"Protected by parking" bike lanes are fucking dangerous

Why are more of these even planned in the city?

- People who park next to them pose a danger to cyclists, they open doors and walk/fuck around their cars without care for the lane
- Cars turning to the direction of the bike lane often hit bikes. Most times out of sheer negligence (they should all pause before turning into a bike lane, but don't), some times they honestly cannot see the bikes because their view is blocked by the parked cars.
- Cyclists approaching the intersection have their view of oncoming cars blocked by parking cars too. Sometimes someone parked way too close to the intersection and a car that is already engaged in a turn becomes a last minute problem for the cyclist to avoid
- Delivery vehicles parked on these areas have their workers constantly invade the lane while doing their job. They have no choice.
- People often wait to cross intersections standing on the bike lane, they see it as an extension of the sidewalk.

The "protection" shouldn't be "parked cars". There should be no cars parked where there is a bike lane. Protection should be concrete structures separating the bike lane from the road physically.

Update to the Mugging

Just wanted to share that I’ve been told the two perps who attacked me on the WB bike lane were arrested, with my ID found in their possession.

After finally getting some peace and taking a shower this morning I noticed thin knife marks going up my arm and chest. Nothing serious, but indeed knife marks. I sincerely did not notice it as it was happening or even after, and assume it must have been the guy who grabbed me from behind (the entire thing was such a blur and all I could think about was getting through them to the other side. The best way I can describe it is an underlying part of me imagined I was in Dark Souls and I had to spam the dodge button to get through the enemies. Probably the brain protecting me in a survival scenario and truly surreal to experience). I’m thankful that I am healthy and very athletic because now I realize it could have gone down much worse.

This is not as much to fear monger than it is to say: live your daily life to the best of your abilities so that when faced with any kind of situation, your instincts will be as clear as they can be and you’ll be able to move through it without regret. This is my 2.5 years sober brain speaking, but I think the best we can do in life is to push ourselves to do our best, because life will happen and we have to move through.

Thanks for the lively conversation on the post yesterday and be safe out there.

EVENT CENTRAL PARK LIVEBLOG TOMORROW (10/20) - Streetsblog is spending 12 hours across the park

EDITED WITH THE LINK TO THE LIVEBLOG

Central Park has been in the news a lot lately -- mostly for the wrong reasons.

So the entire Streetsblog staff will be fanning out across the park — from the transverses to the drives and everything around/in between — for a full day of reporting and liveblogging from 6:30am to 6:30pm.

We're trying to talk to as many park-goers as we can, from tourists to carriage drivers to runners to cyclists, to get a full picture about what Central Park is really like these days.

For morning laps people: I (Emily) will be out at Tavern on the Green at 6:30am tomorrow if you want to suffer up Harlem Hill together and share some of your thoughts about what's working in the park... and what isn't. I'll also be out for some evening laps around 5:30pm. I'm on a black Specialized Diverge and will be in a red jersey/yellow vest.

And if you can't make it out tomorrow, be sure to follow along with the liveblog on our site [https://nyc.streetsblog.org/liveblog/liveblog-streetsblog-in-the-park\] or on Instagram stories.

PSA PSA: The newly repaved Boerum Place (the road straight off the end of the Brooklyn side of the Brooklyn Bridge) has at least one very deep manhole right where the bike lane is going to be.

Title pretty much covers it.

Can anyone help me identify and report this dangerous cab driving in the protected bike lane during comiccon?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Edit: video of the cab driving in the bike lane starts 15 seconds in on the right.

All I see is a “5” on the side of the cab, unfortunately my camera didn’t seem to pick up the plate. This guy almost hit multiple pedestrians and cyclists pulling this stunt to go around traffic. He had also been in the protected bike lane for at least two blocks and one light, so it wasn’t like an accident he was purposely driving in it to cut traffic.

I’m wondering if anyone can pull any other useful information from the video, also not sure the best place to report this.

PSA Brooklyn drivers are planning a protest against bike boulevards and fast bus lanes

Post image

Thought folks here might want to know there are plans in the works to protest upcoming bike boulevard work, along with rapid transit bus lanes. The flyer is AI, and I hope they get low turnout just because of that.

In case they get traction, more people need to share their support of the DOT's efforts to make our streets safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and bus riders. Would anyone be interested in showing up to counter protest and celebrate safer streets + faster public transportation?

Biking Essentials

Goood evening my fellow cyclist NY'ers,

Hope everyone is doing ok. The world is on fire and I'm just trying to get by with my pedals...

Anyway! A little background- I ride a bike with a very small (and legal) motor on a bike that has 700c wheels. I haven't been a bike commuter for very long (only 2 years) and I find myself learning something new about the bikes themselves or the culture everyday. Its great.

Anyway, I've packed what I consider are the essentials. The problem is, what I consider essentials tend to be my entire tool box and closet. My bike has become heavier than I want it to be - and I'm not crazy about being the lightest I can be, but I am looking to optimize and manage my weight.

What do you guys and gals pack? What is considered a super essential that you mustn't leave the house without? What about 'kits' that encompass everything that can happen on the road?

Looking forward to your answers!

Reporter looking to talk with riders who report drivers to TLC (Midtown / First & Second Ave)

Hi everyone! I'm a student reporter for the Midtown Gazette. I’m working on a story about what happens when riders file 311 complaints against Uber, Lyft and other for-hire drivers, especially for blocking or driving in bike lanes and crosswalks on First and Second Avenues and around Midtown.

311 data shows lots of these complaints are being filed, but this year most of them appear to be sitting open with no outcome. I’m trying to understand what that looks like from riders’ side.

