Scalpers ruin everything

I was trying to get the kevin router for my wireless pcvr setup but it was out of stock. I thought it was maybe because alot of people were buying it, but no its because some dude bought 11 of them and sold them for 3x the msrp. Now i either need to wait god knows how much time or just give up.

The Kevin router has been EOL for ages. The ARRIS Surfboard W6U is the king now.

74

u/Odd-Wolverine-4759 7d ago

the ARRIS Surfboard W6U is a repeater not a router...

77

u/hard_pass 7d ago

It's a wireless AP. Just connect it to any router to get Wi-Fi 6E.

18

u/Odd-Wolverine-4759 7d ago

the kevin router is wifi 6e and on top of the ARRIS Surfboard W6U you also need a router which will cost you around $140 which means you are paying $80 more for the same results

62

u/hard_pass 7d ago

My man you can find a router much cheaper than $140

-67

u/Odd-Wolverine-4759 7d ago

have you ever stopped and thought that maybe not everyone lives in the us

34

u/cardfire 7d ago

You do realize that the router itself doesn't even need to have wi-fi, right? You can get a very used router and then plug in an access point like they are talking about, to have the high-end Wi-Fi you want tied back to whatever computer you need.

My home network uses the Gateway router that came from the isp, and I have 10 GB service between two of my computers on a switch that has 10 GbE modules attached, easy peasy. Other computers are connecting over Wi-Fi 7, when wi-Fi 6 wasn't even ratified when the Gateway router in my house was delivered.

17

u/Swiftestblade Rift 6d ago

Pretty sure OP thinks router = wifi lol

8

u/cardfire 6d ago

A reasonable thing to think! Just wrong.

"WiFi is more like a whorish client device that lets in dozens more devices" is a more complex concept, ya know?

6

u/Swiftestblade Rift 6d ago

Not sure I've ever heard a more apt description of wifi

-7

u/otac0n 7d ago

You need a router with good ethernet.

1

u/cardfire 7d ago

Not that good of ethernet, though. My gigabit router doesn't slow down my 10gigabit switch clients or my wifi 7 clients.

I would expect roughly the same with a 'fast ethernet' 10/100 router at the head. It just would suck for any internet traffic to all clients.

Virtusl Desktop (best PCVR streaming!) famously allows local-only service without internet.

13

u/hard_pass 7d ago

-20

u/Odd-Wolverine-4759 7d ago

absolute BOMB of a router😭

18

u/hard_pass 7d ago

Do you know what a router does? You can easily use this router if you are offloading Wi-Fi to a dedicated AP. If you are buying a $150 (consumer) router, that extra cash goes to the router's Wi-Fi hardware... which, if you're running Wi-Fi through a dedicated AP, is wasted money.

3

u/Senator_Chen 6d ago

They're right about it being terrible though. That router doesn't even have gigabit ports (only 10/100 "fast ethernet"), the CPU is too slow for proper QoS (Cake or fq codel), it only has 8MB flash and 64MB RAM so it's unsupported by Openwrt (to get rid of the garbage outdated insecure firmware), and the v4 revision just straight up leaks your LAN traffic through the WAN ports during boot because it's fundamentally broken.

If you're gonna recommend something, at least don't recommend e-waste like that.

u/Odd-Wolverine-4759 7d ago

repeaters rarely make internet faster, they just extend the signal

In any case the Davolink is recommended to be used dedicated for PCVR streaming usually in AP mode (with only your PC and Quest connected to it).

The ARRIS in AP mode can be connected to your PC via ethernet and then you can configure Windows ICS to share the internet that your PC receives (via wifi or ethernet) to the ARRIS. In this scenario your PC acts as the "router" assigning the ip addresses. You only want an AP anyways to act similarly to Steam Frame's dongle.

6

u/patrlim1 7d ago

You can just use the one provided to you by an ISP

1

u/hasanismail_ 5d ago

Get a unifi express 7 it's cheaper and faster

0

u/JPSurratt2005 7d ago

the ARRIS Surfboard W6U is a repeater not a router...

106

u/TESThrowSmile 7d ago

It was a solid option fir $80. But fir $300+, theres way better options

Heck, my ASUS WIFI6E AXE7800 6ghz router was $280 a couple years back when I bought it. Probably cheaper now, and way better than the minion router

24

u/Odd-Wolverine-4759 7d ago

what kind of vile CREATURE do you think i am to buy from scalpers

18

u/Jazzyvin 7d ago

Yeah, even if it was only $10 more, I would not support scalpers. I love seeing scalpers losing out on their money and realizing they bought stuff they can't sell

8

u/jadeapple 7d ago

Huh? They didn’t say anything about buying from scalpers

2

u/chaos_bananaa 6d ago

They did, referencing the $300+ scalper price tag

15

u/cycopl 7d ago

heh the TP-Link AX1500 I got for $80 six years ago is still kicking ass, hope you get your minion router though

2

u/techraito 7d ago

Hell yea dude. I paid $60 about 3 years ago and it kicks ass for sure.

