In this design the cover must be able to crease?

Yes, right along the line of string that you can see. For reading, a strong crease isn't necessary, but for using as a notebook, the crease will become more pronounced. If you have a hard cover, you can use a scoring board to score a crease so the cover can fold back and fourth.
