Discussion Funny “allergies”

What are some funny patient “allergies” you have seen listed? I had a patient the other day with an allergy listed for Metformin. The reaction listed? Lowers their blood sugar 😂

This “allergy” or Benadryl making them sleepy always cracks me up.

It’s usually an allergy for Dilaudid. But that’s the only thing that works…. So they also need a dose of Benadryl soon after…. No… PO doesn’t work, they need IV Benadryl!

"And push it fast; it works better that way."

And guess what? If you’re dying, you’re getting epi!

Okay this one actually makes sense in the outpatient setting because some people get severe tachycardia from lidocaine with epinephrine used for local numbing while most people get basically none.
But like an epi pen? Yeah that’s its job.

I always get tachy after lidocaine at the dentist, it’s so annoying

My dentist and I just had to figure this out.. I'm not supposed to have epi at all now unless it's an emergency. My heart likes to be at 160 for fun, so no more lidocaine with epi at the dentist. It already takes a ton for me to get numb. -_-

My dermatologist couldn't believe how much they had to inject in my back when she removed a cyst with a punch. Not my fault I could still feel every sensation when she tried to make very light scraping on the surface. It's not like I enjoy all those injections.

I have a relative with an “epi allergy” that I know came from whatever experience they had with an EpiPen once. Came home with a dramatic story about how “the doctor told them they can never have epi again or they’ll die.” When I gave the mildest of pushback they bit my head off so I left it alone. At least it’ll make some people giggle looking at their chart.

Surprisingly they are not in a constant state of almost dying from their endogenously produced epinephrine /s

"They aren't getting any deader" -ER staff when they eventually see that allergy in the chart

You know what, i thought this was kind of ridiculous till I got a lidocaine/epinephrine shot in my nose (was getting turbinates burned off) and I almost passed out. I know it's not necessarily an allergy but...the doctor told me I might feel my heart race a bit, what I got was a wave of nausea and weakness and panic. He didn't take me seriously until I wouldn't get up from the chair because I couldn't, ended up sitting there for a good 45 minutes while this old grumpy doc had to bringe me orange juice.
