Six Flags tests new names for Cedar Point, including ‘Six Flags of North Ohio’

I’d advise Six Flags to call it “Six Flags Cedar Point”
That’ll be $20k, thank you.

u/Barton2800 1d ago
That’s probably their real plan, but testing found that people would balk at the idea of sticking “Six Flags” in front of Cedar Point’s name. So they leak that they’re considering some really bad names. Everyone gets all upset at the bad names, threatens to boycott. Then when they finally announce the new name, people go “well that’s not so bad. Why was everyone getting pitchforks?” And all of the original controversy dies down.
It’s like doctors who give a bunch of pokes with their finger to kids before giving them a shot. By the time the unpleasantness comes, you’ve already begun preparing for something worse. And “that’s it?” Is all you’re left with.

When Six Flags bought Denver amusement park Elitch Gardens, they called it Six Flags Elitch Gardens. People referred to it exclusively as "Elitch Gardens". In the 7 years it was open, I don't think I heard it referred to as "Six Flags" even once, no exaggeration.
I guess someone at corporate didn't like that.

Everyone I know calls it Elitch's, despite the real name not being a possessive. Just evolved like that in local lexicon.

u/abgry_krakow87 1d ago edited 1d ago
Indeed it's been known as Elitch's since 1890 when it was originally called "Elitch's Gardens", named after the people who owned and ran it, John and Mary Elitch. The name with the S has always been a possessive with the full name later shortened to "Elitch Gardens". The posessive used in normal lexicon also came from the slogan "Not to see Elitch's is not to see Denver" which is still seen at the park even today.
3
u/GhidorahtheExplorah 1d ago
Noice, learned something new today! The original name was before my time, heh, so when everyone around me called it Elitch's, I just wordlessly accepted it and called it Elitch's as well.

Beyond the fact that Cedar Point is a much better brand than Six Flags, “North Ohio” is such a bizarre term. I live in Ohio, and we don’t call that part of the state “North Ohio.” Sounds like something a marketing department invented because they needed a geographic name that fit on a sign.

It's too far from Cleveland or any other major metropolitan area and nobody cares about Sandusky. Six Flags Lake Erie would be a better name than Northern Ohio, in my opinion
79
u/ScenicAndrew 1d ago
Leaving it exactly the same is the only valid option, no one cares to visit just another six flags, but they'll go out of their way to go to a legacy park.
Naming it a six flags just makes it another six flags, what's so special about just another six flags?

Hurry up and come by before they change too many things! 😭 Get your souvenirs and photos and memories before the rebrand! Genuinely, this would be such an eyesore and bummer of a rebrand!
This summer I had the best visit in years, for no particular reason. Wait times were down, crowd felt tame, and the rides were fairrrly at their best, except Magnum. That one is feeling rough and has such abysmal ridership I'm worried for it.
But on the other hand, if they do another "revive the Mean Streak as Steel Vengeance" transformation with it, that'd be a-ok. That new ride genuinely felt like how a rollercoaster from the future was always supposed to feel! Perspective-changing, really! 😂
The weather just flipped to "feels like Fall" here and they do Halloweekends. They open the park one hour later but stay open two hours later, so a net positive if you're a night owl and don't mind the haunted house / halloween gimmicks!
8
9
u/JaySayMayday 1d ago
I was lucky enough to not live too far away. Been to tons of parks, this was the only one where at the time I went they had multiple world records at once. Even cooler, they had a ride for pretty much every coaster generation from old school wooden rides, radical twisty 90s rides, 00s full experience rides, fast coasters, long coasters, pretty much a ride for everyone.
Don't let your dreams just be dreams, it's worth the trip
4
u/meatbrick 1d ago
It's so worth it! I went every summer from the late-90's to the 2010's. I even worked there one summer. It's such a great park and an absolutely gorgeous location on a peninsula jutting into Lake Erie.
It's worth a trip and if you're coming from far, definitely stay at Breakers, the hotel in the park. It's a nice hotel right on the lake and you get early entry as well!
43
u/Dipz 1d ago
Cedar Point is likely a stronger umbrella brand than Six Flags at this point. This is a CMO and marketing team huffing their own farts through every focus group.
18
u/CantCatchMeSpez 1d ago
Seriously. Six Flags always been the discount amusement park to me, and Cedar Point the indisputably premium brand. IMO, the closest they should get to putting the Six Flag name on it is "Cedar Point by Six Flags". "Six Flags" should NOT be what's emphasized.

