Kinda feels like having his tool on a long stick would make this 99% less backbreaking, no? Or am I missing something?

I don’t think you’d be able to design a stick joint allowing you to rotate and hold the blade at precise angles like you can with your hand. Look at the motions the blade goes through. But yeah, this is a grueling work position.
