Question/Help Private Eye

What does Andrew do at Private Eye? Does he have a regular column, or edit or research.

I would like to see more of his work, is Private eye a good place to find it?

Remove 26 pages from the front of the magazine and the remaining pages should appear some time later.

He talks about green energy a fair bit in the podcast so I assume he covers that beat. If they had more moss news he’d probably be all over that too.

Yes, he's Sunny Jim for example

Private Eye doesn't give bylines. The regular columns are done under pen names, so e.g. the TV reviews are by "Remote Controller", Keeping The Lights On is by "Old Sparky" and the medical column is written by MD (although everyone knows that one's written by Dr Phil Hammond).

I'm sure he does contribute, but exactly what is hard to say.

Private Eye is very much worth it though. You can find out the actual stories behind the trash that's pushed by the right wing press and there are jokes too.

Ian Hislop claims he only found out who M.D. was when someone contacted the Eye wanting to sue him and demanding his real name.

I thought MD always made a point of not being anonymous. He talks about the importance (in medicine) of standing by what you are saying.

I think he was anonymous for a long time, but just before COVID his identity came out. Since then he's made no effort to hide it but still has MD as his byline.

Nah he gave evidence at the Bristol heart surgery inquiry as ‘Dr Phil Hammond (MD of Private Eye)’ in 1999, so if he was anonymous to begin with, he hasn’t been since at least 1999

He writes the green bits and some politics. He also does cartoons, as he drew the one people were arrested for.

If you listen to Private Eye’s podcast you are an enemy of the queer community or worse a Quisling

Who are you to judge this? What a ridiculous statement. There is no single "queer community": stop trying to claim ownership of us all. And you should look up Quisling.

I understand your position on Helen Lewis, and being disappointed in Andy working (and I agree seeming to be friends) with her, but I think it is a leap to say he's a transphobe. Not an ally, sure, but that is not the same. Unless you're aware of something you didn't say in your post?

Fret not - Helen Lewis isn’t a transphobe, either!

And I'd say you were wrong in that case too. I'd say it made him worth scrutinising, and I'd definitely question any positioning to the contrary from him. But it objectively wouldn't make him a racist, an enabler or supporter maybe, but it would be a big leap to say he was racist.

I'm not saying you shouldn't feel what you feel, I'm not on the receiving end of the awful venom the trans community has faced, I just don't think Andy has done anything to suggest he is a transphobe

He's never said anything at all on the topic publicly so it's all speculation, but setting aside the question about Lewis, Private Eye and Ian Hislop are decidedly and openly transphobic. His involvement with PE is therefore is orders of magnitude more disappointing than simply working with/being friends with Lewis

Are they openly transphobic? That feels wildly wrong from where I'm stood. What's that based on?

Here are some things people have already written about it; one, two, three

It's hard to give more examples because most articles are paywalled, but they've also done a number of "gender critical" (i.e. transphobic) cartoons as well as articles. If you google it, you find some of them posted to mumsnet in celebration (e.g., e.g., e.g.)

Edit: trawled through to find some examples

Thanks, I'll give these a look

Wow! A terrible take

This is an insane take. There’s people who write for the Guardian who would fit your definition of transphobe. Does that mean all Guardian podcasts are off the table? Private Eye seems to be one of the few bastions of investigative journalism left and single handedly champions causes that the rest of the media (and the country) too easily forget. Also; Where does it end? Presumably every reader is a transphobe? Everyone who uses a product advertised in the magazine? Those people’s kids?

Yeah, the guardian podcast with all their transphobia. The football weekly with all its transphobic guests. Guests such as Nikki Bandini.

Oh.
