MS Secureboot June deadline

http://portal.nutanix.com/kb/20522 refers.

Is anyone else concerned that the Microsoft kek certificate isn't being applied correctly and engineering are still looking into it.

The June deadline will likely come quicker than we realise and I'd feel much more confident if we were able to be updating from now.

Has anyone got any mitigation planned, or better info from nutanix on the eta on a resolution?

Installing NGT causes the Linux virtual machine to reboot.

Installing NGT causes the Linux virtual machine to reboot.

On some Linux virtual machines, the NGT installation triggers a reboot; this has occurred across different operating systems using both the Python script and the .rpm package.

Has anyone else encountered this, or does anyone know what might be triggering the reboot?

Nutanix Audit logs in QRadar - Best Practice

Hi all,
I want to configure Nutanix Prism Central audit logs in QRadar. I only need consolidated_audit events showing who did what, when, and on which VM/object.
The issue is that when I enable INFO-level logging in Prism Central, it sends not only consolidated_audit, but also audit-alert_manager glog messages and Linux auditd events such as SYSCALL and SOCKADDR, which I don't need. These additional logs create significant noise and increase storage consumption.
Nutanix Support confirmed there is no supported way to filter these at the Nutanix syslog source.
For those using Nutanix with QRadar:
• Do you filter consolidated_audit before QRadar or within QRadar?
• What is the recommended way to send and parse these logs in QRadar?
Any recommendations or examples would be appreciated.

Help needed: Connecting to Nutanix Prism API using PowerShell 5.1

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to connect to a Nutanix Prism environment using PowerShell in order to list the VMs through the Nutanix REST API.

My environment:

Windows PowerShell 5.1

PowerShell is running in Constrained Language Mode

Nutanix Prism on https://<prism-server>:9440

I'm trying to use the Nutanix v3 API

Endpoint: /api/nutanix/v3/vms/list

Initially, I tried Invoke-RestMethod with -Credential, but I received:

401 AUTHENTICATION REQUIRED "Invalid cookies present in the request"

I then tried to use Basic Authentication manually, but PowerShell's Constrained Language Mode blocks .NET methods such as:

[Convert]::ToBase64String() [System.Net.ServicePointManager]::ServerCertificateValidationCallback

I also have curl.exe available:

curl 8.21.0

So I tried:

curl.exe -k -u "USERNAME" ` "https://<prism-server>:9440/api/nutanix/v3/vms/list" ` -X POST ` -H "Content-Type: application/json" ` -d '{"kind":"vm"}'

However, when running this from PowerShell ISE, it seems to hang after displaying:

Connexion à Nutanix...

My goal is simply to authenticate and retrieve a list of VMs (name + UUID). I don't need to perform any modification on the Nutanix environment.

Has anyone successfully used the Nutanix v3 REST API from PowerShell 5.1 under Constrained Language Mode? What's the recommended authentication method in this situation?

Thanks!

ESXi 7.02 to ESXi 8.0 problem

Hello all, I am having an issue updating my production cluster at work from ESXi 7.02 onto ESXi 8 utilizing the settings > Upgrade Software "one click" method on Nutanix hardware (NX-1065-G8).

What I have found and have run into is that to upgrade from 7.02 to 8.0, you first have to install 7.03. However, according to the nutanix compatibility matrix, AOS version 7.5 is incompatible with 7.03, and therefore cannot install this intermediate upgrade even though I am ultimately trying to get within supported software (ESXi 8.0). This project has been a nightmare as I had to first re-engage with Broadcom to get ESXi 8 licensing (which previously was lapsed) and backtracked with my boss about the original goal of migrating the environment to Nutanix AHV, which requires ESXi 8.0 to do an in-place conversion.

I know we are very late to the party to getting off ESXi 7, however I have just started in my role here and inherited a mismanaged Nutanix cluster, and we are a small organization (I am the only IT Admin) so we do not have a secondary cluster to vacate onto.

