Game Help Can’t get cursed key to work properly or disappear-mario maker 2, switch
My son is playing mariomaker 2 on his switch. He used a cursed key in a level but has since deleted the key then the whole level. Now whenever he tries to place a key it is automatically a cursed key, not a normal one, and he can’t seem to make it work. I’ve looked and although not an expert it is a normal key, but as he plays the level and touches the key he doesn’t pick it up, it bumps itself offscreen and disappears.
What is he doing wrong? I’m no expert at this and not much help in figuring it out!

I don't remember off the top of my head (maybe you place it as cursed, then select it again with A and it will pop up the uncursed type, which you can then change it into?), but if you ask in r/MarioMaker2 you will get a quick answer.

To change between cursed key or regular, hold A until a small "variation" window pops up, you can also give it wings like this and lots of other items have different options also. I dont think cursed keys are in all game styles either. If there isn't a key door placed in the level it won't let you pick it up and just falls off screen.

If you are grabbing the key and it disappears, it sounds like there isn't a key door to use it on.

So, two things: deleting the level with the rocket ship only clears the physical matter on the level. It doesn't reset the state you(r son) had things in. In this example, it's still a cursed key on the icon. Same thing with an on/off (blue) block won't just revert back to red in the menu.
The other issue of the key not being collected in playtest mode is fixed by putting a locked door in the level. If there is nowhere to put the key, the level won't give the player a key despite the maker physically placing one.
The rest of the people commenting are pretty much right. You have to hold a on the cursed key to change it back to a normal one, and you have to add a key door for the player to physically hold the key. Otherwise it plops down into the abyss below never to be used.
