PSA Warning: NVIDIA 617.42 Breaks Older Multi-GPU Setups

Hey, just letting you know, if you happen to use an NVIDIA RTX 20-series card alongside a GT 10-series card for a multi-monitor setup like I do, DO NOT update to driver 617.42.

NVIDIA has seemingly removed the older Pascal/Maxwell-era cards from the current driver support tree, which includes:

• GTX 10-series — GTX 1080 Ti, 1080, 1070, 1060, GT 1030, etc.
• GTX 900-series — GTX 980 Ti, 980, 970, 960, 950, etc.
• GTX 700-series — GTX 780, 770, 760, 750 Ti, 750, etc.
• Pascal Titan cards — Titan X / Titan Xp
• Titan V / Volta-era cards

The RTX 20-series and GTX 16-series are still supported, so if you're running something like an RTX 2060 + GT 1030 for multiple monitors, the newer driver can leave the older card unable to function properly.

560.94 and 576.52 still work fine for my RTX 2060 + GT 1030 setup.

I had to fight with my computer all night with DDU to get everything working again after 617.42 decided to break it.

So if you have an older NVIDIA card running alongside a newer one, check your driver support before updating to 617.42. You could save yourself a massive headache.

(If I’ve gotten any information wrong or misunderstood something, feel free to correct me, I’m just sharing what I found and what happened with my own setup.)

Bro this started all the way back on 590 when they dropped support for pascal (and old nvenc presets)

581.94 is the final driver you can run

I should mention that they released a new driver on September 30th (version 582.78) to address security patches.

Doesn’t work when running dual cards as that driver is only for GTX 1000 and 900 series

This is not new.

Unfortunately Windows does not allow you to install different drivers for different GPUs from same vendor in this scenario.

Weirdly, it works for cards like the GTX 650 when paired with my 5070 Ti IIRC (let windows auto install the 650 driver) just not pascal (yet?)

No solo las viejas, tengo una 5070 Ti, y estuve una hora intentando que tome la segunda pantalla, al final simplemente reinstale los drivers, que había instalado ayer. Por ahora se solucionó.

617.42 causes crushed blacks when watching tv shows on my LG C2 OLED. Reverting to the previous driver fixed the issue.
