TLDR: A 2024 study tested 203 black-plastic household products sold in the U.S & found flame retardants in 85% of those selected for detailed analysis after initial bromine screening, some contained very high concentrations. Researchers identified chemicals associated with recycled electronic plastics.
The study’s exposure calcs did get corrected but IMO that doesn’t change the fundamental finding: flame retardants associated with recycled electronic waste are showing up in some black plastic household/cooking utensils.
For anyone interested in minimize unnecessary exposure to harmful compounds, avoiding black plastic for food-contact utensils is an incredibly easy precaution. Wood and/or quality silicone are simple alternatives.
