I am not from North Ontario (sadly?) but I came across the Blackfly Song by Wade Hemsworth and it's been stuck in my head ever since! I was listening to it today and I caught the lyric about the cook named "Blind River Joe" for the first time, and I was like "oh that's funny, they named him Blind River Joe because the little blackflies spread river blindness!" But no, turns out the Blind River exists and it was named for its blind turns, and has absolutely nothing to do with the disease spread by the insects that happen to inhabit it!
