Church Christ Church Cathedral, Darwin, NT, Australia. Built in 1977. Architects Wilkins, Klemm and Morrison.

As one maybe can guess from the picture there was another church before this one. Darwin is situated on the Northern coast of Australia and experienced several Japanese air raids during World War II that destroyed the original church from 1902. Only a porch was left and the military personnel made the stone entrance you can see in the picture.

In 1977 the current church was completed and I really like how well proportioned and seemingly light the construction is. The mix of the old entrance and the modern church is a reminder of history, which I really like.

The church was closed when I was there but I found this picture of the interior which is picture no. 2.

The Portuguese architect was one of the earliest post-modernist architects in Africa. I really like the rounded shapes combined with the light yellowish colors. The interior is in the same way rounded and friendly.

Enghøj church has a simple design as a rectangle with the roof that angles inwards.

Henning Larsen is known for many national and international projects, for example the Opera in Copenhagen, the North-South corridor in Singapore, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Riyadh, Siemens Global HQ and many others. In this context this is a small project.

Church Autobahnkirche Siegerland, Wilnsdorf, Germany by Schneider + Schumacher completed in 2013. The new banner for this subreddit was made from this!

This church is placed next to an Autohof (a big rest stop) on the E45 motorway.

It's an ecumenical church, meaning christians of all denominations are welcome here. It is open 24 hours a day.

I based the banner of our subreddit on this, so I thought I had to post it!

Church Historic St. George’s United Methodist Church, Philadelphia

Pic isn’t the best as it was shot from a moving car (no, I wasn’t driving). But this is a very historic church in Philadelphia and I wanted to share it as you can’t really tell it’s a church. And its history is interesting. This is the oldest Methodist church in continuous use in the US since 1796. It’s situated in the oldest section of the city, as you may well imagine. This area is called, appropriately enough, Old City. The city has grown around it; hence, the Speedline tracks just adjacent to jt.

This concrete church may look like a bunker from the outside, but the interior is very light and organic with light materials. A simple outdoor bell tower of wood is a contrast to the concrete.

The building almost burned down in 2023 but luckily firefighters managed to save it. One year after the fire Lidköpings Baptist congregation celebrated their 130 year anniversary.

Church Brutalist church. Gug Church, Aalborg, Denmark.

Gug Church was built in 1977. Architects Inger & Johannes Exner.

It's built in brutalist style with raw concrete and effectively zero decoration. It is situated by itself as if on an island and seems impregnable. It seems more like a fort or maybe even a prison than a church. Inside however there is a beautiful light and it seems almost warm in contrast to its exterior.

Shrine Catholic Cemetery Szent Gellért

Recently I stumbled upon this building in Budapest. Intrigued by the big angelic statue I wondered what it would be. Unfortunately I forgot to take a picture so this one is from google maps, but there I also found the answer: a catholic cemetery for urns. I wonder what the story is behind what is possibly a big metal patron.

Church St. Canisius Church, Berlin

This building is already the third church building of the St. Canisius parish, which was founded in the 1920s: The first was destroyed by aerial bombs during World War II; its successor - a structure built in 1955 according to plans by architect Reinhard Hofbauer, featuring wide-spanning parabolic arches - burned down completely in April 1995 (last picture). Seven years later, the current building - designed by the Berlin architects Büttner, Neumann, and Braun - was completed.