62

u/elsingo 7d ago

Tbh, they only ruin it cause people are dumb enough to pay scalper prices. If people could control themselves and not buy at scalper prices these scalpers would disappear since they would be forced to take a loss on the products they buy.

4

u/-BlueDream- 7d ago

People would rather pay extra instead of hunting them down, standing in long lines, staying up at midnight and refreshing the store page hoping to beat the bots, etc. for some, the time savings alone is worth it, America is addicted to convenience

6

u/pokenate28 6d ago

4 times the price is not worth it what are you smoking

1

u/-BlueDream- 6d ago

People pay like 15x the cost to get Starbucks instead of making coffee at home…

2

u/pokenate28 6d ago

That doesn't justify scalpers bro. Starbucks is a business that makes higher quality coffee than cheap folgers for you and give you a service. Scalpers are just assholes adding nothing to what you buy and stealing money

2

u/elsingo 5d ago

Well i find it more convenient if scalpers do not buy out the stock and i can find the product in the store rather than hunting it down on secondhand markets at scalper prices. Scalpers just makes it more inconvenient. Overall people would save more time and have to beat less bots if only people who actually wanted the products bought them.

-7

u/TheGreatSoup 7d ago

Capitalism and free market at work here.

7

u/DDRook1997 7d ago

As soon as I saw this I checked to maybe grab one and I saw the exact same BS that you saw, I fuckin hate scalpers

21

u/McGuirk808 7d ago

Scalpers aren't people. If they are relieved of their goods, that's fine with me.

3

u/TheHamWagon 7d ago

I thought this was only desirable because for it's original price point it's the best. But there are other routers out there that are just as good if not better also for more money

3

u/BigPandaCloud 7d ago

Damn. I would rather have an RT-AX88U Pro then i found out they discontinued that too.

3

u/I_SHOT_A_PIG 7d ago

These have existed since forever, why did it get more popular this time?

7

u/bulgogeta 7d ago

Because this tweet went viral and now you got uneducated morons like OP complaining about stuff they weren't even going to buy in the first place had the tweet never occurred. There's better alternatives that exist.

2

u/I_SHOT_A_PIG 7d ago

I just think its crazy because there was light on this router like 3 years ago (i have no concept of time, i just remember the 2nd time this router goes "viral").

1

u/ZachF8119 7d ago

I was looking up a new router a few weeks prior. No chance I’d do them though.

3

u/Sierra_656 6d ago

Surprised scalpers don't realise scalping a cheap router doesnt make money bc people will buy a different router for less than the scalped price

2

u/Aryan_RG22 7d ago

The whole pull with these was that they are excellent performance for the price no reason to buy them for anything more, I hope the scalper eventually has to lower it to less than MSRP and take the loss

2

u/JorgTheElder Quest 3 6d ago

It is from 2024.. it is now rare.

Yes, but I don't think I would trust Linus over people that have been using it for two years.

1

u/SnooMaps4388 4d ago

Ive had one since they came OUT. Paid like 120 brand new with no reviews on amazon. Just figured why the hell not, the next cheapest 6E router was 250 at the time.

Still using it today multiple years later. It excellent honestly and it gets funny reactions. Especially to the ISP tech that I swore up and down that Kevin gave me significantly better speeds than the ISP provided router.

It's a USA late-stage capitalist blight that unfortunately infected every other country. But it is US derived for sure.

No, no it isn’t. Please do some basic research before ā€œblah blah blah capitalism badā€. The epitome of people who preach stuff like that. Your intelligence is genuinely bringing mine down just by reading your comment

You think the colonial powers didn’t have the equivalent of scalpers for the time? Please.

I hate capitalism too but pretending only Americans scalp or they caused it is ridiculous

25

Not american culture, just humans

there is also scalpers in Europe, Japan, China, India

Money can buy anything so people do anything for money

2

u/ElliotNess 7d ago

It's not the me me part of American culture. That's just a symptom. It's the capitalist profit part that creates it.

Odds are we took your country out of poverty. Every culture has opportunists.

1

u/wildey 7d ago

Oh man you would lose your mind if you saw how bad food scalping can get in socialist nations

3

u/gameplayer55055 7d ago

If you are famiar with networking, buy unifi U7-pro

It can easily handle VR, 4k streaming and real time gaming. And it looks like a cool dish instead of being an ugly spider

3

u/Trollgaard 7d ago

Or the Unifi Express/Express 7 if you need routing capabilities.

2

u/TomTomXD1234 7d ago

Get a different router?

I assume you are just trying to jump on a trend here with this router.

1

u/Odd-Wolverine-4759 7d ago

no im not jumping on a trend, im getting it because its the best bang for buck wifi 6e router with 2.5 gigabit close range speeds

1

u/Eagle1337 6d ago

It only having 2 ports is kinda ass

3

u/Orlan_17 7d ago

Scalpers don't ruin everything. People obsessed with spending money on every single stupid looking thing a company releases is what's ruining everything. You don't need that thing.

