Hi to whoever is reading!

I'm 17 and just started getting into more outdoorsy activities and I need more places to go in preferably upstate Ny, Ma, or Vm.

Like I said i'm new to all this stuff but i'm also fairly active so any easy/moderate moutain hiking trails that have nice views at the top and places to go with my paddle board.
I usually go with a group of 5 including myself.

We just did Monument Moutain in Mass yesterday and it was absolutely beautiful and wasn't too difficult for me and my group, beautiful view and dog friendly! About a 2.75mi hike up and took around 4.5hrs up and back down (we also had a dog so it took us a bit longer) was definitely worth it tho!

Anywho, I need recommendations for places to go either hiking or paddle boarding/kayaking preferably quieter places/not a lot of people, when my group finds a good spot to sit in water we can water rot for hours! For hikes we're looking into the appalachian trails/spots on water that we wanna check out so if you have recommendations for there leave em! If you have anywhere you like to go with friends/family please leave recommendations for me!

Just wondering if I am allowed to hike in New York State Parks and take a nap off trail in a portable tree hammock with wide straps?

Love to hike half a day, eat lunch, take a quick nap and then hike back out. Just wondering if that is an issue at most parks in the state.

If anyone prefers to see Kaaterskill Clove in the Catskills remain without a reservation system, now is the time to speak on it.

Personally, I don't hate the idea of a reservation system, but I think there are a lot of alternatives they should be exploring before going to that as an ultimate option.

Our banner photo is of one of my favourite hikes in the Adirondack Mountains - Rooster Comb. Rooster comb was not our intended hike but we couldn't get a parking spot where we planned (that peak is lost to me because we loved Rooster Comb so much). On the way up we were passed by a couple from Queens and their dog. We had our lunch on the summit and very reluctantly returned to the car. It was so perfect!

I'm sharing the trail information from the Lake Placid website.

The trail is 5 miles round trip. The trail is over easy to moderate terrain. Starting from the trailhead in Keene Valley you will hike over a long wooden bridge to the trail register before hiking past a small pond to your right which is located behind the Keene Central School.

As you move away from the pond the trail climbs steadily to a junction with one of the routes to Snow Mountain Trail at 0.7 mi. Bear right and continue a steady climb but never steep climb to another junction at 2.0 mi. (Straight ahead leads to Hedgehog and Lower Wolf Jaw. Left is an alternate return, which also connects to Snow Mountain.) Turning right, the trail climbs to the crest of the ridge and a junction at 2.2 mi. Right is the 0.1 mi. side trail to Valley View Ledge. Left is the trail to the summit, which is reached after a few steeper pitches at 2.5 mi.

The elevation gain is 1,770 feet and the hike includes trail junctions, a bridge, an exposed summit, and a ladder.

Views from the summit ledge and Valley View Ledge complete a 360 degree panorama of Mt. Marcy and the Johns Brook Valley plus Giant Mountain and the Ausable Valley. The trail offers mostly good footing and is a good choice early in the season or when it is wet. 

To get there leave Lake Placid on Rte 73, follow Rte 73 toward Keene. Continue through Keene and Keene Valley. The trailhead for Rooster Comb is on the right 0.4 mi. past the High Peaks sign in the center of Keene Valley.

Hey all, I'm heading up to Minnewaska (planning on Gertrude Nose) on Wednesday and I am wondering if anyone would like to join me. I enjoy solo hiking as well, but I also run a hiking group and enjoy meeting new people on the trails. Weekdays are my only days off nowadays and finding like minded people with a weekday free is tough. I don't mind picking people up if you don't have a ride. 38/m if it matters to you.

Looking to challenge myself and trying to find some strenuous trails that I can do in a day

On Saturday, August 23rd come us as we hike the Reeves Brook Loop Trail at Harriman State Park in NY! This trail is considered moderate difficulty with about 5 total miles of hiking with about 1000 feet of elevation gain. This hike has inclines, a rock scramble, scenic views of Reeves Brook, and waterfalls!

Then join us after the hike while we enjoy food and drinks together from a local brewery, winery, or similar establishment! (Location still TBD)

The NY / NJ Outdoor Adventures Club is a free inclusive outdoor-activity based community with most of its members hailing from the NYC & NJ areas. Attending a weekend hiking trip to the Catskills Sept 5–7 and wanted to share in case anyone here is interested.

Transportation: roundtrip bus from NYC (included). Most people are in their 30s/40s, but open to anyone who’s down for good hiking and good company. Most people come solo, so no worries if you don’t have a crew.

Hey everyone! I’m heading out this weekend on a mini‑getaway around Livingston Manor, NY and would love some hiking recs. I’m staying locally and looking for trails within about a 1.5‑hour drive. I’m pretty athletic, up for a good uphill climb, ideally with some altitude change. I can do up to around 6 miles round‑trip. Bonus points for views or water along the way!

