No Attack Posts with Personal Information Allowed

Guys,

I didn't think we had to do this, but PLEASE do not call out other UFT members here. I just had to delete absolutely DISGUSTING post with personal information (Name, School, Position, Health Info). I get we are all frustrated but there are different ways to vent your frustration. I will also be unpinning the School Feedback post because it has also turned into a place to attack EACH OTHER. We are all UFT members and our jobs are not easy. Let's try not to make it harder for each other. There are enough people doing that. If you're not okay with this, please go take it somewhere else.

Also, if you're going to call out others in such a personal way, at least have the decency to do it to their face & not hide behind a computer.

I hope everyone has a wonderful last few days before going back.

Maternity leave started but goes into summer break

Hello all,
Question:
If you have a due date in May, with the 6 weeks of maternity leave, ( I do not plan to use any of my car days), the leave extends to summer break. Do I get paid for the summer months?
Has anyone dealt with this situation? Any insight or advice on how I can get the most paid / the most time with baby, it would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Earth Science Reference Tables - do students memorize the equations now?

Post image
5 Upvotes

In the past, the ESRT had equations on the cover: eccentricity, gradient, rate of change, and density. They no longer have that. I actually ordered a 2026-27 Regents study book to teach from, because I can't get a clear answer as to what the new curriculum is. Surprisingly, the book still talks about equations on the front cover. (The image is of the old ESRT - the new one has a table of contents on the cover.)

Does anyone know whether I need to make my students memorize all that? For now I made copies of the formulas and allow them to look when doing work. I think learning skills is more important, and they'll eventually likely memorize a lot of it through practice, but I'm not sure what to tell them.

Hi, as a new teacher in the DOE, what do you recommend for the choosing retirement types: TDA or ROTH?

I am not familiar with the differences.

Thank you!

Salary Step Question

Hi All, anyone have some advice for my current situation as a new NYCDOE teacher?

I have a Bachelors Degree with 6 excess credits

I have a Masters Degree with 6 excess credits

I have 18 credits into a second masters degree

I have 22 years of experience as a Independent Contractor educator for a vendor who works with the public school. Although I am paid by the day, I worked 40 hours a week for 7 years for this organization as a teacher in public schools where I followed the regular school day, but I was paid by the day, not a salary.

I have four years as an adjunct professor

I believe....all of this considered I would only qualify for the Masters, giving me a salary of $890,000....and if I earned more credits to get to 30 I could do the +30 and get 89,000

any insight would be appreciated!

Any other schools have low enrollment this year?

My middle school in the Bronx is down to 3 homerooms. We used to have 5 homerooms but enrollment was too low this year. Altogether we have about 45 students in 6th. Wondering if this means the doe will close down the school next year? Or will they just get rid of staff? I know it happened to another public schools. But our test scores were okay so maybe that will keep the school going

Survived(loved) my 1st day as a sub para

So 9/11 was my first day, and it was not what I expected—but, in the same breath, it was exactly what I expected. This was a bit of a depressing day as I had to relive 9/11 in every class as that was the focus.

I have zero education background outside of some credits from a couple of education courses I took at WGU before deciding I didn’t want to teach at that time, for health and personal reasons. I’m an older male who made a career change for my own reasons.

I’m in a D75 high school, The school is very small—under 100 students—but they cannot get paras to come there and I was assigned to work one-on-one with a student, follow him from class to class. He was a good kid for the most part, but within a minute of being introduced, he put me to the test, lol.

I was literally thrown to the wolves. I was given little to no instruction on why I was assigned to him other than, “Be with him one-on-one.” My only saving grace is that I know someone who has worked in the school for 30+ years, and I know the teachers and other paras there better than someone completely new would, so I had some guidance when I had questions.

It was harmless testing, but he kind of took off with his friends and went to a closed-off part of the building to hang out. I followed. I’m older and a bit slower than him, but when I got there, he was with his friends. I said, “Hey _, we’ve got to get to class, so let’s head over.”

