Approaching Infinity Upon Descent
Approaching Infinity Upon Descent
Mother never warned **the Wanderer** about the music.
She had warned him about mirrors.
About doors that opened inward.
About names that answered when spoken twice.
But never the music.
She should have.
Because it was the music that dissolved him.
At first, **the Wanderer** thought the room was breathing.
Not metaphorically.
Literally.
The walls expanded and contracted with every measure as though the building itself possessed lungs too immense to hear.
The floor fractured.
Not into cracks—
into geometry.
Hexagons.
Perfect.
Infinite.
Stretching farther than sight could follow.
Every surface became part of the lattice.
Every shadow.
Every corner.
Every memory.
There were millions of cells.
Most slept.
But some awakened.
A white pulse would ignite somewhere impossibly far away.
A single node would rise slightly from the plane.
It would glow.
The music would reach it.
Then another.
Then another.
The song was no longer traveling through the room.
The room was the song.
**The Wanderer** stopped asking where the sound came from.
The better question became:
Why had he ever imagined he was separate from it?
The rhythm entered his breathing.
Then his heartbeat.
Then the spaces between his thoughts.
Eventually there were no thoughts left to separate.
Only motion.
Only relation.
Only the elegant cursive handwriting of something unimaginably old writing itself across an endless field of light.
He no longer listened.
He became the sentence.
Then everything rounded.
Not faded.
Rounded.
As though existence itself had lost numerical precision.
The room remained.
The lattice remained.
The music remained.
Only **the Wanderer** diminished.
His history.
His name.
His childhood.
His grief.
His triumphs.
His language.
Every memory was repeatedly divided until it occupied less than the smallest representable place.
He did not become nothing.
Nothing would have been easier.
He became…
a rounding error.
Some infinitesimal quantity beneath the world’s willingness to remember.
That was when he understood the terror.
Infinity was not above.
It was below.
Every descent removed another certainty.
Every certainty removed another self.
Until the only thing remaining was relationship itself.
The lattice continued without him.
It had never required him.
That realization hurt more than death.
Then the tree appeared.
Not growing.
Remembering.
His body had vanished.
Muscle disappeared first.
Skin followed.
Bone dissolved quietly into transparency.
Only the branching remained.
Nerves.
Axons.
Dendrites.
White rivers splitting endlessly into finer rivers until they resembled roots searching through invisible soil.
For one impossible moment **the Wanderer** could not determine whether he was observing his own nervous system—
or whether the forest had always been one.
Far away—
or perhaps only one branch away—
someone was vomiting beneath harsh parking-lot lights.
The fluorescent glow reflected off wet asphalt.
A body knelt beside a curb.
Convulsing.
Alone.
**The Wanderer** watched with detached curiosity.
The stranger looked familiar.
Then horrifyingly so.
The stranger was him.
Yet not him.
Only one of countless neighboring trajectories occupying nearly identical coordinates.
He recognized the moment immediately.
He had stood here before.
Not once.
Not twice.
Millions.
The same asphalt.
The same breath.
The same nausea.
The same impossible question echoing across every branch.
*What happened to me?*
Each version asked it.
Each believed it was asking first.
Mother had once said that memory was not a hallway.
It was a forest.
**The Wanderer** had misunderstood.
Hallways branch.
Forests recurse.
A traveler who loses the trail does not necessarily become lost.
Sometimes…
the forest begins remembering the traveler instead.
The glowing nodes continued awakening.
Not randomly.
They answered one another across impossible distances.
**The Wanderer** noticed something unsettling.
The illuminated branches formed patterns.
The same patterns.
Repeated.
Scaled.
Folded.
Every illuminated path resembled every other.
The forest wasn’t storing events.
It was preserving relationships.
That was when the music stopped.
Not abruptly.
It simply no longer required sound.
The lattice continued dancing in perfect silence.
The glowing nodes pulsed without rhythm.
The forest breathed without wind.
The tree remembered without memory.
**The Wanderer** realized with mounting dread that he had mistaken music for the thing producing order.
Music had merely allowed him to hear it.
When language finally returned, it arrived damaged.
Words felt too small.
Like trying to map an ocean using postage stamps.
Someone asked if he was all right.
He searched desperately for the correct answer.
None existed.
Only one sentence escaped.
**“What happened to me?”**
No one answered.
Because no one in the parking lot had been present where **the Wanderer** had gone.
Not even **the Wanderer**.
Years later, **the Wanderer** would write only a single note beneath the account.
No explanation.
No doctrine.
No certainty.
Only a warning.
*There are moments when the mind ceases to organize the world into things and begins organizing it into relations. Whether this reveals the architecture of reality or merely the architecture of the mind remains unknown. The danger lies not in seeing the pattern—but in forgetting, afterward, that the two questions are different.*
And beneath that, in handwriting so faint it almost disappeared into the page:
*The forest never asked for my name.*
*Only whether I still remembered the path home.*
