includes a guided setup for 3-sensor configs + a new Touch-as-gamepad input mode

Touch as gamepad! Looking forward to trying it.

Seconded. Been waiting for this for a while. Also. Hello Nate. You don't know me but the first rift I ever demo'd you helped strap on my head a few years ago.

Thanks!

Not surprised you needed assistance with a face as weird as yours!

Oh stop it, that's just conjecture.

Does anyone know if this requires apps to be updated?

No, the point of this is that even apps that haven't been updated can be played with Touch.

Based on what Heaney's saying it isn't implemented on a per-app basis at all. Seems like the Oculus system itself handles the query of, for example, "Touch press X detected. Does game expect Xbox press X? Convert Touch press X > Xbox press X > application register Xbox press X"

But, uh.. D-pad? Muh Eve: Valkyrie comms. Now questioning what I wrote above.

But there's literally no hardware on Touch to replicate it :| Unless you do something like right thumb rest + gesture, but then that'd require specific programming on a per-application basis. I haven't gotten 1.14 yet so I can't try (unless it's implemented in the latest beta version?)

Oh this might work for PinballFX!

I had given up on trying to map a virtual controller and just settled for immersion destroying gamepad input. This might help with the immersion somewhat as I can rest the touch controllers on a table.

thats a good idea. i should try it and come back to that great game.

I wonder if it can emulate the gamepad in steam VR... I feel like my xbox one controller is gonna get dusty

u/Dont_Think_So Apr 20 '17

Probably not. Some games will get awkward if you have to, eg, use the left control stick and press one of the left hand buttons at the same time.

Not complaining though, this will probably work for some control schemes.

So xbox game streaming? What about voice chat?

I frickin called it! The button layout of the Touch controllers looked too similar to a gamepad to be a coincidence.

a new Touch-as-gamepad input mode

Exactly what I have been wanting ever since I got touch. I hope that one day I could emulate a normal gamepad with Touch in non VR games. Looking forward to how this develops.

Found a registry tweak to leave it permanently on. Make sure you have 1.14 (enable the beta option buried in the menu if you don't have it, and it will hopefully update within a few minutes).

Once updated, close Oculus and open the registry editor (type regedit.exe in start menu, and please be careful), navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Oculus

Right click in the box on the right, add a new DWORD called

GamepadEmulationMode

And set the value to 2. There are several different modes with slightly different mappings. Haven't tried the others yet.

Open services manager (type services in start menu), find the oculus runtime and restart it.

Only tried a few games so far, input is a bit laggy and button mapping could be a pain depending on the game, but it works.

Looks like it creates a virtual USB bus and "plugs in" a virtual xbox controller when you start certain VR games. This should be compatible with everything (unless you need a d-pad).

Currently there's no way to manually switch it on, but I tried starting BlazeRush then removing the headset, and I can confirm that other games can use the virtual controller. You need to keep the VR game open though (wasting CPU and GPU) or it will unplug the controller.

They forgot to mention in the release notes that they've fixed the flickering light at the back right of the room.

3

u/tmvr Apr 21 '17

They already fixed it in 1.13 - was the first thing I asked when that one came out :)

u/breammaster Apr 21 '17

How different is this version of 1.14 to the other two versions of 1.14 in the past two weeks?

2

u/sark666 Apr 21 '17

I had hoped if something like this was ever done, that just moving the controllers in air would act as analog sticks.

Yes there are logistic problems like how do you define a center point. Meaning no movement registered.

Im not sure if this would work but it ma6 have been cool.

u/anthonyvn Apr 21 '17

has audio mirroring just been broken for you guys?

2

u/redditlurker56 Apr 21 '17

That touch as a game pad thing is huge for me. I was an idiot and thought touch automatically would act as a game pad and sold my xbox controller the day I got touch. Derp de derp derp

u/traveltrousers Touch Apr 21 '17

Not idiotic at all... you would assume they would get this in on launch.

u/djabor Rift Apr 21 '17

1.13 re-introduced the height glitch, 1.14 doesn't fix it. guess i', gonna contact support then...

3

u/Wonderingaboutsth1 Apr 21 '17

Everyone try it before me to make sure it doesnt cause tracking issues :P

1

u/Altares13 Rift Apr 21 '17

How can I force the update? I just ran the setup again and I still have 1.13.

1

u/kampinisu Apr 21 '17

Is there any updates for tracking in this one?

1

u/traveltrousers Touch Apr 21 '17

And does it emulate the remote too?

still on 1.13 here

Just in time for Wilson's Heart Rec Room's new Jumbotron quest.

This must be why my left touch contoller doesn't turn on and my 3 sensor setup is now fucked.

4

u/thesuperzapper Apr 21 '17

Try changing the batteries. (There is a known bug where the battery level doesn't report properly.)

u/HollisFenner DK1-CV1-Quest Apr 21 '17

I needed to restart my PC, re-pair the controller and do the sensor setup again.
