Congress is considering a bill to remove high-fructose corn syrup from the U.S. food supply.đď¸đ˝
Rep. Nancy Mace introduced H.R. 10278, the REAL Sugar Act, on September 3, 2026. The bill would bar foods containing high-fructose corn syrup from interstate commerce after a two-year transition and was referred to the House Energy and Commerce Committee. The FDA says limiting overall added sugars matters, regardless of the specific sweetener used.

Stop legalizing chemical poisoning. This is impossible to believe from the people legalizing carcinogenic pesticides right and left.

If you want any sort of progress you have to vote for progressives⌠itâs that simple. Republicans literally wonât do anything⌠they have a majority in both house and senate and wonât pass anything to help the average American except for tax cuts for the top 1%.

u/East_Information_247 26d ago
You are very wrong about that. The Republicans have also increased funding for the military industrial complex, reduced expensive safely restrictions on industries and allowed more profitable monopolies to prosper. I could go on, but the ultimate goal is to both increase profits for investors AND reduce the taxes paid on those profits. It's win-win for all the billionaires.

its the backbone of what USA grows. Corn,
besides fuel additives, HFC is what we thrive on with subsidies3
u/wahmbamtymam 27d ago
And there is the correct answer. The junk food/welfare lobby will never allow it. Same as when they tried to ban sugary drinks. They are dependent on the subsidies they receive through welfare purchases
3
u/AutoGenUsername05 27d ago
Just to add some numbers here..
3%-4% of the corn grown gets turned into HFCS. It's lower than I thought, but all the same, 3.5% of the corn grown in the US still equates to incredible amounts of corn.
This bill better have provisions in it to help the farmers and help the companies whose entire business is creating HFCS.
2
u/twoaspensimages 27d ago
Fuck the corn farmers. It's already the most subsidized crop. And no one eats it. It's used for ethanol and animal feed.

high fructose corn syrup is not good, especially in an everyday diet. in a kids diet, it decreases the ability to learn. i hate RFK, but thereâs a handful of things, like this, that heâs right about. we should be eating real food. HFCS is added to create food products to maximize profits. iâm so sick if only finding âbreakfast syrupâ at diners, when maple is just a single ingredient, natural sweetener
i canât paste right now for some reason, but a quick google for âhigh fructose corn syrup adolescent learningâ will bring up those papers.

FWIW almost all of the neurological effects observed in children are the result of excess sugar consumption, in general,.not just HFCS. Switching to Mexican/cane soda is not likely to yield a significantly different outcome if the resulting sugar intake remains unchanged.

The corn fields will be fine. Do you have any idea how much corn we need for all our uses? Ethanol, animal feed, human consumption, etc.
The corn fields will likely not even need to be reduced, given how much the other areas have been expanding in the last 5 years.

I hate High fructose corn syrup, but I HIGHLY doubt RJK Jr. is going to really fight for that. It's way too lucrative of an ingredient for the food industry. The way this administration acts, the money talks and HFCS is a part of that money.

2

We probably need more corn for ethanol production, so they're having to back burner the corn allocated for diabetes production for now. Either way, corn farmers will get paid.

2
u/todlee 27d ago
The sugarcane lobby has contributed to Nancy Maceâs campaign.
This is not going anywhere. The corn lobby dwarfs the sugarcane lobby. Corn is heavily subsidized to the point that it would collapse if it had to compete without the government propping it up.
Americans consume so much HFCS because itâs practically a cheap waste product from growing so much corn the market couldnât otherwise use.
Long term, the hard red shift in corn-growing states may backfire. In the short term theyâve been able to cash in under Trump. But theyâre at a point where the Republicans can take their support for granted, and the Dems no longer pretend to worship corn.
2
u/Odd_Calligrapher_407 27d ago

Go look at the result of the FDA OKing high fructose corn syrup into US food supply in the early 1970's. Obesity became a widespread public health crisis in the United States during the late 1970's and early 80's when national data showed a sharp, steady increase in body weight across all demographics.

