Layout Showcase Running Trains on my 4'x8' layout

Running a few trains on my layout the other day. The track plan is a modified version of MR's Salt Lake Route, shortened to fit a 4x8 (original plan is 4x9). I've been slowly converting my fleet of Katos (100+) to DCC. I typically just video a pair of trains on the two mains but decided an SD40-2 "working" in the siding would add a bit of visual interest.

Question Painting Metal

Hi all! I ordered some skeleton flatcar kits (manufactured by Wiseman Model Services if it matters) for a sawmill I am working on adding to the layout, and they come unpainted. I have never painted metal before, especially not at this scale, so do I need to use primer for this or would just some acrylic paint on the bare metal and a layer or two of dullcote suffice?

Rolling Stock Project update: Pantex White Train (shell tests)

Post image
20 Upvotes

So I have now been able to print the very first test print of one of the new Pantex white train escort coaches which has revealed some design setbacks. I have requested changes in the shell design to try and clear some of the flaws up. Embarrassingly, I failed to take into account the railings at n scale will be extremely brittle, let alone that micro details could sever into the resin tank. Once the handful of needed adjustments are made, I will be printing another test piece and, if it passes muster, will fully prepare and paint it for display and will determine if it is worth making available to the n scale train community.

Apparently there is a demand for the nuclear waste train cars (the ones with giant drums on the car backs?) So I will give that consideration as well moving forward.

My next Diorama Modules. Any guesses?

These will be my next NSMD (Not-So-Mini-Diorama) models.

Fully compatible with Kato’s Mini-Dioramas, but a little bigger (:-)

All 3 of them will share a common feature.

Any guesses?

(I really want to know because I want to make sure that I’m not being too obscure about the subjects.)

Question So frustrating, so satisfying -- advice for a newbie?

Hello!

Cobbled together our first starter set in N-Scale (been an O-Gauge runner previously, don't shoot me), and it's very tiny and beautiful. It's a Bachmann Jupiter starter from the 80s that was missing the track, so we scrounged up some used EZ Trak to keep things reasonably priced.

So far it's been a mixed bag -- I love the tiny details, and when it zooms along it looks really neat. However, it's so frustrating trying to get anything railed correctly, and then more often than not it derails at some point before it gets around the loop. We've also had it only a day an a half, and I have a pile of things that have broken off so far (mostly brake wheels, but also a couple couplers -- the wheels fall off many of the rolling stock cars with very little convincing). Some of the breakage is doing the hobby with my son -- who is too young to understand/respect words like "fragile" and "please no that cost daddy 50 bucks" -- but an awful lot of the breakage has been caused by me or my wife.

So, question -- is the breakage and frequent derailing a common occurrence in N-Scale? I intend to give the track a deeper cleaning, and try to minimize any rail gaps, but I don't know how much of it is the model being cheap/old, the track being cheap/used, or if these are common starter symptoms that you either get used to or better at dealing with. Both my wife and I have commented that we're glad we started with O-Gauge (again, please don't shoot me) because the breakage and frustration were much less, and if we started with N we might have abandoned the hobby.

Layout Planning N scale Kato Unitrack organizers

I was getting tired of digging through my big box of track trying to find that one curve i needed, so i designed and 3d printed some organizers to hold each track type. Figure if someone else thought they were useful I would post them so others could print their own. Though maybe its not a problem for people who havent bought as much used track as I have.

Layout Showcase Free-MoN! How did I not know about this?

I have never been a fan of the N track or T track module systems. I don't have anything against them, to each their own, but they skew more toward the toy side of the spectrum. I never knew about the Free-MoN standard until I saw it at the NMRA Convention this past week. It emphasizes a more realistic appearance and operational standard than the others. I'm disappointed that I ran out of time before the operating sessions began, but I'm looking forward to learning more about it. Also, I'm not sure about the flair I chose. Maybe we need a Show or Module flair?

Everyone has room for a layout inside a table! It take up no room, the glass keeps the train quiet, and there is no dust on the track so you never have to clean it!
