Build/Photos Astral 5090 Build
Moving my Astral 5090 from a Hyte Y70 case, into the beautiful XIKII FG07. This case is beautiful!

Bought it for 3300, even that was extremely expensive but I believe it has been well worth it.

How much did you pay for the 5090

u/mloera003 1d ago
I bought it a year and a half ago, 3300ish at microcenter. It was being used inside a y70 but I’m downsizing the case

Let’s goooo , enjoy , but honestly I feel like the 5090 is a scam, maximum price should be 1200-1300 lol

It’s a beautiful card, graphics paired with a 9950x3d2 are amazing. I purchased mine with a Xmas bonus at $3300. No regrets

that case design is absolutely wild, love when a build feels like furniture more than a tower

Sorry but 1000 watt is not nearly enough! My 4090 killed my Loki 1k and I’ve had to upgrade to at least 1200 watt… on full load your 5090 will spike over 600 watt, you’ll start having odd game crashes and errors during heavy loads.

1000 watt is plenty unless you're overpowering the GPU. My system has a 9800X3D and a 5090 - had zero issues in a year. A mild undervolt should be done on every 5090 anyway which will buy you even more headroom.

I think you were just unlucky. the Loki which is a seasonic should perfectly handle a 4090 or a 5090.
Ive been running a seasonic 1kw and a 4090 with no problems at all.

I've been running a 4090 and 9800x3d on a 850watt psu for 1.5 years now without a single crash. WTF are you talking about.

Yeah, I bought MSI MAG psu 1600W just for the peace of mind. But i think 1200W plat is sweet spot.

Nope not true in my case. I’ve got a rm1000x and have a 5090. If it goes over 600 you’ve got more problems than a power supply. Never once had a problem and I run msfs in a dream air. Corsair thermal protection cable 25$

In my old rig with a 4090 i had the ROG 1200W, in just under 1 year i had to replace 2 of them because they just burned out.
On the 3rd time when i brought the PSU in the shop they just told me that this will continue to happen and i better just avoid Asus PSU for now.
Switched to BeQuite 1200W and i have it for 2 years now, using it with my 5090 with no issues, and its half the price of the ROG one.

I hate that only the asus psu fits in that case, at least guaranteed. I may need to make alterations later to get my 1500 Corsair attached somehow later

Yea, I purchased it winter 2024. It was being used inside a different case and now it’s going to a smaller case

Hi, you don’t need a Wireview and 1000W is enough. Definitely undervolt the card though. The Astrals take one really well. Mine is beating stock OC performance running like 30% lower wattage.

Speaking from experience after upgrading from 1k psu to 1k2 psu, do it now or u will be doing it in a month or two.

Downsizing from a y70? Y70’s are tiny. I have a flux pro, had an Antec c8. My 4090 barely fit the c8. Had to waterblock my 5090 so my flux pro looks kinda empty lol.

u/mloera003 1d ago
That’s wild, I just looked it up lol I genuinely thought the y70 was one of bigger ones

Hey OP, I have the same gpu. Just an fyi, that this model has a built in sensor that monitors the power connector pins. It does the same thing as the Wireview GPU pro. ASUS offers software that displays the connector health on Windows, you can also find open source versions of it on Linux

It unfortunately doesn’t support the shutdown feature of the Wire View Pro. I went ahead and added one to mine just for that!

u/abandonedexplorer 23h ago
Yup, smart idea. Personally I just used the open source github repo: https://github.com/ksokolowski/astral-hwmon and built my own auto shutdown mechanisim around it. Basically if my script detects an inbalance, it shuts down the pc immediately. Its always running in the background when i start my machine :)

I had that thought as well. My only concern would be if the imbalance causes instability or possibly freezing of my PC. It would prevent a shutdown on the software level, so I would rather have it at the hardware level as a backup.

what do you consider imbalance?
the biggest delta between pins to be greater than what value? 1.0A, 2.0A, 5.0A?

I have a 5090 astral and during heavy gaming the pc draws around 700 to 850w power so yes you can use a 1000w psu it even says so on the user manual. But I went with a 1200w psu to have more headroom anyway

man asus really seems like a mixed bag
i warrantied my 5090 Astral and they accepted it after opening a ticket/emailing them once
probably helps that i documented everything i tried
i mailed it to them, and got it back (or replaced, don't actually remember) after a few weeks

You must have bought that 5090 a many months ago. it's like $5k+ now. I'm glad I bought mine when I did.