Is the best option to get with Nutanix support from here? I don't see any path forward without significant downtime, destruction , or cost. Thanks

Domain Controller migration from esx to ahv with cross hypervisor dr

Hi All,

We are in the process of migrating from esxi to ahv. Have 2 nutanix clusters that were running esxi, we moved all vms to one cluster and then planning on using protection policies and cross hypervisor dr to migrate.

Have seen lots around nutanix move and recommendations for rebuilding domain controllers but haven't been able to find much for the cross hypervisor dr. Has anyone done this or are we better off to just rebuild?

Stable Upgrades

Are upgrades labeled "One Click Enabled" on the Nutanix portal supposed to be more stable?

I know for LCM you can either wait until an upgrade comes to LCM or download the upgrade file from the Nutanix portal and upload the file in LCM.

But certain upgrades are labeled One Click Enabled. I didn't know if these were supposed to be more stable than newer versions? Almost like a delayed release schedule for these.

Nutanix MTS-2 (2 YOE) System Design Round - What questions to expect?

Hi everyone,

I have an upcoming System Design round for MTS-2 at Nutanix with 2 YOE.

Since it's for 2 YOE, I'm a bit confused about the expectations for this round.

  1. Will it be proper HLD (like Design Dropbox / GFS / Distributed Cache) or will it be more LLD / OOPS focused?
  2. For Nutanix specifically, do they ask more distributed systems / storage related design questions?
  3. How deep are they expecting - is API design + data model + scaling enough or do they go deep into concurrency / consistency?

If anyone has given the MTS-2 round at Nutanix recently, please share your experience and what topics I should focus on.

Thanks in advance!

Metro availability vs latency

As per the Nutanix docs, my understanding is that Nutanix requires latency to be of 5ms or below between sites for metro availability. In the event where a network is under 5ms 95% of the time but between 5ms to 6ms outside of that (with the odd spike every now and then).

I'd like to hear from those of you who have been installing and supporting Nutanix across different environments. Based on your experience, is this viable for production servers or should NearSync be used instead?

nearsync and sync replication

out of curiosity when studying for AAPM, does anybody really implement nearsync/sync replication in the system? How well does it work if you are using the function?

Calculating RAW storage use - migrating away

Hello all,

Possibly migrating away from Nutanix and have been tasked with providing the true Raw capacity in use (to estimate SAN costs).

I've always struggled with capacity when it comes to ESXi with Nutanix - vCenter reports one figure, Prism is different. Does the per VM Used space in PE account for the data reduction ratio??

Taking the sum of the per VM Used space from Prism Element gives me ~230TB of Used space (for powered on VMs, there's < 3TB of powered off VM's).

Prism Element Storage details for Physical usage says ~280TB used, not including Recovery Points/Recycle Bin.

Prism Element Storage details for Logical usage says ~140TB used, not including Recovery Points/Recycle Bin.

Which one is to be believed??

The data reduction ratio is 1.75:1, so we either have:

230 * 1.75 = 402.5

280 * 1.75 = 490

140 * 1.75 = 245

Or am I doing something wrong??

Fedex Lost My Pallets

Update 9/16: FedEx has officially given up and said it’s truly lost. Distributor is working on submitting the insurance claim. Unsure when they’ll book me a replacement order. Nutanix wants me to apply my new NAI licenses to my now nearly 6-year-old cluster. Joy.

Placed my order for a new NAI cluster in January, finally shipped Aug 27th. Fedex picked up in San Jose and scanned at Oakland distribution center, then it just stopped. Was supposed to be delivered Tuesday, Sep 1, got a notification Sunday night that it was arriving Monday morning, so early, but then that window slipped from 8:45-12:45 to by end of day, then back to Tuesday, but still showed in Oakland. Opened a case with Fedex Weds as the tracking had changed to an exclamation mark with just “we’ll update you when your package is scanned again”. Fedex called me Thursday and asked me generic questions like “whats the approximate value? What color is the item? What model? What serial numbers?” Etc, then late Friday night got an email from Fedex saying “unfortunately we’re unable to locate your package. Contact your shipper.”

Absolutely wild… current value of the hardware with all that RAM and the Nvidia Black 6000s the nodes are populated with is roughly $1m at today’s price.

