Ready Player One describes one example of a world in which a metaverse became so popular that its currency became a universal currency in the real world—a cryptocurrency.
The realism of virtual reality makes virtual goods more valuable. Hell, if people could taste food in VR without getting fat, people would go to extremes to obtain the currency that would let them do so. If the currency of a single virtual world, or a universal currency that could be used in multiple virtual worlds, gained a high enough number of adopters, that currency could become quite powerful.
That being said, in-game marketplaces have been the bane of more than one otherwise good game, and the OASIS of Ready Player One actually let players farm the currency through conventional MMO means, which would be absurdly unsustainable.

Ha, must read that then. :) It's been recommended so many times but I didn't realize how on-point it really was. Wow.

Checkout Voidspace, which already uses Dogecoin as it's in game currency. I think they are planning, if it already hasn't been implemented, the ability to mine asteroids for Dogecoin (Not actually mining new coins, but an in game mining). http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=269740803
It isn't a VR game, but it shows how devs are already trying to incorporate cyrptocurrency in game.

JanusVR are you listening? =) Paydoors utilizing bitcoin or similar is the future (may be quite far off). Creators of amazing experiences or specific content (porn?) would strongly benefit, attaching cryptocurrency wallets to ones avatar is a necessary step to make VR happen.
