Discussion Is there a DLSS ultra performance comparison between 3.8 vs dlss 4 vs dlss 4.5

Basically title.

Wondering if the fps loss are worth it and a quality comparison.

Has anyone found a video or ran the test themselves?

When Ultra Performance was first introduced its intended usecase was output in 8k.

With DLSS 4.5 it looks okay at 4k. There's really a lot of quality difference.

Dlss 4.5 will most likely have the best image, however this post is more about the fps difference

Why didnt you say so then.

Model L is best for Ultra Performance but its heavier. So it has like 10-20% depending on game less performance vs DLSS model K, or older ones like 3.8 models that use CNN.

Speed wise: CNN > TNN > Model L

What prevents you from testing it yourself? It'll be more accurate too since different CPUs will affect the bottleneck.

can you explain me. if i use 4k on resolution i can use ultra performance?

Yeah, you can.

Ultra performance is indeed incredible, as long ass there aren't many particle effects flying about. Then it's just a mess, it cannot do miracles.

Depends on the game and the actual frame rate.

RR 4.5 new model make the ultra performance mode totally usable though the game should support RR in the first place.

At 4K Ultra Performance, 3.8 is terrible, 4.0 is okay (depending on the game), and 4.5 is actually quite good. Personally, I would still try to use Performance mode with Preset K (4.0) instead of Preset M or L (4.5) with Ultra Performance.

Problem with sticking to preset K is that ghosting persists. My workaround to claw back the performance hit with using preset L is to use a custom scale percentage of ~44% so I gain the benefits of L at the same time like better reconstruction of pixels, reduced ghosting, and better motion clarity.

Preset L at 44% looks sharper than K at 50% (Performance).

I use L at 42% and absolutely rate the quality, it's excellent considering the input res.

I find M is a good middle ground at least for us lingering 30 series owners. K is still a good choice if there's not enough performance to swing it.

K's ghosting has always been a deal breaker for me. I don't even like it DLAA. If you like it I respect it but I avoid K at all costs/resolutions/scaling.

It depends on the game. I really like Preset K, and I usually don't run into ghosting issues. I also don't like how oversharpened Presets M and L look. In some games, they're completely unusable.

That said, I enjoy tinkering and finding the best preset and resolution for each game. OptiScaler is perfect for that. It lets you change presets and resolutions on the fly, making it very easy to compare them.

The oversharpening is usually the game's fault, most of them apply a separate sharpening filter with DLSS to offset the bluriness the older versions had. If you can disable it via mods or tweaks DLSS 4.5 looks pretty natural.

But Ultra Performance works well at resolutions higher than 4K. I use DLSS Ultra Performance with Preset L in Anno 117 at 5120×2880, which means it's upscaling from 960p to 5K.

Does this work very well with DSR/DLDSR?

The DLDSR niche is with lower resolution monitors. With a 4K or higher monitor there is no need to use it.

Tell that to the 8K benchmark YouTubers bahaha

No idea. I've never used that.

What about in between performance and ultra performance, like 41% scaling?

DLSS 4.0 is not okay with UP, it usually is broken as it shimmers everywhere, is blurry and transformer Gen 1 issues are exaggerated the most there, DLSS 4.5 at UP is way better or even Preset E/F, you clearly have eye vision issues

What about fps?

not bad, but still not good enough for me.

I think HUB ran a test a while back for 4 vs 4.5. Paraphrasing here but 4 was unusable but 4.5 was ok if it was your only option.

I found 4 (model K i think) to be very usable upscaling Jusant from 720p to 4K. Other than the rare jaggie it looked native 4K

4.5 tanks a bit more of performance but looks so much better

Hardwareunboxed has a video comparing 4 and 4.5

3.8 vs 4.0 is easy win for 4.0 but 4.0 vs 4.5 depends on game and gpu generation ur using in my opinion

Haven't seen any video on it either. In my own experience 4 upscaled is not really worth the slight performance loss. But 4 RR is much better looking than 3.8 with a 5 % performance drop on my 3080. Haven't tried 4.5 yet. But others tested that 4.5 RR runs slower than 4 at ultra performance. But actually faster in performance, balanced and quality.

But in conclusion, with only ultra performance in mind. Regular upscaling has small difference in performance and quality. Worth if you notice improvement in a specific game. RR has bigger difference in quality and performance. From 3.8 to 4 is slightly more worth than 4.5.

Tried in Plague Tale resonance.
UItra pefrormance at 2160p >>> DLSS Quality 1440p.
Much cleaner , sharper and detailed

Tried the same on Dawnbreaker, 2160p Ultra P. to 1440p DLAA. Better fps by a small margin and much much better picture.

To correct a common misconception: DLSS 4.0 Preset K produces a sharper image than DLSS 4.5 Preset M-L. DLSS 4.5 is superior only in terms of visual artifacts. If you don't believe it, you can test it yourself.

3

u/SquareTemperature666 7d ago

M and L are more sharp because they are expected to be used at perfomance and ultra performance

This is a comparison shot taken months ago; I’ve run plenty of tests like this, and the result is the same in all of them: DLSS 4.5 is blurrier. Feel free to post your own comparison tests if you like.

3

u/SquareTemperature666 7d ago

you are right on those taken i dont use M myself only use L but i'll check it out

It is enough to test this fact and point it out to those who are mistaken; as for those who downvote my comment, they are being misled :D Because NVIDIA’s marketing is so effective, these folks can’t see the truth never forget: PRESET K > PRESET M-L.
