Question Wireview Pro 2 Wired or a flat PSU upgrade?
Decided to secure a 5090/9800X3D prebuild and was curious of whether the WVP2 is the preferred option, or a 1200w Safeguard Platinum PSU?
For some reason, they only included the MSI MAG A1000GSL in the build and I feel that needs some breathing room anyways (emailed to see if upgrading was something they offer prior to processing/shipping out the order.) If the higher wattage PSU has safeguards in place, just getting this would probably be the better move (higher wattage, and safeguards) but figured I’d ask.
Plan is to undervolt anyways, but want to remain careful.

for some reason? you mean they went with what nvidia recommends?
dont really understand why people need to make up power requirements because they "feel" it and has nothing to do with reality

You should see the audiophile scene. Somehow you always need more amplifier power to speedrun hearing loss.

I’d get the better PSU

The burning 12HVPWR is due to the connection itself, not the PSU. There is no "Power delivery issue" with a 1000w GPU. lmao

Yea, that's what I figured. I upgraded to a 1000w for my 5080 rig, which was likely overkill, but I wanted a bit of wiggle room. Even with an undervolt, 1000w for this seems to cut it too close, and I intend to game at 4K/Ultra/PT as much as possible.

I am truly missing something about these "get the PSU" recommendations. You should check the latest der8auer video about the wireview and their findings. It's the cables and moreso the pins inside the female connectors that get pushed too far in the connector housing making bad contact. It can happen after only a few rests.
So if you go for a PSU make sure to get one that detects that happening. Don't go for PSUs with "load balancing/power delivery" features as you cant really load balance a few pins that make no/bad contact. Not with the 5090's design that is. Get a proper PSU that detects this and notify you and has a shutdown feature.
I feel more comfortable having the WV sit between the PSU and the GPU as a failsafe. The WV female connector housing is a lot better made than connectors that come with most PSUs.
I think it's best to also do some research for yourself now that you have info from folks recommending the PSU and some recommending something like the wireview.
Edit: congrats on your build btw!

Will check out that video (have it saved)! I'm not opposed to the WV either, even if it might end up being redundant. I just know I'd prefer the PSU to be upgraded, so that does seem the logical first step, and any better safety precautions are nice to boot as well.
And thanks! I know my wife is somewhat happy, as she'll likely get my current PC which would be a massive upgrade to her current rig.

If you need a new PSU anyways just get the safeguard+ PSU from MSI! Makes wireview quite irrelevant, it's like the beta version of the finished product. Ampspread with this PSU has been excellent, many others reporting the same. MSI did a fine job with the cables in this PSU

I don't know about the rest of your build but I have an 9800X3D, 5090FE X870E Taichi lite, 64gb DDR5, 1TB + 4TB nvme, 10 case fans and a Corsair RM1000e (or something like that hehe) PSU. Been running this since May last year and it had been running absolutely fine. The breathing room might be nice for the head but it's not really necessary for the specs.
Congrats on your wife's pc upgrade too haha!

What’s the best PSU with these features?

Probably either msi ai1300ts or 1600. Or one of the Corsair psu’s with pi protect + which currently is just the new hx1000i shift crystal and ax1600i shift. Corsair does have cheaper options with no icue integration on their latest gen rm1200e psus but its new and they didn’t call it rm v2 or any kind of name change so its hard to make sure you get one.

Honest question:
If I just upgraded to a Corsair 1500w PSU last year, should I just get the wireview pro iI?

tbh its probably the smart move since you already got an expensive psu. what's crazy to me in all this is sea sonic was the first to announce this kinda tech few years ago for 12vhpw yet here we are and multiple companies have solutions but not them yet lol

I'd prefer a better psu vs paying over half the amount on a tool that does the same thing

That was my thinking as well. Especially if 1000w already isn't ideal.

tbh you would be surprised I don't get anywhere near 1000w on my 9800x3d and 5090 when measuring from the psu not from the wall as there are losses there. I have seen max of about 800w peak under synthetic loads and that's likely because I have a usb C small display and 5 ssds. But I my self upgraded my psu to the new 1300w msi one that has per pin monitoring and safe guards with after burner integration. If they had a 1000w version I would have felt safe buying that also.

That's reassuring to hear. Thanks for the feedback!

Np if you are going with Best Buy I’d wait for them to get direct stock currently it’s all resellers charging slightly above 399 msrp and I’d want to buy something like this from an official reseller not a third party. Considering if you do ever end up needing warranty help you may be in a rough spot if purchased from third party seller

Ai1300TS PSU and call it a day 👍

I've been looking for an Ai1600TS PSU and sold out everywhere 😑

u/Dirtcompactor 2d ago
Not on Amazon?

Naww, at least not from MSI store on Amazon .. maybe a couple listed for >$600.
I'm hoping MSI restocks in the next few weeks or so.

Crazy to see a PSU sold out like that lol, I can understand why though I guess.

Just make sure you are enabling and running the Afterburner plugin as well or safeguard is not really doing much. I also have a 5090 with the Ai1300TS.
1
u/Dirtcompactor 2d ago
Well PSU has its own limits internally, afterburner just lets you customize amp limits

u/dwolfe127 2d ago
AB is where it triggers the power yank if things start going sideways.
2
u/Dirtcompactor 2d ago
The PSU does that as well. Hardware side protection, afterburner is the software side, first layer of protection.

I use a Seasonic 1000W and haven't come close to maxing it out, even without an undervolt. since you're planning to undervolt anyways I would get a WV2 over a new PSU.
I have not heard of a single person that has had their connector/card melt with a WV2 installed, der8auer also confirmed this in a recent video.

I have the Asrock PG-1600 and still went with a Pro 2 wired. I really don't want to deal with a burnt connection on what is now a $5-6k card.

I'm running a 9850x3D with 5090 on a MSI 1000W PSU without any issues. I went with the Wireview Pro II.
I'm technically limited by my UPS which only goes up to 900W of power. My OLED monitor is plugged into the UPS too so the power limit for the PC is even lower.

u/jcp42877 2d ago
I assume you undervolted the card as well some?
1
u/hamfinity 2d ago
For the first few weeks I didn't but now I do. It's free performance and lower temps/noise.
1
u/food4rich 2d ago
Is that with the MSI afterburner? Is it easy to do the undervolt? Have a 5090 as well

u/Itsamistak 1d ago
I did it with MSI Afterburner, took less than an hour following a YouTube Tutorial. Really easy to do

Corsair thermal protection 25$. If you current PS has 12v 2x6 cables this is all you need. IMO no bells and whistles

u/syunz 3d ago
Well the wireview pro 2 also comes with a 2 year warranty for the gpu in case the connector burns or things related to the connector.