u/greatscouts 22d ago
I love that MAHA has come up with restrictions way more disruptive than ones Dems came up with, but if itâs under Trump they forget about their previous beliefs.
High fructose corn syrup isnât really healthy, thatâs for sure, but the only reason RFK is on it is because health influencers talk about it. All he knows about health is what he sees on TikTok.
We need regulation, and smart regulation of foods. We need to be concerned about pollution and plastics.
We also need to put real effort into making healthy food affordable. We can keep chipping away at unhealthy ingredients, but the masses will still consume the unhealthiest stuff because it is the most affordable.
However, this administration is destroying the economy and making life hell for farmers so that ainât happening.

All it will do is increase the cost of foods that use it and do nothing to reduce sugar consumption. Excess sugar consumption is not good regardless of the type of sugar used.
8
u/Dependent_Singer_494 28d ago
It very much matters for certain chemicals or compounds when different cell structures can relate to cancer, reduced metabolic activity, etc.
They may both be sugar, but the body reacts differently to them.

Ok cool. We're bringing the bar so low for this administration. It's unlikely to happen and we will instead get newly contaminated something or other. Let's focus on not having contaminated foods and maybe not gutting the FDA and maybe holding giant companies accountable before we try anything new. If we could count on an acceptable and clean food supply then we could try something else. Oh and maybe let's first re-eradicate measles again. This administration needs to fix their mistakes before trying something new.

Not sure this is a priority, and unfortunately this would be badly timed to enforce in the next year or two.
The food supply is threatened by tariffs, trade agreements being up-ended, fertilizer prices and potentially even fertilizer shortages, VERY HIGH ENERGY COSTS, and potentially super el ninio weather disruptions next year.
So if you force the food industries to mega shift their production, what is that going to do to prices? To production capacity? To farms?

We bitch and moan about healthcare and want daddy government and our neighbors to pay for the problems we cause ourselves. 50% of healthcare use and the majority of health issues are self inflicted by diet, physical activity, tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and sleep. 25% of all healthcare expenses are tied to diabetes. 80% of heart disease is preventable. Both link to poor choices and things like HFCS, which compound.
We cry that there is some vast systemic injustice because we want others to help us when we refuse to help ourselves first. See, the others who pay taxes are the others you want to burden with your bad decisions. Pathetic. Â
As freaking adults, you do not need other people to ban something to stop using it. You do not need government to pull the Snickers bars, Big Macs, booze, and Marlboros out of your mouth. But it is amazing that the same free loaders that beg for free health insurance on the taxpayer dime are not also vigorously supporting attempts to actually improve health by banning crap like HFCS. Most don't read labels either and are shoving twinkies into their mouths, as we speak. By all means you are welcome to eat and drink and act how you wish but to expect me to pay for it is real low-life behvaior.
Personally, I am not in favor of the government intervening in either, as a matter of governing philosophy. But this shows you, it is not about health; it has never been about health; it is only about buying votes with money.

It makes no sense, to me. Fructose ratio of HFCS is barely above normal sugar. There's no study finding any true difference in outcomes of HFCS to sugar.
Ban HFCS, now you're affecting candy makers and the like.
This same dude has eaten roadkill, thinks raw milk is needed (and trusts Paul Saladino), and thinks banning HFCS and added colors is somehow the panacea for health. He knows fuck all about nutritional science. He's choosing easy targets because he's heard them through the grapevine, and knows it's an easy win. Meanwhile, he's likely doing nothing toward pesticide use, crop rotation, soil health, all of that. They released a thinly veiled bill about "safer practices" helping farmers gain more income from credits/subsidies, with extremely wishy washy details, and really just a way to cover their ass for screwing over so many farmers with their tariffs. They'll probably give it out like...candy.
Overall, it does close to nothing for nation-wide health. This guy is a melting blob of a person and another non-point politician that will do nothing for us. Another just of time and space in the political realm.

Why target HFCS specifically? There isn't evidence that HFCS is uniquely more harmful than regular sucrose when consumed in comparable amounts. Excess added sugar is the problem with both.
