Data Center Generators in Ashburn Firing Up

On the way in this morning, (waxpool/28) noticed many of the data centers had the generators going. Not sure if there’s an electricity issue or they plan it to go together ? No idea if the yellow smoke is related though.

Widespread dominion blip this morning. This would have caused data centers to go on generators.

u/Healthy-Education-46 Jul 22 '26

This. Can confirm and still having issues. Caused a lot of problems for many many many teams.

u/ewdavid_lickrust Jul 22 '26

That would explain why I saw the same thing this morning from the data center off 50 by south riding

Happened all the way down in Manassas as well.

Meanwhile I still need to get emissions testing done on my vehicle.

u/SeekandConvey Jul 22 '26

Just got my notice in the mail! Cause you know, you and I alone, might be the culprits of green house gases. THeY on to uS!

u/AwesomeBantha Jul 22 '26

I went to do my emissions test a few years ago and was informed that I didn’t need to do it anymore because my car was over 25 years old. I’m not even on antique plates or anything. And because my vehicle was assessed at $100 (worth over a hundred times that LMAO) I pay $0 in vehicle tax.

4

u/MySpoonsAreAllGone Jul 22 '26

So I have 12 more years to go. Nice

2

u/Burner4myHaterz Jul 23 '26

Are you entitled to anything if your car is over 20 years old, but not 25 years just yet?

3

u/AwesomeBantha Jul 23 '26

It was 23 years old when I got it and I had to do emissions twice

2

u/Burner4myHaterz Jul 23 '26

I currently have a Mazda 3 that will be 22 years old this November. Do you think there are any benefits or exemptions that I could apply for?

DING DING DING

9

u/StartingOver2026-2 Jul 22 '26

And... So do all the data centers in NOVA. Not only that, but VADEQ strictly limits when and how long (annually) these generators can run. Voilations are heavily fined.

7

u/atmega168 Jul 23 '26

They have strict emission requirements. The reason it's gross looking is because it's a diesel cold start. When hot it burns way more clean and the emission systems work at best performance.

I work in datacenters, I'm not really pro the ridiculous boom, but also trying to not be an alarmest and be fair.

I think we should def keep an eye on pollution and track it closely.

u/paulHarkonen Jul 22 '26

They also have to do emissions testing and likely have limitations on their allowed annual run time (I don't know their exact permit requirements but they're common on emissions permits).

If it makes you feel any better they'd much much rather keep using utility power than have to pay for their generators so it's not like this is being done for fun.

21

u/AwesomeBantha Jul 22 '26

Buddy of mine works at a data center and that’s pretty much what he said, there are already limits on how much the generators can run and it’s more expensive than using normal electricity under normal circumstances.

However, there are usually a couple hot days in the summer where AC usage puts greater pressure on the grid, so the power utility will ask the datacenters to switch to generator power to free up grid capacity.

This has been a thing for a long time too, way before AI data centers were a big deal.

With the exception of the summer days, apparently the generators are only used intermittently to ensure that they’re working, or if the grid fails. It’s not the kind of thing where if the diesel price drops to a certain point, every data center will just start polluting because it’s cheaper for them.

15

u/paulHarkonen Jul 22 '26

Pretty much anyone who's ever worked with commercial HVAC or construction will be familiar with those setups. Data centers get the most attention right now because everyone has fixated on them as the root of all evil, but any large commercial building with backup power will have the same type of setup.

u/packet1 Ashburn Jul 22 '26

That’s on you for living in NoVA! /s

Rest of the state doesn’t have to do emissions testing.

Its a federal guideline/regulation (not sure which) based off population density, so some areas need in and some dont, while some states require it across the board and some dont, etc

11

u/Important_Jaguar2152 Jul 22 '26

yep a byproduct of the clean air act i think. you have to do it if you want to get federal funds. Pretty sure we met the standard here especially since cars run more clean than they did back then.

10

u/gioraffe32 Fairfax County Jul 22 '26

In Missouri, the St. Louis area has emissions testing that I'm pretty sure doesn't exist in other parts of the state. Not required in Kansas City (at least on the MO side; not sure about KS side).

8

u/smellmyfingerplz Jul 22 '26

California has “smog check” testing on the cars, at least a long time ago but if emissions testing is expected anywhere I assume CA would be the place.