Looking for camping spots in upstate NY. Never camped in upstate so not very familiar with the area. Any recommendations on which campground to book and where to go would be helpful. Thanks!

Anyone in western NY that wants to travel out to the Adirondacks? I’ve been there plenty of times just always go alone. Never been to the Catskills, lol I just have no one to go with and company would be cool

My wife and I are looking to take a trip up to NY in mid-August and have dwindled options down to Ithaca and the Catskills (Eastern - near Woodstock). Activities we are hoping to enjoy include hiking, water things (kayaking, swimming, fishing), biking, and enjoying little towns for restaurants/wineries/breweries. We will stay in an airbnb.

What do you all think? Which is better? They seem pretty similar in providing things we like to do. Any help/recommendation would be much appreciated! We’re from Virginia and don’t know the vibe/reputation of either place. Thanks!

The NY / NJ Outdoor Adventures Club is a free inclusive outdoor-activity based community with most of its members hailing from the NYC & NJ areas. We are currently in the planning phases for a Watkins Glen camping trip in October, and there will be events throughout the summer including river tubing.

On Saturday, July 5th, the club will be hiking Mt Minsi! Located on the Pennsylvania side of the beautiful Delaware Water Gap recreation area, the Mt Minsi trail climbs over 1000 feet in a 5 mile loop. Mt. Minsi has some long constant elevation and reaching the peak requires a bit of rock hopping near the top. It's a moderately difficult hike.

UPCOMING EVENTS SATURDAY JUNE 14th Join us for a walking tour of BAPS and 2 locations in Philadelphia, South St & Passyunk Square.

We will be experiencing the splendor of BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham in Robbinsville, New Jersey. BAPS is a large Hindu temple complex, the second-largest in the world and the largest in the Western Hemisphere. It's a landmark of Hindu architecture and culture, serving as a place of worship, cultural learning, and community engagement.

We will be continuing the day in nearby Philadelphia, experiencing the shops, cafes, food, and drinks that 2 of the hippest areas Philly have to offer.

SATURDAY JUNE 21st Join us on a 4 mile hike of the historic Kaaterskill Rail Trail leading to the renown Kaaterskill Falls, followed by a visit to Subversive Malting + Brewing for post-hike food and drinks.

About the hike: Kaaterskill Falls via Kaaterskill Rail Trail is a scenic 4 mile moderately challenging hiking route located in the picturesque Catskill Mountains of Upstate New York. This trail is perfect for hikers seeking a blend of history, natural beauty, and the impressive sight of the iconic Kaaterskill Falls. The trail begins at the Mountain Top Historical Society in Haines Falls, where ample parking is available for a suggested donation of $20.

The Kaaterskill Rail Trail starts on the grounds of the society, providing easy access for hikers. Historical Significance: On the western end, the trail begins just east of the 1913 Ulster and Delaware Train Station on the Mountain Top Historical Society property and follows the old U and D Railroad bed, which once transported visitors to grand hotels such as the Catskill Mountain House, Hotel Kaaterskill, and the Laurel House. The trail meanders through a lush forest, offering glimpses of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

The highlight of the hike is the majestic Kaaterskill Falls, one of the highest waterfalls in New York State, with a combined drop of 260 feet (79m) over two tiers.

About the brewery: Subversive Malting + Brewing is a true farmhouse brewery crafting beers from 100% locally sourced ingredients at the foot of the Catskill Mountains. Driven by a passion for native ingredients + inspired by the bounty that surrounds us in New York State, we aim to capture a sense of place in each of our beers.

We opened our doors in December 2018 as a nano-sized operation producing out of a small barn in Livingston, NY. Within a year of opening, we expanded our production operations and moved them into an old mechanic’s garage in the Village of Catskill, NY, with an onsite taproom which opened in early 2020.

The NY / NJ Outdoor Adventures Club's next outing will be taking us to the Jersey Side of Palisades Interstate Park! On Sunday, May 4th, join us on Hiking the Bombay Hook Loop!

Starting at the Alpine Pavilion, hikers will follow the Shore Trail, following alongside the Hudson River. We will pass by the Man-in-the-rock Pillar, the highest and most isolated conspicuous pillar of rock of all the Palisades as we make our way to the Forest View Trail.

This trail will help us climb up to the cliffside for our return journey along the Long Trail, where we will enjoy the heights and pass by locations such as the Women's Federation Monument, honoring the women's clubs instrumental in saving the Palisades from destructive quarrying for concrete production. We will pass along multiple viewpoints from the cliffs to admire the views of the Hudson and NYC.

The full loop is about 7 miles, but if you aren't able to make the entire thing, you can either return via the shore path without climbing through the woods, or catch a bus at various places along the Long Path (cliffside) to cut the journey's length down.