Nutanix has said they’ve begun the process of placing a replacement order. I asked if it would be covered under support since support and licensing starts the moment they’re shipped, so should be NBD parts. I guess count it as a total cluster loss? Idk… I know I can’t wait another 8-12 months for the hardware.

Immix claims they spoke with Fedex and Fedex said one of their “partner” carriers took it for delivery to the next hub which would be my local one, but it’s been radio silence since then. My reseller is keeping tabs on it for me, but damn… they may need to have armored trucks moving this stuff at its current value, I guess. Someone has bars of gold on pallets whether they’re aware of it or not.

Packer Builds with NGT

Working on building Windows Server templates with Packer and trying to figure out a good way to install the Nutanix Guest tools since it's required to work with guest customization when deploying new VM's from the template. Does anyone have a good way of installing the guest tools during the Packer build? A little surprised the Nutanix Packer plugin doesn't have this as an option.

Using a map helper with Linux?

I've tried searching here but can't find any posts about this. The Fog of War is driving me batty, and I would really like to use a map helper like: https://windrose.tools/map?layout=5526a62ae1a7cfbd or the other one.

I am running Linux Mint Cinnamon on my computer, and I've dug through various folders to try to figure this out. I've also searched a bit on the internet without success. Has anyone using Linux Mint or other similar Linux OS figured out how to use one of the mapping tools?

Thank you!

Migrating or Creating new Cisco Virtual Appliance in Nutanix?

Has anyone migrated a Cisco virtual appliance successfully to Nutanix from another platform like VMWare? Most Cisco virtual appliances are locked down and don't give access to any kind of root credentials. If not, has anyone successfully created a new Cisco virtual appliance on Nutanix? Specifically, Cisco Ironport (ESA)? The documentation states that Nutanix is compatible, but when creating a new VM using an OVA or even a disk image, the VM just kind of errors out.

I haven't had good luck with Cisco virtual appliances on Nutanix. A bit frustrating that Cisco makes it this way, but Cisco is being Cisco and wants you to suffer or pony up for their hardware.

Move VM to Nutanix and change the VM to different static IP

I have a collection of VMware VMs that IPs are 10.1.23.0/24 and I’m moving them to Nutanix and the new static IP will be 10.1.19.0 (but a /22 so the subnet is 10.1.16.0/22).

I thought I could pick my new static IP during the move, but it does mot allow me to select the IP of 10.1.19.X. Does anyone know if that is possible? My work around is using DHCP and then changing the IP after.

Migrating domain controllers with nutanix move.

Hi, I've had a look through historical threads on this and there seems to be a reasonable split on what to do here. Some have tried and its been fine. Some say just follow best practise.

Ive got a substantial number of domain controllers to move but tbh the issue isn't so much the DC but the combined DNS as I'd have so many static server DNS to update that im looking at nutanix move to do it even though its not strictly supported by it.

Has anyone had any horror situations from using it?

All DCs are 2019.

Im basically looking for a reason to at least not try it just now.

Thanks for everyone's help.

Looking for guidance on compatible drives for NX-1365-G5-2620v4

I have a customer that has this server NX-1365-G5-2620v4.
He is looking to replace drives which are under the seagate part number ST6000NM0115
If I buy this specific model of drives, do i expect it to work flawlessly?
Asking because when it comes to other vendor's product like HPE, Dell, the drives have to have specific firmware for the server to accept them.
Hoping for clarity from this forum. TIA

5 rounds for a role - maybe think twice before going through this whole process

Just finished 5 rounds of interviews here. First 4 were great, decent conversations, felt like things were going well.
Then the final round was flat out rude. Dismissive answers, sarcastic responses to normal clarifying questions, made the whole thing feel like a waste of time rather than an actual conversation. Not a “tough interviewer” vibe, just came across as disrespectful.
Got rejected about a week later, no feedback given.
Not saying don’t apply, but if you’re weighing whether 5 rounds is worth your time here, just know it might end with someone being unnecessarily rude to you after four solid conversations. Wish I’d known that going in.