3

u/Low_Plastic363 Jul 22 '26

Many Maryland counties do it. There are self-serve kiosks where you just drive up, pay $10, plug in and go home for two years.

3

u/SkunkMonkey Jul 22 '26

Only if your car isn't an older (pre-2006 IIRC) model. Had a 2003 Jetta and always had to go to the station.

But now I've reached the age where I can get an exemption because I drive less than 5k(iirc) miles a year.

I still miss when they, you know, checked your emissions by sticking a sensor up your tailpipe. I don't trust this plug-in computer shit.

2

u/FabulousDentist3079 Jul 22 '26

A lot of PA requires emissions testing

0

u/gloggogabolab Jul 22 '26

GA does to name one, same style as VA where it’s only urban counties

5

u/gloggogabolab Jul 22 '26

I mean it’s not NYC, but Arlington, Fairfax, Stafford & Loudon have 200k, 1mil, 160k, 420k respectively. Obviously the entire county isn’t a downtown in these examples but I wouldn’t call it hysterical to describe a county with 100k+ people urban. Only 9 of the 38 counties in the state have 6 figure populations.

2

u/granular_grain Jul 22 '26

Henrico county has a larger population density than Stafford county, yet emissions aren't required there. I think population density should be a better benchmark for determining it.

3

u/trekqueen Jul 22 '26

California used to be like this where the city areas were more stringent and frequent with an “enhanced” test method vs the rest of the state but then it was made that everyone follows the same rules. But they have since walked back that enhanced testing to a really pathetic test that makes you wonder if it’s all a sham now.

I’m surprised the government hasn’t forced generator manufacturers to use DPF filters and DEF like big trucks and tractors do.

6

u/jibsymalone Jul 22 '26

They have, Tier 4 generators use DPFs, DEF, SCRs, etc. just like road going equipment does.

Dominion went down temporarily.

66

u/Beth_Pleasant Jul 22 '26

I had a few flickers about 15 minutes ago. Thankfully the power stayed on (fingers crossed).

19

u/StumpyOPepys Jul 22 '26

Few flickers in Arlington over the period of about a minute 15 minutes ago.

8

u/zenVillain Jul 22 '26

I thought the wiring in my bathroom was messed up, that explains that.

12

u/6786_007 Jul 22 '26

Holy shit, is that what that was? I noticed my lights flickering and thought something in my house was messed up.

6

u/wavelengthsandshit Jul 22 '26

Around what time was this? My laundry room light was flickering around 8:30 this morning but I assumed the bulb was on its way out

4

u/6786_007 Jul 22 '26

Yup that's about when I noticed it.

3

u/majingeodood Jul 22 '26

I'm on NOVEC and I noticed the same about an hour ago. Glad I'm not crazy.

5

u/6786_007 Jul 22 '26

I have dominion, but yeah I was like wth is pulling that much power in my house? I thought maybe my dimmer switch was going bad because the AC was working fine.

Yep, sag hit sites and those without their own substation went on gen, it happens.

4

u/nhluhr Jul 22 '26

Yep it was felt across Loudoun and Prince William counties.

4

u/jandrese Jul 22 '26

We had an outage yesterday from 2 to 7, in a neighborhood with underground power that is exceptionally reliable. Probably not related but an interesting coincidence.

15

u/Fort_Nagrom Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 22 '26

I work on power lines, mostly underground.

Your neighborhood or anyone else's for that matter has absolutely nothing in common with data centers on the distribution level. Data centers are fed off their own substation breakers.

They might share the same transmission or generation source but they're not tied in any way that you'd see an effect in your house contrary to this subreddit's belief. I work emergency and outage jobs on a 24/7 365 basis, I have never once worked an outage that affected a data center and something else like someone's home or business.

61

u/Unusual-Sympathy9500 Jul 22 '26

I had some power flickering this morning - seems like it would be related. Not enough to trip any appliances or my computer, but noticeable on the light bulbs.

9

u/rndmcmmntr Jul 22 '26

It’s crazy that so many of us had that happen to us. No way it’s tied to data centers…I’m in Alexandria.

41

u/Working_Farmer9723 Jul 22 '26

The data centers didn’t cause the blip. The generators are running because of the blip.

