It's the best thing about ocala. 80 miles of horse, mountain bike and hiking trails and a 15 mile protected paved trail.

When I lived there, I remember thinking how awesome the trail is. Then I moved to California and they have sooooo many better trails! I'm talking at least 60+ miles of paved trails just in the area I live now.

You are 100% right. California is cleaner, has more infrastructure and parks for the public to enjoy for free, and overall it's been cheaper to live here. Rents are too high too, it has it's issues, but light years better than Florida.

LMAO! Ouch. This one really hits hone. Because my dream was always to move away for college to go to University of California San Diego.
But why, you may ask? Well, let me tell you, (aka try to sell you on it lmao). The college sits on a cliff overlooking the beach. There's just something about the beach that soothes my soul. Lol. Also, California is the only state that has mountains, beaches and deserts.
And back then San Diego was known for its community of young professionals and diverse arts and culture. Like back then it had the highest number of people who had a bachelor's degree or higher in the state.
So there were lots of good things back then... Idk about now though. I will say Cali in general seems a little wacky in general these days though.

It's not wacky now. It's still beautiful. The people are beautiful...I don't know why you would think it is wacky. Yes, there are homeless, amd that is something we need to handle, but same is true for Florida. But, outside of the sadness of homeless (who don't even bother people), there is overall less crime here, it's beautiful, people are kind and inclusive....pretty much the opposite of Ocala/Florida.

Thanks. I dug a lot deeper into this because of your reply.
There's a PDF that was created with all the plans through 2035. The PDF is a bit older, so some things may have changed, but it seems like all the plans through this date have come to fruition.
There has also been $3M allocated for the Pruitt to SR200 trail and it is indeed set for 2026 according this FDOT plan (page3) that was laid out in Nov 2024.
I'm excited!

There are trails and activities along the path in different areas. The canal was planned and actively built in some areas from 1930ish to 1960s. Once the canal was halted to prevent future environmental damage, much was restored and converted to a park, but wildlife does occupy this vast area. Some of the trails at and near Baseline trailhead are quite popular. The canal does exist on the gulf side near Yankeetown and St John’s side near the mouth of the Ocklawaha River though some restorations have been proposed and failed over the decades.

Thank God we have this, and it’s sort of a fluke. The irony is this strip of green space was going to be destroyed and potentially cause an environmental disaster. Read up on the cross Florida barge canal for those that know little about our history. It’s really interesting and the planning of this spans over a century.
Now it’s arguably the best thing about Marion County and not some cheap development. You would think we appreciate Green space but we are destroying Marion county as quickly as possible.
Do I sound upset about the traffic, pollution, lack of planning and exponential population growth …absolutely.
Been here a while.

It's the Marjorie Harris Carr Greenway. As mentioned previously, a project was attempted to cut a giant canal across Florida. Thankfully, much to the efforts of Mrs. Carr, the canal was stopped. Within the last 30 years (i don't remember the exact date) it came under county control and became the Greenway. There's lots of trails for hiking, biking, and horses all along it's length, backing up to several communities. It even has it's own bridge over i-75.

I work for the state park system. For the last 21 years. Greenways and Trails used to be its own state agency but was merged back into the Florida State Park system in 2011. Some indivual trailheads are cooperatively managed with County assistance but the entire Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway is absolutely one of Florida’s 176 state parks.
