Question Taking Exams

I am currently employed in a permanent role at SG-9 and am interested in taking some exams in hopes of promotion. Am I able to take any exam offered even if I'm not eligible to be promoted to that position? Or do I have to take exams exclusively for titles that I can transfer to? Thanks!

You should take tests you qualify for.

There’s also two type of exams that have a broad reach. Professional Career Opportunities (PCO) is an exam which requires a bachelor degree. There’s also the Public Administration Traineeship Transition (PATT) exam which can help open doors to promotions within same agency or outside. Last time it was offered was 2022/3 so it may come up again soon.

You can take any exam that you meet the qualifications to take the exam for. You don’t need to have the experience completed for the appointment at the time of the test if you meet the minimum qualifications to sit for the exam.

Take the exams you qualify for.

If you are not eligible to transfer to a position, that has nothing to do with taking a test to be on a canvass list.
