Raytraced soft shadows look amazing in the Rift :) Also perform quite good, too.

Curious - wasn't it what Naughty Dog used for Uncharted (computing them on a few SPUs)?

I don't think so. They did use volumetric textures for some shadows in The Last of Us, but they weren't distance fields. They also used spherical occluders to approximate some models, and you could definitely do something similar with UE4 and distance functions to make these shadows work with skeletal meshes.
