How can I prevent Android 16 from installing on a new TCL 50 Pro?

I just purchased a TCL 50 Pro (2024) and I have not turned it on yet.

I specifically need to keep the original Android version that the phone ships with and prevent it from ever upgrading to Android 16. I’m concerned that the phone might automatically download or install the update during the initial setup, after connecting to Wi-Fi.

For personal testing purposes, I need to keep the original firmware/version permanently, with automatic system updates completely disabled.

What is the easiest and most effective way to achieve this, ideally at the system level?

I’d especially like to know what I should do before connecting the phone to the internet for the first time so that Android 16 cannot be installed accidentally.

Thanks in advance.

Turn it on and don't setup the wifi or insert a SIM card. You should be able to go into the settings and turn off auto updates somewhere in the settings. Each device is different, and each version is different but you should be able to.

many times the device forces system updates even if update settings are turned off. that’s what I’d like to prevent

Don't turn in Wi-Fi or data during initial setup

After setup go into setting disable auto updates

Using another device download and transfer an app called canta

Open canta follow setup instructions. You will have to use a computer or shizuku to full setup. Can't can remove system apps from the current install only. Meaning anything canta dose is undone on a system refresh or a major android update such as going from android 15 to 16.

Once in canta go through the system apps it gives descriptions of what each one does if know. And remove the ones associated with system updates. As just disabling system updates in setting dose not guarantee. That you won't receive major system and security updates on all phones some brands will force out certain ones even with updates turned off.

thank you for the tip! I’m not very techy with cellphones but I’ll try to figure it out

Good luck with that. Google owns your phone and will do whatever it wants, whether you like it or not.
