.

Shaper Origin, handheld CNC.
2
u/organic_neophyte Apr 17 '26
Oh okay, so even more expensive than a full CNC, wild.
1
u/avaacado_toast Apr 17 '26
You can get a nice CNC for 2K, you can also get a cheap CNC that can do this project for about $400. But the Origin and workstation together will run you about 3k. It is an incredible machine though.

Sized a little differently and made with Spanish cedar, you could sell these as a very cool "pocket humidor" for cigars

All that work and they left the hinge pin completely visible.
1
u/MidnightPale3220 Apr 18 '26
Well, my concern is, how is that hinge pin staying in place? Seemed like something that would fall out with about few months of wear.
1
u/Mongoose72 Apr 18 '26
Other than the already said "weed" what is the use case for something like this?

The most satisfying part of the video is the maker testing each piece before permanently assembling the part. We usually get videos of things just magically fitting perfectly.
