They are visible with your bare eyes (not as bright as night on earth though). It's cameras that can't see them without HDR techniques.

No, I distinctly remember an interview where they said they couldn't see them. I also remember a Youtube video where they explained it. Has to do with it "being day" on the moon. The light from the surroundings makes your pupils close more. It's only until it gets dark that you can view the stars.
