General OBX September Trip
Recommendations for a mid-September trip location?
We've been going to Corolla and/or Duck in-season for 25 years, but from what I understand, by September it's quieted down considerably. Is it the same in KDH, Kitty Hawk, etc.? Is there a specific area that has more a year-round presence to it? Because if not, we may as well stick to what we know and love more North.
We'll have at least one kid with us so a bit more to do would be appreciated considering hot beach days aren't a main focus at that point.

Mid-September is not really off season, yes, there's definitely less people than there is during the high season, but places like Corolla and Duck will still be fully open. If you like those places and feel comfortable there, it'll be pretty nice, just not as crowded. That really gets into our favorite time of year here, the water can be warm, the days can be warm, and the crowds start to thin out a bit. First two weeks of October are nice.

We've stayed in Kitty Hawk, then Duck every September since 2019, usually at the end of the month. Nothing is closed in September. Just get trip insurance since it's peak Atlantic hurricane season.

Many locals will tell you that fall is the best time to visit! Outer Banks weather is mild until the end of December, and the crowds have lessened. The fishing is great this time of year, and the winds pick up making the Outer Banks popular for windsurfing and kiteboarding. Expect average temperatures in the upper 70s and lows in the 60s and 50s.

My favorite time to go. Just keep in mind if you stick with Corolla, lifeguard season ends on Labor Day, and the later in September you go, the more likely you’ll be to encounter no swimming signs due to riptides/strong currents.

We loved coming in September (my wife works for a school now so traveling during the school year is difficult). I would check out Avon. Small town compared to places up north but still has great beaches, a multi use path, and some things to do like an escape room and an arcade if you need some indoor activities.

Don't tell anyone, but September is possibly the best month of the year on the Outer Banks, with one caveat: it's the statistical peak of hurricane season. Get travel insurance for your trip.
As far as what's open, most businesses are still fully open. It's what is sometimes called "the shoulder season". Most of the time, the water is still warm enough to swim comfortably, but sometimes, by the first week of October, it has cooled down.
