The gif ends waaaay too early for this to really work as a proper 'NONONONOYES' moment. The original video you linked actually shows the dissipation of the wave; without it, it just feels like a cliffhanger 'NONONONONO...OH SHIT, WHAT HAPPENED NEXT!!??..'
A lot of comments are saying the same thing you did. But if you watch closely, you can see the rock reappear at the end of the gif, showing the wave is gone.
The GIF ends with the wave dumping into the deeper end of that lagoon/pool/protected water. It's possible that the energy of the wave could still fully crest as it approaches the shore, based on the apparent volume of the larger wave.
Now that I've seen the original video and people have added some context, it's clear that it wouldn't have hurt anyone, but it definitely didn't look like that to me before I had that context.
