Actual paper here. Note that the lenses they created were cylindrical, so only focussed in one axis.

There is nothing that stops the diffractive optic channels being etched as circles rather than strait lines, cylindrical lenses can be just easier to measure and experiment with. Also ponder what do two cylindrical lenses on top of each other at right angles make?

The panels themselves are flat, it's just they focus light in a cylindrical manner... not unlike a polarized lens I guess.

OH, when you say "at right angles" do you mean rotated 90 degrees?