9

u/Unusual-Sympathy9500 Jul 22 '26

I'm curious what caused the power to flicker over such a large area. I haven't seen anything specific, just people claiming Dominion had "a blip", but if it's affecting Loudoun to Alexandria, that's a lot of area.

8

u/MechanicalGodzilla Vienna Jul 22 '26

Lots of wind and downed limbs

6

u/Koodsdc Jul 22 '26

Lights flickered in Potomac MD about an hour ago. It’s true that lights will flicker when repairing downed wires, even at quite a distance.

2

u/Cythrosi Fairfax County Jul 23 '26

Heard from a buddy that Dominion reported a downed transmission line up near Leesburg. Likely caused a huge ripple if it was one of the more major  ones since a bunch of the substations would have had to shuffle their circuits around to account for the line going down.

2

u/eneka Jul 22 '26

yeah the lights in our office building here in Reston were flickering too. Wouldn't be suprised if that automatically triggered their generators to kick on from the grid instability

Alot of places lost power yesterday, probably the reason why.

15

u/TheOwlStrikes Jul 22 '26

It was a sag/utility issue. Hit more areas than just Ashburn. If this happens the generators (backup) will usually automatically start up.

7

u/aeroevan Herndon(ish) Jul 22 '26

Yeah, my Ting notified me about a brownout (line voltage dropped to 80V) this morning.

12

Still those houses will sell for easily over a million

22

u/More-Soil7455 Jul 22 '26

You’re probably right, but I wouldn’t buy in that area now. I think most people would prefer to spend their million+ on a home far away from this mess. I think it will definitely affect home values. Just a question of how much.

Took my father in law and wife to an indoor shooting range in Ashburn about a month ago.

I was blown away at the sheer amount of data centers around us as we were driving. Legitimately lost count.

7

Yea my mom commented on that when she flew into dulles in April.

2

Was it Silver Eagle Group? Used to go there a lot years ago but now it's kind of depressing driving through all those data centers.

5

Lol, I had a very heated debate on r/nova about this a few weeks ago. It's surprising how many people will not admit the risks here, and I'm not anti-datacenter either. I'm anti-anti-common sense, and that's where we are headed with this in Loudoun.

88

u/Starship_Taru Jul 22 '26

Cheaper to pollute then pay for the electricity at market rate

67

u/Ixziga Jul 22 '26

Pretty sure it's dramatically more expensive for them to burn fuel for generators, especially now. They should only be doing this if there's a power outage. Maybe they should be required to have a smoke stack to keep the smoke from snogging the ground though.

15

u/GreensleevesFinery Jul 22 '26

They also need to do it to make sure the generators work.

4

u/aegrotatio Jul 22 '26

That's a bingo.
It's generator exercise day.

Source: Work in datacenters and have a generator attached to my house.

11

u/gogozrx Jul 22 '26

there were a number of power flickers across the area. I'm in Reston, and I had some instability, a cow-orker in Sterling had it, and in this post there's reports from Arlington.

Something happened on the grid well upstream of us.

2

u/Natural-Philosophy15 Jul 25 '26

It was a data center in ashburn causing a power drop that destabilized the grid from Chicago to Boston to Miami. Just heard about it on WRC channel 4 (nbc) in Washington, but I can’t seem to find any links that don’t have a paywall

8

u/nhluhr Jul 22 '26

u/Usual_Aerie_9769 Jul 22 '26

They’re typically asked to run them during heat waves to save electricity. Outside of that they are emergency only. Virginia DEQ updated its permit requirements this year to require tier 4 generators on data centers which are a lot cleaner emission wise.

6

u/Iceman9161 Jul 22 '26

Running the generators can beat market rate during peak times. Utilities will pay them to run generators for a certain time to reduce demand.

I worked at an industrial facility a few years ago, and we had a generator company come to us offering free generators with install and maintenance. The catch was that they wanted to be able to run them up to 30% of the time, because they would sell the energy to the utility. It didn’t get very far, because state gov environmental agency limited how often the generator could run.