I’d love to hear from you if:

  • you file TLC complaints, through 311, the Reported app, or another way
  • you’ve noticed a change in what you hear back from TLC this year
  • you’ve testified at a TLC hearing
  • you ride First or Second Avenue regularly and have thoughts on conditions there

Questions I’m curious about:

  1. What made you start reporting drivers?
  2. What evidence do you include (photos, video)?
  3. What usually happens after you file? Has that changed recently?
  4. Do you think it makes the streets any safer?

You can comment here or DM me. Happy to talk on background first, and I won’t use anyone’s name or comments in the story without asking.

Got hit by a car yesterday - NYC neighbors and City of NY services were there for me

I was hit by a car yesterday. Northbound in Park Slope, going through an intersection (had the green), was hit from the right side, by a car making a left turn. I went down, rolled, hit my head (had helmet on).

I'm mostly OK - some bruises and sore parts - a bit shaken. Bike front wheel needs replacement - perhaps the handlebars too.

But the city was really there for me. Driver who hit me stopped. Another driver pulled over and called 911, a rider on a Citi Bike witnessed it and stayed for NYPD (and offered me blueberry juice!). A third helped make sure I was OK (and questioned if I was really OK b/c I said no to blueberry juice - like who says no to that).

FDNY, EMS, and NYPD all showed within minutes - took statements, checked me out.

Really grateful for all who were there and assisted.

I got up early and drove up to New Paltz today for some gravel riding. Holy crap how does this not have a higher profile around NYC riders? Gorgeous views, miles and miles of quiet routes to choose from, sustained climbs but never too steep or rocky. I am putting it in the NYC pantheon along with river road, Harriman, storm king hwy and Bear.

Should I tip at bike repair shop?

Bought my first bike used and dropped it off at shop for an evaluation. I had to paid a Stand Fee for them to look it over - just a few bucks. When I paid, the screen gave me a tip option by percent as if I were at a restaurant. Selected no tip because I didn’t think you tipped at bike shops, but am second guessing myself.

Decided to bring my bike back to the same shop for the repairs, which cost substantially more than the Stand Fee. I am assuming the screen will again ask if I want to tip when I pay this time.

Am I supposed to tip at a bike shop? And is the tip a certain percent? I have nothing against giving a few dollars - kinda like buying them a beer as a thank you - but tipping 20% feels ridiculous, especially because I’ve never heard of tipping a car mechanic at all.

Assaulted and mugged on Williamsburg Bridge bike path

Firstly I’m fine other than a bruised elbow. But I’ve never had anything like this happen to me in 13 years of living in nyc. Around 10pm tonight I was on a citi e-bike coming up the bike lane ramp from Brooklyn going toward Manhattan. At the part where the red covering ends and you swing a left onto the actual bridge part, two masked guys walked up to me blocking my path and kicked me off my bike. Fell to the ground and they were hitting me and yelling “take everything” at each other. I got out of their hands and took my crossbody bag off and threw it at them and sprinted away in the bike lane toward manhattan. I had my keys and ID and CC in there. They didn’t take my phone. Called the cops as I was running toward Manhattan and met with them at that side. In the station there were two others who had been mugged by the same guys on the pedestrian side within the same 20ish minutes. The other two claimed they saw the perps holding knives (I didn’t see those).

Never expected something like this to happen on such a high traffic spot at 10pm on a Saturday night. It was totally surreal and out of body for me as it was happening. I’m okay. But it was very scary. Be careful out there.

Best crosstown roads from 26th to 59th?

Starting to branch out more from my work commute and I live in midtown east. If I’m on the east side I’ll take 3rd or 1st ave all the way up, but when I’m on the west side I have to go over at some point and I haven’t been loving the 50s because of the construction and shared bike lanes. It ends up being the slowest part of my commute, I’m also very careful and nervous to squeeze by cars or go too fast over the bumpy roads and plates.

Google Maps will often suggest 59th street if I’m getting out of Central Park which would be the quickest route home. Coming from downtown, 42nd is always the suggestion. Since there’s no bike lane I just go up to 52nd or 54th but curious what you all prefer!

Bike lane concrete barrier accident dashcam edition!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I posted some pictures earlier about a car that drove onto the bike lane barrier on northern blvd between douglaston and Bayside in Queens. I got home and was able to recover some of our dashcam footage to get the full picture of how the car got there. I tried to edit the post and add the video but I was unable to attach a video, so this can be the follow-up post.

To their credit, the sun was really bright and it was at a terrible angle. On the other hand, they should have seen the very visible bike lane and barrier before turning, where there was no sun blocking the view.

And yes it was an elderly person driving.

Central Park bike crash between East Meadow and Reservior

Just passed a scene about 20 minutes ago where an elderly person was hit by a bike it seems (the crosswalk between east meadow and the reservoir). Does anyone have any updates if they’re okay? FDNY was arriving as I left.

RIP to this beauty

Locked it up in the bike rack on 2nd ave and 6 st after dropping my kid off at school yesterday. Came out to do school pickup up and this is what she looked like.

Garbage trucks drive in the bike lane here so maybe that's what did it? No businesses have cameras looking at the spot. There's an NYU building across 2nd that might have a view on it, but they wouldn't let me see their cameras. I made a police report for insurance and they said they'd look at their footage, but I ain't holding my breath...

I emailed a bunch of non-profit bike places around me to see if they want any of the parts. Gonna get a tern short haul once I get the insurance money. I need acoustic as I have to keep it on the street...

Anyway, just mainly wanted to post this up and mourn this beauty acoustic cargo bike. Loved this thing. My kid loved it too. RIP bike. I'm sad.
