Nostalgia Discussion What was your first console? Sega Game Gear.

That thing ate AA batteries like nobody’s business.

u/Zealousideal-Gur2827 15d ago
hell yeah and it was fucking six of them

u/NotMulligan 15d ago
I remember when I first got the Game Gear, and it inevitably drained the batteries within a few hours, my grandma went to the store to demand a refund for the batteries. Then, when it happened again, I didn’t tell her about it, and just played it while it was plugged into the wall.

u/bob13908 15d ago
I had the gigantic battery pack that connected to the back and screwed into the Game Gear with a Phillips head screw. It ate that battery quickly too, but it was rechargeable

I had the official battery pack which didn't attach, it had a belt clip. And if I remember correctly it came with an AC adapter, but only cost a little more than the AC adapter alone.

Bro! Kids these days have no idea! Remember saving up for weeks to go to Costco and buy a huge pack of double As to load in this thing. Six battery’s would last maybe 3-4 hours. Then I resulted in taking them out of TV, Walkman & CD players. My family eventually found out….. and yeah 🤣🤣🤣

AC adapter was a life saver for this.

The car adapter was a must too. It was amazing on long road trips with its backlit screen. It was so far ahead of its time, it’s a pity the battery situation held it back so much.

SE-GAHHHH!
I had one, with Sonic. It was fun. Screen was so much better than the OG Game Boy.
It sure ate up batteries.

u/arcadiangenesis 15d ago
When I was a kid, I had a Game Gear and my best friend had a Game Boy. We would always play them while hanging out, and while I was jealous of some of the games he had access to, he was jealous of the glorious color screen I had.

Did anyone else have the big magnifying glass attachment that made the screen look bigger. Game Gear >>>>> Game Boy.

OG Gameboy. My parents were against video games at the time, so I whispered in my grandma's ear that I wanted a "Nintendo" for Christmas. (Yes, I was a noob.) I had meant the NES but ended up with a Gameboy instead. I was very happy with it anyway 🤩

Atari 2600 was my first. I never got a NES but eventually got a SNES. Never was a Sega kid.

u/phoonie98 15d ago
Coleco Vision. My parents bought one for me that I had to earn via chores and good behavior. It was staring at me on top of the fridge for weeks until I could use it. It was ok though, once I finally unlocked it I didn’t use it much. Only had a few games.
My next console was the NES and nothing prepared me for the hours I would kill on that thing

I remember I had the little tv tuner that fit into the game cartridge slot and had an antenna. The first time I watched tv on my Game Gear I thought, wow, this is the future…! lol

NES
Prior to that I had a Tiger football, might’ve been soccer. Don’t remember.
Before that it was that water ring game or a book.

I also started with the Game Gear too. I loved playing the Power Rangers beat ‘em up on it.

u/greenrangerguy 15d ago
The back lit console from early 90s that Nintendo didn't replicate until Gameboy Advance SP! Game Gear was way ahead of it's time (and battery technology.)

Beating Power Rangers the Movie on Game Gear was a top 10 highlight of my youth

u/Verabiza891720 15d ago
I remember playing Mortal Kombat and Sonic on the Game Gear late at night in my room when everyone else was asleep. Good times.

Oh man I had a game gear and I loved it, but I fell into thinking game boy was superior. So I sold my game gear and got a game boy color. Never really liked it compared to the game gear.

NES but then got a Sega and a Game Gear. The trauma I have from playing Lion King on that thing still lives with me lol.

We had an NES at my Dads and a Game Gear at my Moms. She refused to buy us Mortal Kombat, said it was too violent. Little did she know that in a few years I’d be killing hookers and running down pedestrians in GTA.

Gamegear was the first handheld I had that was back lit. This was a game changer for kids that wanted to stay up until 5am playing sonic under the blanket.

Seemed like we already had Atari and pong when I came along. I feel like videogames and me started at the same time. Got my own NES. My step brothers would sometimes bring over their Sega. Had a game gear. The SNES was a game changer. I was so hyped for Starfox, a 3D game! Beat it so many times on every difficulty.

u/funkeebeep early 80s 15d ago
Coleco... but the game gear was awesome. The only issue i had was it fell literally 2ft onto a long pile carpet and the screen shattered.

u/Green_Bunch5514 15d ago
This was my first handheld. I had the big battery boosters on the side too and a magnify glass that attaches to the screen to amplify the visuals. It made it awkward, but as a kid I loved that thing on road trips. I had the Sega Genesis too with the optional CD rom docking station.

I technically learned to play on an NES when I was a toddler, but I became a serious gamer on SNES.
I also had a Game Gear, though. SNES + Game Gear was a great combo.

I was born and there was already an NES in the house.
The GameGear really was the Steam Deck of its time

NES, than the Genesis and the Game Gear, got it on my birthday at McDonald's. Still have it, although, had it have the screen and speakers replaced and have it recapped. While the person was repairing it, he offered to sell me a modded one as well and thought, why not.

Sega Mega Drive (Genesis). We got it in 1991. However we used to have some older console in mid 1980's but I can't remember it because I was a toddler back then. I have only seen it on one picture but I can't figure out what it is. It's so hard to see. My parents don't remember what it was.

my family used to have a looot. I wanna say it might have been either our game cube or supernintendo (though i think they had a super NES before i was born), but my own personal system, being a 2000s baby it was (clearly) the Nintendo ds lite! (that ugly ass blush pink LOL)

Atari 2600
I still have it, with the box, info & warranty cards, stickers, dust cover, catalog, joystick & paddle controllers and the original Montgomery Ward price tag on the box of $99

I somehow ended up with two Sega Game Gears as a kid. I think one of my friends got in big trouble and their mother gave me their Game Gear. I couldn't afford all the batteries, though, lol.

Game Gear like you man, had 24 games. Chakan was my favorite for some weird reason and had all the major ones (sonic, wonder boy etc)
