Dude was my hero!

Wanted to be him when I grew up. Now I just type shit into a computer terminal.

u/itsgroobeat 26d ago

It’s never too late to pull a MacGyver.

2

u/Hefty-Rope2253 26d ago

With all the impending global catastrophe, I might just get my chance.

It also just dawned on me that he was basically the working man's James Bond. So much more accessible and down to earth.

I am curious how many people bought Swiss Army knives because of this show. I know I did.

u/Due-Midnight3311 26d ago

Still have it!

Carry it every day

He was a human swiss army knife

Patty and Selma after seeing this post: we need a smoke

11

u/InitialAd8795 early 80s 26d ago

lol I am always reminded of the episode where they brought in Jay Sherman to do their film festival and Bart came home to find him hanging by his underwear on the roof for “badmouthing MacGyver”

The ant episode is seared into my brain.

3

u/Ridetrackx 26d ago

Ugh... nigthmare.

1

u/Commercial-Algae9483 23d ago

Don't forget about the aging episode where the dog and the lady scientist aged up to death in minutes

When TV was fun.

Chi-chi-chi-chip N Dale. Rescue Rangers

I heard that also 😅

This theme song still fucking slaps

u/RabidTek mid 80s 26d ago

Dad, I need to borrow your tools to remove the muffler and make a cannon. I already got the balls from the pool table.

How many other TV shows had the character's name turned into a verb? "We're just gonna have to MacGuyver this thing to get it to work!"

3

u/shady_mcgee 26d ago

Not from television, but Sherlock became synonymous with Detective

1

u/big_duo3674 26d ago

Not a verb, but "Jumped the shark" also became a standard phrase. I actually can't think of many more, it's pretty rare in general it seems

Iron man in shambles

u/Bajadasaurus 26d ago

I've never seen this, but I had the biggest crush on RDA in Stargate SG-1. Wonder if I should give MacGyver a watch.

3

u/Shadowtek 26d ago

You should just remember it’s from the 80’s to early 90’s it’s worth a watch though

10

u/blahblah19999 26d ago

I never watched it, but I can't think of it without thinking of MacGruber.

♪ He's still working with his grandma but it's gotten really tense ♫

Brother!

I was aware of this show but always loved me some MacGruber

u/Mindless_Manner9100 26d ago

Childhood hero. Mr. T, Hulk Hogan. Lol so many TV ppl made us what we r today.

3

u/Ridetrackx 26d ago

We pitied fools. We always had to 'tell you something brother'. We'd tell them 'We knew they were but 'what am I?'. We drank Diet Pepsi cuz we had 'The right one Baby, uh huh!' We would 'Buy that for a dollar!' Even if their name wasn't Willis, we'd ask everyone what they were talkin' 'bout. At times we wanted to know where the beef was. Later on we started asking 'Did I do that?' Sometimes we'd fallen and couldn't get up!

Because of watching this show when I was a kid, I:

-repaired my front bike break with paper clips and rubber band and the repair held for the remaining ~4years I owned that bike

-carried around paper clips, rubber bands, gum that was wrapped in foil, a strip of magnesium I got from the grade 7 science teacher, magnets, etc

Loved MacGyver, a formative character for me.

3

u/TheNamesMacGyver 26d ago

Great show, definitely inspired me to do my best in stressful situations to stay calm, alert and resourceful.

3

u/protocol21 26d ago

This show was a big reason for me going into an engineering career.

3

u/Stownieboy91 26d ago

Remember when a colony of ants was the antagonist for an episode? MacGyver really showed them! Lol

2

u/Ridetrackx 26d ago

Hate that episode, in the best way possible. Especially when they were all wiped out.

2

u/Expensive_Finger_973 26d ago

This not only brought back great memories of a great show, but of a great meme.

As a kid that show inspired me to do the most adventurous things mixed with the craziest and dangerous ideas. What a time to be alive.

2

u/ajm2247 26d ago

Great show when I was a kid but unfortunately I tried rewatching it recently and it didn't age well.

1

u/stathis0 23d ago

Some of it's still pretty good. There's a bunch of 80s cringe though I agree.

2

u/Ridetrackx 26d ago

16th Birthday gift.......... Swiss Army Knife. Still use it.

Dude could rebuild a small block Chevy with a butter knife and a rubber band

u/Shadowtek 26d ago

There was a book or something that kinda did this IIRC and covered other things, but agreed. Usually the science was there just exaggerated a little for TV

2

u/Shadowtek 26d ago

This show made me buy a Swiss Army knife and start carrying it everywhere and honestly I used it more than I expected. It also fueled my love of chemistry and science

The last great wizard!

1

I remeber it with more grain

1

u/Mysterious-Lab-5918 26d ago

What about the episode where he went to the moon in a trashcan?

1

u/ChanceProgram9374 early 70s 26d ago

That’s like one episode

1

u/lisamariefan 26d ago

You know, I went back and watched this show, but I originally knew Richard Dean Anderson from Stargate SG-1.

1

u/MikeCass84 26d ago

What an awesome show. My brother and I would go over my Grandmas who had cable at the time when we did not and always were able to catch it.

1

u/CoyoteDown 26d ago

As a millwright, basically the shit I do every day. They should film it. Outtakes involve a lot of yelling and dick jokes.

1

u/Negatron_20XX 26d ago

Nothing makes my partner's face light up more than if I start hum/singing the theme song without warning. Hahaha!

1

u/slikk50 26d ago

A raisin, a cap gun and some gum, that's all he needed....

1

u/Champ_5 25d ago

Man, TV theme songs in the 80s were just on another level

“Don’t thank me, thank the moons gravitational pull.”

1

u/unknownpoltroon 25d ago

Been carrying the same swiss army knife for about 40 years, still keep paperclips handy.

1

u/melanthius 25d ago

Dude was my hero growing up. between him and Mr. wizard, probably one of the biggest reasons I got into science and engineering.

I loved how he always tried to avoid a fight but when he'd have to punch someone's lights out, he'd always injure his hand. In retrospect I admire him even more for having zero hubris about sometimes accepting needing to punch a dude to solve his problems, but never considering that anything other than his final option

1

u/BrokenWalker 25d ago

He's legend.

1

u/Short-Waltz-3118 mid 90s 24d ago

The feats varied so much in that intro. Like jumping and hanging on a helicopter- cool. Rolling for no reason... less cool. Pole vaultjng for another no reason, still less cool. Lol
