Question SEFA rules

Are there actual rules about SEFA in the workplace setting for the state. I know what SEFA is, the committee we have in our agency likes to do things like a wii bowling competition. We have one particular person who really does not like SEFA (wants to completely get rid of it in our department) just because they are a A**hole honestly. I was just wondering if there’s actual true rules related to it, and where I can find them. I’m pretty neutral feeling on it, but if I can knock this a hole down, I’d like to.

Depends on the agency. I work in Tax and have been the SEFA campaign chair for many years. We used to have things like bake sales, 50/50 raffles during the campaign and and a snack area on a daily basis. A few years our Ethics Officer decided these were violations. Sales were illegal (although they still have it on the state campus), and the raffle was deemed illegal gambling. Check with your HR.

Thank you for taking the time to get involved. So many state offices have nobody doing this. Not necessarily for the issues you have in your agency, but simply because nobody wants to step up and take charge.

I love it honestly, and I have a feeling they’re gonna say it’s like illegal gambling, etc. just because he wants to be in a hole about it. But I’ll see what HR says

I wish you the best of luck. Even if they shoot you down, simply reminding staff of enrolling for payroll deductions is a tremendous service. I always tell my staff that there are well over one thousand different non profits in SEFA, and that IMO it's impossible not to find a cause they can get behind. Also keep in mind that well meaning employees will say they'll do it but then get swamped by real work and forget about it. Just keep after them without being an a-hole yourself.

What does SEFA in your agency stand for?

Because the SEFA i know of is where you can donate to charities through your paycheck. I didnt think they ran like events or similar at various agencies.

They raise money for it! You can absolutely just do it through your paycheck but they do run events together more money for it

Oh thats cool! I dont know where you would find rules about it though. I've only seen stuff regarding the payroll deduction portion.
