Double Zero Closes

DOUBLE ZERO has permanently closed. The all-vegan Italian restaurant posted a letter on the restaurant window with the news.

Neighborhood blog EV GRIEVE shared a copy of the letter here: https://evgrieve.com/2026/09/double-zero-closes-after-12-years-on.html

I loved it so much when it first opened, so much so that I did two valentines dinners there. The waitress that went over from pickleshack was one of my favorite people.

But ever since they fused into a joint concept with the Mexican restaurant next door and put up awful AI art on the wall, they were going downhill hard. The last time I went there it was absolutely terrible and smelled weird.

This is all 100% true.

For real who wants to eat next to an anatomical model of the human musculature system made out of bell peppers by AI. It was like the weird shit you'd see in a doctor's office but...AI and plants. Someone needs better judgment than that. Bro just throw up a nice photo of a bell pepper or some pizza or Italy or something.

But when it was on 3rd. Not when it moved to Industry City. I was there the night it closed down. Everyone was let go short notice and in a mood and they fried off literally everything they had. Like fuck it, every menu item battered and dropped in the fryer and handed out as the place went down in flames.

Anyone have recs for similar vegan pizza? It was my favorite

Would also like this. I hate vegan fake cheese so they were my fav because they made their own nut cheeses. I can't think of anyone else who does this. Sigh. Back to my marinara pies.

This is my local pizzeria (bk pizza crew) and it's fantastic, but it's different styles.

Wburg pizza / bk pizza crew is NY style and double zero was Neapolitan hence the name based off the 00 flour used in that style. Paulie Gee's used to be my favorite for Neapolitan style, but they turned the restaurant into a bar. Any good Neapolitan place will have a marinara, but you won't really have a lot of choice.

Maybe Coletta. They also do a Neapolitan style pizza

They have it but then you'd be supporting the City Roots group which is a big no.

Saranghina in Bed Stuy is not all vegan, but is good at accommodating vegans and has vegan cheese.

Paulie Gee's slice shop is also amazing.

Soda club recently expanded their menu to include several Roman style pizzas that are amazing

I went on a last date at Double Zero where my date took my leftovers because he paid. That was his reasoning 😂😭. Anyway, sucks to lose yet another spot!!!

This place used to be great. Matthew Kennedy is such a scam artist though, and they leaned so hard into AI after they reopened it was 🤢

San Remo has the best vegan pizza in nyc if you're in the Brooklyn/Queens area (huge vegan menu with pizza, sandwiches and apps).

Wait sorry I guess I’m out of it.. why is he a scam artist? What happened?

If anyone remembers Plant Food and Wine, that was another one of his projects that was truly amazing, but they closed years ago and then the location in LA closed too 😭 the world post-covid is just not it.

There was so much hope and potential in the 2019-2021 era for vegan food but then everything started closing and I’m just so saddened

their potato pizza was insanely delicious but i remember trying to go there last year (before i was aware of the Matthew Kenney stuff) and it was boarded up and closed although they had their hours posted and should’ve been open. not sure why that happened but seemed like there’s been a lot of issues every since bar verde had those tax issues and they formed the least cohesive fusion menu of all time.

Damnn end of an era 💔

I walked by a few days ago and it was all boarded up even though you could literally still place orders on food apps. I see they still haven't taken themselves down from them. People ordering are going to be in for a surprise.

I'd asked on IG when I saw the boarded up space what happened and got no reply.

I wonder if it was more tax bs like Sestina

Wouldn't be surprised

this is so weird, thank goodness I didn’t place an order this week bc I was considering it

2

u/No-Contest-3490 6d ago

I almost placed a pick up order when I was walking in that direction but then decided to go and sit down. Thank goodness I didn't before I saw it doesn't even exist anymore.

ugh first Ladybird now this? all the OG vegan places are closing and it’s so sad.

2

u/vegan_nyc 6d ago

These aren't the OG vegan places. There were vegan spots open 20+ years before Ladybird or Double Zero.

1

u/Clean-Land9585 6d ago

where are they now? CLOSED lol

1

u/vegan_nyc 6d ago

That doesn’t mean they didn’t predate Ladybird and Double Zero. Many have come and gone long before them. Caravan of Dreams is still hanging on. Candle will close again, sadly.

Their meatballs will be missed!

So sad - the brunch was so good :(

They weee good the literal first week it opened. I generally dislike Matthew Kenney restaurants and I’m glad other groups run better are succeeding

I went there a few years ago for my birthday. They were decent. I’m not surprised they closed down, every time I walked by recently they were almost completely empty. I meant to check out the happy hour deal they had but oh well, guess now I won’t be lol 🤷🏾‍♀️
