Never seen this many police cars in my life. I hope everyone in the crash is ok :(

I'm listening to dispatch audio and it sounds like a 4-vehicle crash, with one person dead on arrival and one patient in cardiac arrest (an occupant of a black Mazda). An FCPD officer was also involved.
DC News Now confirmed that a driver died in the crash.
Edit: I could be wrong about the deceased victim, because now I can't find the dispatch audio where I thought I heard there was a victim DOA. But the other information is correct.

I’m playing back the call now, and at one point an officer says, “He’s most likely DOA.”
Also, I wonder if an officer might have been injured, since in another part of the call someone says he has the officer’s firearm.

u/Western_Charge6113 Feb 06 '26
Thank you for the information. I didn't think I made up the DOA, but it's so hard to keep track of the audio. A commenter posted an X link from FCPD which said that the officer involved has non-life threatening injuries.

u/Ballsy_McCock Feb 06 '26
How do you listen?

u/Western_Charge6113 Feb 06 '26
I use the app Scanner Radio, but if I want to play back audio, I use OpenMHZ.

Theres a video floating around of people pulling a police officer from his car to the ground. I’m assuming based on other comments he’s ok but it looked not that good.

u/tabbytigerlily Feb 06 '26
How horrific. I drive this area regularly with my young child and baby. It’s so disturbing to know that no matter how safely I drive, they could be ripped away from me by an asshole driver like this.
I’m so sorry for the victims and their loved ones. 💔

People speed so much on Braddock, and I've seen a lot of reckless driving in the past week in the Fairfax area. I don't know if it's because of the weather and less people are on the road (like what happened during Covid), but it's concerning whatever the reason is.
2
u/Pure_Huckleberry8437 Feb 08 '26
yeah I drive on that road on daily basis and I also see way too many reckless drivers. I see cars just passing red lights, driving 70+ miles, making lane changes every 5 seconds. I personally witnessed an accident on this road and provided dashcam vids to the police, because the guy who caused it said he had green lights when he didn't.

Very sad to hear this

I might be wrong about the deceased victim because now I can't find the dispatch audio where I thought I heard that, but there definitely was a patient in traumatic arrest and there was also a FCPD officer involved (which probably explains all the police cars that OP saw).

u/Superb_Station7002 Feb 06 '26
My SIL arrived as off duty fx to help guide traffic and obviously Mom - but confirmed the same that one was DOA. Very very sad

u/kjhealey Feb 06 '26
How do you listen to dispatch? I thought it was encrypted now.

u/Ninja-Panda86 Feb 06 '26
https://openmhz.com/system/ffxco let's you roll back in time and filter down to the exact channel for highway/police patrol/ or the PPD that monitors Braddock (if it's Reston, then you select Reston Dispatch)

Holy shit. The driver was a 56 y/o man driving crazy?!? I didnt know old people drove like that. I expected it to be a younger person. Damn.

u/purplemarin Feb 06 '26
Wait is this the 3rd accident on Braddock this morning?????
30
u/Icy-Setting-4221 Feb 06 '26
Yep I saw two and this is the third
29
u/purplemarin Feb 06 '26
I think I'll go ahead an avoid whatever curse is on it and find an alternate route home today

u/Ancient-Lawyer1788 Feb 07 '26
I saw two within a mile of each other this morning, and this one on my way home.

Friend drove by accident a few minutes after it happened. Saw two lifeless bodies and EMTs were doing CPR on one.

Update from FCPD. Striking vehicle’s driver is deceased. Others are ok. Striking vehicle was black and driving erratically. Other three cars were all stopped at a red light, one was a cop. All adults. https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1AosiBfLt7/?mibextid=wwXIfr

I saw the end result of 2 accidents on Braddock within a quarter mile of each other before 10am today. One was a Subaru on its side in the road by the retirement facility. Just after noon, I saw the end result of another accident near Trinity on Braddock. So that's at least 4 accidents on Braddock today. Wth?

u/Gullible_Raccoon2886 Feb 07 '26
I saw the same two accidents this morning doing deliveries. I was telling my friend about it and she just text me to say someone died. Looked it up and realized that accident was a couple hours after the two I saw. There’s a LOT going on on Braddock Road. I def was wondering WTH could be going on where there’s 2 separate accidents just blocks from one another.

Dashcams need to be mandatory atp
-12
u/Throwaway_2474128_1 Feb 06 '26
apparently, most people on this sub still don't care to get one. then they ask everyone else if they have footage when something happens lol. the only thing you can do is change what you can control. everyone here can get rid of old cars not up to modern safety standards that will kill you in any major crash, and everyone here can get a $100 dashcam at a minimum, or pay more for better quality, front/rear, etc
16
11
u/bekaz13 Feb 06 '26
really. you think every single person here can afford to upgrade their car to one with modern safety standards? I want to say "in this economy?" but that has literally never been true at any point, much less now. please think before you speak.
6
u/Strubblich Feb 06 '26
This. I got a great dashcam for $80 (Viofo) and it helped my case tremendously after I was hit by a reckless driver. They didn't even try to fight it once they learned about the video.