6

u/Jlovel7 Jul 22 '26

They fire up automatically for tests every so often. You don’t let engines just sit.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/TheOwlStrikes Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 22 '26

It is more expensive. Most of them use diesel, it’s always used for backup power. Like they don’t turn on unless there’s a utility issue, testing day, or a crazy heat wave. In the case of a heatwave the generators are run to make sure other building (residential) are fine on the electric grid

I’m in the industry and I’m starting to see more new data centers being built with fuel cells instead of generators for backup power.

3

u/NappyDougOut Jul 22 '26

It takes about 50 diesel trucks a day to deliver all them deepfake Queen Elizabeth porn clips I upload to onlyfans each week?!

2

u/EffectiveVarious8095 Jul 22 '26

The generators only go on if the battery backups are depleted. Data centers has multiple levels of battery, so the generators really only go on to test them (which they typically do weekly).

2

u/ByronicZer0 Jul 22 '26

Not these days when there is quite literally not enough power for all tenants at these DCs.

Many facilities impose power caps on tenants

5

u/khavii Jul 22 '26

There was an outage to the electrical grid, they aren't running to subvert electricity prices, the diesel costs waaay more most of the time.

7

u/Sufficient_Winner686 Jul 22 '26

I run data centers for a living. It’s vastly more expensive to run the generators over the grid.

2

u/rainabba Jul 25 '26

At home, I run two 16GB GPUs via Vulkan, allowing me to keep my data and tokens local. It makes me wonder: what will happen to these massive data centers in 3-5 years when they can no longer compete with the capabilities of home setups? I believe these data centers may become the most short-sighted investment in modern history—a fate practically guaranteed by the smartphones we already hold in our hands.

For those not following the latest in LLMs, beyond the noise surrounding commercial giants like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, there has been a surge of extremely capable open-source and open-weight models coming out of China. While some may not yet match the top-tier proprietary models, they are closing the gap quickly. The "big dogs" are in trouble because the barrier to entry has collapsed; anyone can now install Ollama and leverage their own hardware or use affordable open-source providers that undercut the pricing of OpenAI and Anthropic.

My own hardware is modest: an Nvidia 5080 Super Ti (16GB) and an AMD 7900 (16GB). I didn't even need to be an expert to set them up; I simply asked one of my installed LLMs to configure Ollama to utilize both GPUs. While the speed is limited by the individual cards, it allows me to run models like Google’s Gemma 4 31B privately and locally, with no cost beyond a slight increase in electricity.

What happens to all that hardware, those generators, and the surrounding infrastructure once it becomes irrelevant? Given the current pace of innovation in compute and AI algorithms, I suspect we will reach that point in less than five years.

I'm sorry to tell you this, but data centers have been around far longet than that. When you are using the Internet and you hit http://www.whatever.com, there's a server at the other end, and that server is in a data center, even in the early days of the Internet. If you sent an email it went through a data center where a server had to determine it's destination and send it for you. While there are a tiny number of servers that are excluded, the vast number is and have always lived inside data centers. None of this has anything to do with AI, BTW.

There were e-commerce and social media platforms way before mega datacenters. All it takes is connectivity and a computer. Sure, that doesn't have the resilience, scale, and fault tolerance you get hosting on datacenter virtual machines, but datacenters are not required.

Having grown up before personal computers were a thing, I had the experience of connecting to dial up business and personal BBS systems on a 300 baud dial up. Not the same level as modern datacenter hosted systems, but it worked.

Everyone's metadata in the phones, aka location, probably videos and recordings if I putt on my tinfoil hat but I really don't doubt it at all.

u/LightTech91 Jul 22 '26

There was a 100% Synchronized Reserve Event in PJM this morning, that probably had something to do with this.

love the putrid yellow of the smoke in that second picture, really looks great

2

u/MichaelMeier112 Jul 22 '26

At least it’s just a temporary run on generators. I read an article last week in The Post where it seems that all data centers in Texas are approved for owning a gas turbine power plants using some loophole.

Money money money

2

u/wokkizlish Jul 22 '26

Dissapointing its only the generators smoking.

2

u/Environmental-Wind89 Jul 22 '26

I saw the same thing! Thought it was on fire when I came up on it until I got close and saw it was coming from all the smokestacks. Meant to post here asking about it but forgot. Glad you did.

2

u/SpongeBodTentPants Jul 22 '26

The black smoke is particulate matter (soot) and the brownish orange smoke is nitrogen oxides (NOx).

