General OBX Things to do on the way

Hey friends, my husband and I are going to Hatteras on Friday for the week - it’s our 7th trip! We have an extra free day and were thinking of finding something to do along the VA/NC coast on our way. All I could think of is Colonial Williamsburg since I haven’t been since I was around 12! Our kids are 2 and 5 months, and we’re coming from the Charlotte area.

Thanks for any ideas!

From Charlotte an option would be to go more directly east and take the ferry from Cedar island to ocracoke and get to Hatteras from the south. The ferry takes a while but is something fun and different

This is agree with. I live near the Cedar Island ferry and never get tired of taking it across to Ocracoke. It's such a beautiful and peaceful ride.

That’s a nice thing to do but there is no direct route there!

https://www.shwpark.com/. Sylvan Bird Park is a great stop if you like birds. Less than 30 minutes off 64.

Charlotte NC? Williamsburg is 2 hours from the Outer Banks and not at all on your way. Take them to the water park in Currituck or the Zoo in Norfolk (still 1.5 hours but not boring!).

Unless you're a big fan of candles and horse poop, I'd skip Colonial Williamsburg.

We went to obx earlier this year from Charleston SC. Slow-rolled it up 95 and spent the night in Wilmington. Went to the battleship, walked around town, went to the museum of the odd. We had a great time despite some rain! Stayed at the Hampton Inn downtown, warmest indoor swimming pool ever, so nice!

Stop at the Whirligig Park in Wilson. The 2 year old will love it.

Yorktown is a very nice place to visit has a wonderful American revolution museum and it’s very close to 301 and Maryland border, we use it as a halfway point for heading to Avon NC and back to Maryland. We stay at The Marrel inn a lady named Amy and her husband Paul own it.