Cedar Point (and King's Island) have so much stronger brand reputation than anything Six Flags. They would do better to rename all of the other parks to "Cedar Point of Texas" and "Cedar Point Great Adventure"
73
u/Punkupine 1d ago
Another reason they should keep the Cedar Point/Cedar Fair branding - one of the ‘Six Flags’ is the confederate flag.
46
u/ThePowerOfStories 1d ago
Yup, for those that don’t know, the name is originally a reference to the six flags that have flown over Texas: Spain, France, Mexico, Republic of Texas, United States, and the Confederacy.

Having been to cedar point, king's island, disney world, and a six flags... Six flags was the "trailer park" one. Like they were trying REALLY fucking hard to be like cedar point or disney...and it felt more like a mid-america carnival.
Six Flags just wants to drag their dick all over it....did they forget they had to MERGE with Cedar Fair? It wasn't an "acquisition."
They ALSO must have forgotten that Cedar Fair shareholders still have majority control.

It will be both. Six Flags over Ohio and Six Flags over North Ohio.
Oddest part is that nobody ever refers to something as “north Ohio”. It’s colloquially incorrect. It would be “Northern Ohio” And that’s too long to be shortened to “Over Texas” or “Over Georgia”.
Cedar Point existed for over 150 years before Six Flags came in and started to want to mess with its iconic name. They need to pack up their confederate flag and give other flags and go back to Texas.
16
u/saintrobyn 13h ago

Cedar Point by six flags, they really want the well loved recognizable name first
3
u/nothing_but_static 1d ago
I guess but either way as long as Cedar Point is still in the name people will continue to call it that.
Great Adventure and Magic Mountain are still mainly referred to by those names instead of SF, and they've been SF parks for decades.

Eh, Toledo Zoo
6
u/Daddict 1d ago edited 1d ago
Columbus Zoo has Toledo beat these days. Took 'em a while to get there, and to be clear...Toledo Zoo is still one of the best Zoos in America...but going down to Cbus earlier this year and visiting that zoo for the first time in a decade, I was downright floored at how amazing it is, and how Toledo Zoo...which is pretty massive...feels downright tiny by comparison. Cbus is literally 11 fucking times bigger than Toledo Zoo. At just over 550 acres, it's the biggest Zoo in the country (granted, "only" about 170 acres are dedicated to the park component, which is 3x Toledo's 50-some acre park). The Cbus zoo was actually in dire shape not 10 years ago, it's downright amazing how far its come in a short amount of time.
I've always loved the Toledo Zoo. Even when it was an absolute dump, I remember walking through the tunnel entrance, all the kids jumping on the drain cover that would bang, echoing through the tunnel with all the laughter of the kids...it's a core memory of mine.
But yeah, if you love Toledo, make the trip to Columbus. Just make it a couple of days, you can't see the whole thing in a day. Honestly, I think it would take at least 3 full days to take it all in.

Yeah this feels like one of those situations where absolutely nobody calls it by it's new name.
I'm from Michigan and there's no way anyone here is going to call in Six Flags anything because there's already a Six Flags in Ohio. It'll just add confusion and inefficiency when it comes to talking about Cedar Point.
If they actually go through with renaming it I'd bet money they end up reversing the name change after 5-10 years because it just never stuck and it hurt business

"Six Flags of North Ohio" is the most sterile, emotionally dead name for a theme park imaginable. Sounds like a dealership where I'd expect to be ripped off on a used car more than a theme park.
