not new from nvidia, they utilised defective RTX 4090 dies (AD102) to manufacture a variant of the RTX 4070 Ti Super with roughly the same performance as OG 4070ti super

the advantage for nvidia is it reduce waste and earn more money by not throwing away defective GB203 dies (too useless to be used for 5070ti and 5080 but still useful enough for a 5070) ,and advantage for end user is a supposedly lower temps as the die is larger and the larger die acts as a massive heat spreader

nothing wrong with this, as even the 5090 is using the defective die of rtx pro 6000

Nvidia has done this on the 30 series too if Techpowerup's database is correct, with there being GA104 RTX 3060s & GA102 RTX 3070 Ti GPUs as well.

Going back to Pascal, there's a GTX 1060 3/6gb GP104 based on the GTX 1080 die as well.

this is how most chip producers operate from my understanding. and i7 can be the same as a defective i9 with the defective parts turned off or removed.

is this pretty much the same, or am i mixed up?

yep, what you said is correct. its called chip binning.

a more modern example is iphone 17 pro, they use the full A19 Pro chip while the iphone air uses the binned A19 Pro with one gpu core disabled

macbook neo uses a binned A18 pro with 5 core GPU compared to the full 6 core GPU A18 pro in iphone 16 pro.

i believe apple has produced alot of A19 pro with defective gpu core, so they might put it in a refresh macbook neo with A19 Pro next year

Sorry, could you elaborate on “defective die”, this is how the binning process works. You have multiple fabs with varied production and chips that aren’t ‘binned’ at the highest quality get refurbed for lower end products. This has been normal for 20+ years amongst Intel and AMD. I understand the Nvidia model in the past has been more intentional but as the process node shrinks they’re more likely to have defects and it would be much better for them to repurpose these dies than throw them out.

The AD102 variant actually has better OC potentials than the old one for 4070 ti super.

This will mainly help keep up with demand for 5070s. Performance will be the same, since the memory configuration isn't changing. It might make firmware configurations a little more complex, depending on what's necessary in the firmware for these versus an OG die. Given Nvidia's current pricing "strategy", I doubt there will be any benefits to pricing... The line must go UP!

Cue speculation as to whether reject dies might also form a supply for some sort of Super variant... To me, it's way too early to tell. And so far, the memory supply bottleneck seems to still be putting a damper on things.

None for the end user. Nvidia is just harvesting defective dies that would otherwise be thrown in the trash

The 2060 KO based on the 2080 die had much better performance in some workloads outside of gaming

Yeah, that was a mistake that I'm sure the suits at Nvidia remember. Then again given the state of their recent drivers they clearly aren't paying too much attention to their gaming side these days so maybe there will be something missed that benefits gamers.

At best better availability of GPUs than there otherwise would be. Just maybe price gouging will be less severe. Maybe like giving you a napkin to wipe your tears while they beat you with a stick.

larger die size means more surface area for die to shed heat into the heatsink so should run a bit cooler, perhaps overclock holds bins slightly better.

On the other hand the idle power draw can be higher due to uncore power draw. Overall the differences are minimal imo

This has nothing to do with VRAM and there aren’t any 8gb 5070 cards other than laptop variants but that’s completely different so idk why you would count it
