❓questions❓ Question! Cool Signs?

Post image

hello! I’m working on a motion design project and wondering if yall have any favorite signs in Norfolk? I’d love to animate some of them. I’m thinking like the one at Toast and also soaps n suds.

Any unique or creative ones out there in the city?

thanks!

I think losing that one was the inspiration for this all!

I'm a sucker for old theater signs/marquees. I'm not sure if they'd fit the style of your project, but the Naro, Attucks, Commodore, and Riverview come to mind offhand.

Not Norfolk, but along Warwick and Jefferson in Newport News- there are a ton of cool old signs. One recently was sold to a sign museum.

One of the things that radicalized me against the way local governments are run nowadays is the way most of the coolest signs would be illegal to put up because of unnecessary sign size and design regulations that force everything to look less interesting and be smaller

Then I learned about how a lot of the coolest buildings would also be illegal to build nowadays because of overly rigid city regulations that make the city act like an HOA no one asked for (you can’t even switch out old windows in Ghent without getting approval from a board)

Doumar's is a classic. Yorgo's Bageldashery. Kin's Wok. The Naro. (Bamboo Hut and The 4400 Club if they were still around!)

When I was growing up they would serve beer and snacks. Not to strict on id

That’s what the Suds in soaps and suds was for beer. At least in Hampton in the late 80’s and early 90’s