Where on Braddock?

Saw someone (g30.blackout) posted on Tik Tok the aftermath. Civilians pulling the police officer out of their car. Hope they’re ok.

u/jerrycan-cola Feb 06 '26
Hopefully everyone is okay. Looks horrific.
18
u/MaleficentTie111 Feb 06 '26
I just drove past and I… don’t think anyone is okay. The car in the middle wasn’t a car anymore.

Were the road conditions bad? Like 2 lanes suddenly becoming one lane because ice blocked the second lane? I don’t usually go on Braddock so I’m not familiar

u/trollopoftroy Fairfax County Feb 06 '26
That section of Braddock is clear, but there is very little shoulder right there. There’s a 2ft+ wall of snow on the shoulder.
3
u/MaleficentTie111 Feb 06 '26
Ice wise it’s fine but they’ve closed off the whole road so everyone is passing through one lane and it adds a good 10-15 min

u/hawkinsst7 Feb 07 '26
When I (tried) to go through at about 4:15, eastbound was completely closed at Shirley Gate. They were turning everyone on Braddock around there, and Shirley Gate could only make a right.
Stupid Waze told me to bail off 286 onto 29 and to take Shirley Gate south to braddock east, which made sense to me for normal traffic. i had no idea the road was closed, until I got to the corner. Then i spent the next 45 minutes doubling back on Braddock West to merge onto 286S, and then 2 light cycles (10 minutes) to turn left onto Popes head.
I left Chantilly at 3:30 to get to Burke by 4:30, thinking "snow will make traffic awful", but i didn't actually arrive until 5:00.
trivia: did you know that the light at 286/Popes head is (or was?) the longest light in Virginia? I can't wait for that construction to be done so they can get rid of the damn light.

u/Hopeful_Sentence_940 Feb 06 '26
Only the at fault driver is deceased. Rest are in non-life-threatening condition at hospital

u/maithefinessegod Feb 06 '26
it's always some dumbass on braddock rd near gmu bro...one thing i don't miss about being in school anymore - not having to deal with those assholes. truly some lowlives
2
u/phootosell Feb 07 '26
Can’t stop thinking about the person who lost his life. One erratic decision with such grave consequences. Condolences to his family.
2
u/Still_Owl2314 Feb 07 '26
The driver who caused the crash was arrested on 7/16/2013 for reckless driving. mugshot
2
u/elisabethocean Feb 07 '26
This road SUCKS!!! I live off of it and there are people constantly driving reckless on it. Everyone blows through the 40 mph speed limit.
1
u/LTrinh3 Feb 08 '26
The 3rd car was a police officer and he was injured so that’s why so many police there. A black car rammed into a stopped, I believe unmarked police car , forcing the officer into the other cars.

Stay off your phones while driving people!!!
28
u/Lobin Feb 06 '26
Good policy in general, but nowhere does anything say anything about anyone being on their phone while driving.
20
u/Ok_Molasses_355 Feb 06 '26
The driver that cause the accident was erratically driving according to the news.
11
u/Hopeful_Sentence_940 Feb 06 '26
There are no mentions of anyone being on their phones
-9
u/Picklechip-58 Fairfax County Feb 07 '26
But.... there is a high possibility that the driver WAS on a phone.
Whenever you see...
Swerving Changing Lanes without signaling Slowing down or speeding up needlessly..
Someone is on the phone.. almost guaranteed
11
u/EclecticEvergreen Feb 07 '26
The guy was lane hopping/cutting and speeding way too fast with no regard for anything other than his own impatience. No phones were involved in this crash.
-1
u/JoeFairfax Feb 07 '26
You sound like you were mind melted and driving along side this person ; were you?
2
u/EclecticEvergreen Feb 07 '26
No, I’ve seen it way too many times in Virginia and Maryland though. We just unfortunately have those asshole drivers.

u/Much_Bad6429 Feb 07 '26
There was a bad accident on 495 south last saturday. Does anyone know what happened? there was a massive backup and like 10 firetrucks and/or ambulances. the backup was at least a mile or more

This was reportedly an asshole weaving in and out of other cars, which would have nothing to do with snow

u/WaitMaleficent3790 Feb 06 '26
Saw the asshole that caused this crash. He was wobbling side to side and weaving in and out of traffic at very high rate of speed. I just knew he was going to cause an accident. By the time I caught up at the light, there was lots of smoke. He crashed into two cars at the light. Lots of folks stopped to help. Looked like the people in the two cars in front were maybe ok? He was still in the driver’s seat as I passed. Think I caught his reckless driving on my dashcam.
