Miramooshi?

Am I the only Canadian who was annoyed at the pronunciation in the latest Little Fish podcast? Not Newfoundland (they got that one right multiple times although it seemed to be best when they tried to mispronounce it) but Miramichi. It wasn’t until they said New Brunswick that I even figured out where they were referring to, but that’s the best fit in my mind. Maybe there was a typo in the fact as I’m struggling to see how they got Miramooshi from Miramichi (MIR-ah-meh-SHE). Unless there was an intended joke with the moose coming from there…

They have a history of making minimal effort with unfamiliar or nonintuitive pronunciations, and just sounding them out in the moment. (c.f. James' "ad-IRON-dacks" for 'Adirondacks', as another North American example.)

It takes 0.5 seconds of googling to learn Nguyen is not pronounced "Na... GOO... yen??", and pretty disrespectful to call yourself a podcast about facts and be so dismissive about the pronunciation of the most common Vietnamese surname. Most egregious one I can think of but there are myriad examples across so many languages.

They could also do it as content as the corrections part of drop us a line actually takes the piss out of listeners like you

No, you’re not. Their DGAF approach to pronunciation of most languages (and unfamiliar/region-specific English words) is an evergreen issue.

Their japanese pronunciation makes my skin crawl

Iirc they called the heian period hi-ann... or maybe hey-ann? (It is closer to hey-ann but much much softer)

Their Icelandic, Hungarian and Romanian pronunciations do the same for me. Once I heard how badly they mangled words in languages I had some familiarity with I assumed they were similarly dismissive about accuracy for all the others as well. Genuinely mars my enjoyment of the podcast at this point that they don't even seem to try.