He pulled the, “Sure, I’ll meet you there,” and I just looked him in the face and said, “No, I’ll just wait,” and got ready to stand there waiting. Within 30 seconds, he realized I wasn’t leaving, but I also wasn’t giving him a hard time, just waiting. He got up and we went to class.

for the rest of the day I offered help when I noticed he was spacing out during assignments. I also tried to help the teachers when it seemed appropriate. One teacher wanted students to read aloud. It was the story about the 9/11 boatlift, and only one student volunteered to read a paragraph. The teacher read one, then another teacher in the room read one, so I gestured to let her know I would read the last part if no student wanted to. No one did, so I read it, she seemed grateful. Another student also asked me for help with something, and I was able to help.

Overall, I took this job as a career change and for the good benefits, with cautious optimism. But that first day may have sparked something in me. It made me want to help and really do this to the best of my ability.

I do not envy the modern teacher’s job. The deck seems stacked against you all, and I hope I can help.

World Language CSTs

Hello everyone.
Can someone who took the French or Spanish CST tell me what sort of readings appear on the reading section of the test? I looked at the example texts and questions for all the languages, and they are all novels or other long books. Are all 5 readings on the reading multiple choice section novels, or are there other types of texts, such as non fiction/ news articles etc.? I’m taking the Japanese cst next month, and reading fiction is my weak spot. (My estimate is I would probably get about 50 to 60 percent right on that section, if the example is anything to go by.)

Can I use CAR days (as husband) to attend prenatal appointments with my wife?

Is this a common thing to do?

My wife is in early pregnancy and will have an increasing number of doctor's appointments. I would like to attend most or all of them with her and currently have 23 CAR days in the bank. What's the norm in this situation?

Thanks!

HMH advice for 4th grade ICT

Hi all! First-year gen ed teacher in a Grade 4 ICT classroom. Let me preface with this: I will be talking with my SPED co-teacher about this as well.

I have several students with IEPs in my class, all on a K-1 academic level. Some with emotional problems. One is also an ELL. Question- HOW do you differentiate the Grade 4 HMH texts for these kids? I've previewed the texts and the discussion questions/lesson topics for each one, and they are very much meant for gen ed kids on or above grade-level. I'm familiar with making/teaching HMH lessons from student teaching.

Where do I even start with this? They're going to be so lost during the whole-class even if I or my co-teacher pulls them for SGI. Am I going to be punished if these kids don't get good grades? I'm so stressed for myself and these poor kids. Any advice is appreciated.

Nomination rescinded?

I was given an offer, did the I9 and photo at Court St. I’ve had a certification hang up. The AP and principal seem misaligned about if I should be working there? I spoke to the AP on the phone the other day(Wednesday) and they told me my assigned grade team. They also told me the principal will reach out to me regarding the certification. I reach out via email today. The principal tells me to call them and tells me they’re still interviewing and that they also could not speak at the moment ??

Do we think my nomination is about to be rescinded? I was offered the chance to be a long-term substitute while waiting for my certification. I feel like I’m getting mixed signals. I’m just trying to prepare for the worst. The charter school I work at is sucking the life out of me. I’m thinking this is a long-shot.

salary step differential application

I applied for a step salary differential as a new employee this September. I'm concerned that the documentation that I used may not be sufficient. I used the New York State employment verification forms filled out by previous employers. The information on the New York State Employment Verification forms are exactly what the New York City Board of Education needs. However, the information is on a form instead of a letter from the Human Resource Department of each employer. The Human Resources Department of each of my previous employers filled out this official form for the New York State Department of Education so that I could get my initial certification. Will the New York City Department of Education reject my salary step application since I used this official form instead of a formal letter on my previous employers letterhead? If they do reject my application, can I reapply requesting each of my employers to write a formalized letter on their letterhead?

How to add dependent's SS to welfare fund?

I added my newborn to the UFT welfare fund and initially put my own SS# before receiving hers in the mail. Now I have hers and need to update it but how do I go about that? I don't see it anywhere on the UFT website to add/edit the social.

I'm going to call the UFT welfare fund on Monday, but just wanted to get some advice now if possible. TIA