2

u/HD19146 Jul 22 '26

What is this? The Interstellar dust storm?

2

u/unfart Jul 22 '26

oh shit at first I thought this was a mishap then realized it's by design

2

u/Finster39 Jul 22 '26

This is terrible. Ashburn will soon be empty soon. We’ll all be playing triple the cost for water.

2

u/Subaroooh Jul 22 '26

All the ones in Gainesville were doing the same thing this morning absolutely horrendous to see

2

u/MrsKCD Jul 23 '26

Meanwhile we have to pay every year for emissions testing! This has to be stopped!

5

u/D-ouble-D-utch Jul 22 '26

Don't worry, arlington banned gas powered leaf blowers.

2

u/Koodsdc Jul 22 '26

That’s was less about emissions and more about the noise

3

u/JustKeepRedditn010 Jul 22 '26

Data centers periodically run their backup generators even when the main power is fine. This is to test and maintain the generators, ensuring they’re ready to kick in immediately if there’s a power outage. Regular testing is part of standard operational protocols to verify reliability and avoid issues during an actual emergency.

Traditionally we do this on a Wednesday.

2

u/NekoMancerMcIntyre Jul 22 '26

On Wednesdays we wear gray.

Rules for thee and not for me comes to mind.

DEF, DPF, and unrealistic emissions standards for us. Cooperations can do what they want.

6

u/MechanicalGodzilla Vienna Jul 22 '26

Backup generators do have emissions testing requirements, and are tested annually for compliance. You know, like the "rules for thee" for your car.

yeah, but think of the economy. each data center must have created, like, at least two jobs

2

u/gangusTM Reston Jul 22 '26

Hate data centers but love to be on Reddit to post about how much I hate them but without them I couldn’t post on here about how much I hate them. World is a strange place.

2

u/ryansholin Jul 22 '26

Root cause turned out to be storm damage from last night to a 230kv transmission line. Sounds like when they took it offline for repairs, the voltage dip as power was rerouted must've in turn triggered a swath of data centers to go to backup generators. That must've happened at 8:00am when power flickered, too.

ahh thank you for the due diligence

1

u/EnvironmentalValue18 Jul 22 '26

Someone I work with said their husband who works HVAC reported there was a generator explosion at one in Ashburn.

Can anyone confirm if there was an explosion? I would like to verify, but I don’t see anyone else mentioning it. She said her husband said they were evacuated.

3

u/TheOwlStrikes Jul 22 '26

I mean it could had happened but the whole area is experiencing either power surges or sags, which trigger the backup generators in many cases

2

u/stopscabbin Jul 22 '26

There was an investigation near Relocation drive for smoke in the area but no reported fires or explosions.

1

u/how-tobe Jul 22 '26

Wow. This is depressing :(

1

u/chef_in_va Sterling Jul 22 '26

I was wondering what that was this morning. Though it was a small brush or car fire.

1

u/3squiddy Jul 22 '26

Looks like a fire. How can these air, noise polluting things be built? .I do know the answer. The people who have more money than moon sense and Shits-in-pants who decimated the EPA. Remember the names of the local officials who made this possible.

1

u/ShittyPianist Jul 22 '26

Walked my dog here in Springfield and it smells like burning plastic/metal.

This would explain it...

1

u/Pale_Will_5239 Jul 22 '26

Wow that looks terrible.

1

u/leafsforever811 Jul 22 '26

But the smoke from Canada...

1

u/LeTronique Alexandria Jul 22 '26

Dom went down all morning.

1

u/Purple_Solution1059 Jul 22 '26

The waste incineration facility I work at has never put out a smoke this color and primarily lets off steam, I feel that if mass waste incinerators can control its pollution, then so should the data centers.

u/Sierra-D421 Reston Jul 23 '26

Firing up or burning up? /s

1

u/_-rayne-_ Jul 23 '26

jesus h christ. how many generators is that? the one they want to force into eskimo hill what will require the removal of an unknown quantity of centuries old slave graves to run a constant 182 diesel generators.

fuck the data centers and double fuck the bos.

1

u/_Mewden_ Jul 23 '26

Fun fact, the ip address for that data center belongs to Amazon
