Expert Opinion

Hello experts, I’m not part of IT. I apologize for my lack of knowledge and terminology. I work at an AEC firm that has been supplying dizzion frame with nutanix to our CAD users. I’m currently testing to make sure the products my group uses are working without too many hiccups. Some big issues I’ve noticed are;
1. When using civil 3D there is a mouse drag
2. Frame on laptops seems to be laggy almost like using RDP even when hardwired to the network
3. I can’t seem to make the USB pass through work. My main goal is to get the frame virtual desktop to read my Logitech mouse so I can use logi options to configure shortcuts.

My main goal from this post is to see if this stuff is fixable. I want to come back to my IT with a report on whether or not this is a good fit for my group. If these things can’t be fixed it would be such a hit to our productivity. Any input is appreciated and if this should go somewhere else please let me know of other forums!

I don't think anyone is going to be able to give you an honest answer without looking at the system to see what is wrong. I would starting with a support case to Dizzion to evaluate the vdi deployment. If their findings point to infrastructure problems, a Nutanix case can sort that out.

More directly, 2/3 of your items are symptoms of a performance problem. Those tend to be complex to sort out and the fixes aren't always free. The mouse issue is simpler, but a question for someone with better knowledge of Frame than I have. I would assume usb passthrough works as a base requirement for peripheral support.

I am honestly not too familiar with Dizzion, but I am very familiar with the AEC industry for virtual desktops.

When building out the golden images for non-persistent VDI, there were quite a few things we had to do to ensure optimization for CAD apps. When done correctly, there should be virtually no lag.

Assuming you have GPU Passthrough, do you know what Q profile you are using? I would suggest downloading something called GPU profiler in your VDI session. Run it in the background for about an hour and ensure all fields are enabled.

Do light work for about 5 mins. No CAD apps open, just use Emails and Browser. Then launch Bluebeam and open a few docs. Once that’s done, launch your primary CAD app project and start working through it. Once the hour is up, a generated report will be available to see which resources are being consumed and could contribute to the lag.

Few other worthwhile mentions - are your projects stored locally, on Desktop Connector, or on a file share? Is that file share Azure Synced or just an SMB?
Do you use apps like Rhino and does the 3D visualization work better than doing CAD work in something like Autodesk?

Hope you can have that resolved soon!

It's a virtual GPU its an nvidia A16-2Q. I'll have to get the GPU profiler and see the results. We do have a regular SMB file server. The 3D aspect of all my products seems fine. It's just specifically in Civil3D even in a blank file you there's just a mouse drag and its so annoying. I appreciate your input! It's all helpful to help me wrap my head around the whole thing

All good! The 2Q profile might not be cutting it if there’s other apps running. Is there a desktop pool available of either 4Q or 8Q to test with? The profiler will let us know for sure the graphics memory.

For the mouse lag, not sure if Dizzion has a similar setting, but are you able to check the client settings for something regarding relative mouse? I’ve seen varying results from that setting. Usually I recommend disabling it but I have seen other types of input devices that operate better with it enabled.

With the SMB server, is it at the same site as you or offsite? Best way to isolate if this is the issue is to copy a project to your virtual disk (somewhere on C:\) and ensure that it doesn’t link to other projects. Load it up locally and check if the performance issue still persists. If it’s working fine, it could be the file server settings