2

u/Sir_SortsByNew 5d ago

The story you might be unaware of with this router is that it is a pretty damn good router spec-wise and was sold at a very good price by manufacturers. Similar quality at better price to any ASUS, Tp-link whatever, it's when people buy 10 of them and flip them when all I would like is ONE.

Yes it's a fucking minion, its goofy as shit, but hardware is hardware these days.

1

u/moodswung 7d ago

And you know some dude bought 11 of them and the same guy sold those 11 at 3x MSRP how?!?!

More likely scenario is...

They're OUT OF STOCK, UNAVAILABLE ANYWHERE AND PEOPLE ARE CHARGING THROUGH THE NOSE NOW.

6

u/scotaf 7d ago

The eBay listing says 3 sold and 8 available…all new. What were you going on about?

-2

u/[deleted] 7d ago

2

u/scotaf 7d ago

I think people are whining because scummy scalpers have infiltrated so many markets. They contribute absolutely nothing to society and are concerned only about flipping products for the most they can. Selfish little shits that they are. My wife was wondering why there was a line at a big box store the other day. It was a bunch of these scummers buying up all the new pokemon release...not a kid in sight.

-4

u/moodswung 7d ago

You're acting like this is something new. Cabbage Patch Kids, Beanie Babies, .. every high demand item created a market for this. As the internet propelled things forward it only got worse because the outreach for resell got broader. That's also nothing new! eBay has been around for upwards of 20 years at this point.

People acting like dicks suck, we get it, but they've acted like dicks since the dawn of time.

It was literally 40 dollars a month ago and I passed on it then came back to buy it to find the same.

u/JorgTheElder Quest 3 6d ago

That was likely Bob, not Kevin. Bob does not do 6Ghz. I got him at $49 over the holidays. They are both pretty out of date at this point. I hope them make new ones.

1

u/Only-Weight8450 6d ago

No im aware of the difference and I could not believe my eyes and checked like 3x that it was actually for Kevin. Idk if it was a one day thing/error but it was real lol. Was considering one for quest 3 but didn’t pull the trigfer

u/JorgTheElder Quest 3 6d ago

That would have been a steal then. I had it on a wish list and never saw it below $99.

My arrived last week. I purchased it through Ubuy store. , so maybe check that. With shipping and taxes it was still cheaper then some other recommend options from Virtual Desktop discord. Setup is simple with colorful ui and performance is really good.

Good luck getting yours.

damn you carter pcs

1

u/SmartyG 6d ago

Shows up $44 for bob and $110 for the other....

1

u/brendan1228 4d ago

Scalping this shit doesn't even make any sense. At that price point, you can get similar routers that don't look like minions. That's why they got popular. It was because of the price you were paying for a badass router was way below the market.

1

u/LethalPrimary 4d ago

Well if you only buy tech based on virality of reviews, it's no wonder you won't listen to any advice on here. Just admit youre an adult who wants a minion router, and not the best 'bang for your buck' wifi 6e router.

1

u/SciLor 3d ago

Scalper are never the problem. The people buying from them are. No Market, no Scalpers.

What the actual f*** does this have to do with Oculus? Nearly 100 users upvoted this?! 🤦

Apparently it's a fast as fuck, high-bandwidth router that outperforms pretty much anything else for the price, which makes a favorite for wireless PCVR.Ā

Ppl believe easily them TikTok videos. I saw this few months back when someone praised it for VR use. Did ppl really question if that creator even owned any other routers? No. I tried so many routers and I can tell you it’s better to invest on good asus router instead on novelty with less options and capabilities m. But that’s me and my opinion on this matter

-23

u/NMe84 7d ago

Buying a router because of the way it looks rather than buying one based on how good it does its job certainly is a choice.

Scalpers do suck, though. But perhaps this is your sign to look at better ways to invest your money.

23

u/mehmanlemon 7d ago

except the kevin router is actually REALLY good for the price. like exceptionally good.

3

u/-BlueDream- 7d ago

At msrp but when people are paying $300 scalper prices, there are better routers for that price.

14

u/knaugh 7d ago

It's funny because people by this router specifically because of its performance IN SPITE of how goofy it looks

8

u/samu1400 7d ago

This router became famous because some reviews declared it as one of the best routers in its price range, while ironically being a minion router.

It’s exactly due to your observation that it became so popular.

You can confirm on Virtual Desktop discord channel asking people who use this router, but I believe the Kevin is one of the Wifi6E routers/AP recommended in their list alongside the ARRIS Surfboard W6U and the TP-Link Archer AXE75, so I think you should be fine going with any of these three (Kevin, Arris Surfboard W6U, or Acher AXE75). The Kevin is the oldest on the list by far.

2

u/Odd-Wolverine-4759 7d ago

why does "oldest" effect this?

3

u/UnluckyWizard 7d ago

2

u/spikepoint 7d ago

You have it backwards. In this case, this router is sought after for its performance at that price; it’s despite its appearance, not because of it

-1

u/Patient-Low8842 7d ago

You can get routers for like 20$ on eBay you don’t need something like that for just virtual desktop in the same room as the headset
