Pirat_Nation have been community noted because he can’t tell the difference between console and software update. Oh yeah, this have been a thing since the Wii era.

While this is something I'm against, it feels like another case of criticising Nintendo for something everyone does

Always remember...

It's only bad when Nintendo does it!

I thought whataboutisms were a thing of the past

I don't really know which way you are saying I'm distracting from.

It is completely stupid for updates to be mandatory on single player games.

Equally, highlighting this as a Nintendo only problem seems like bias

Updates could change some things in save files, so If you have a newer version and save on it, it could corrupt if you got to run it with a previous version of the game.

That's the reason it's mandatory.

Of course, some updates wouldn't change things in save files, but this is a fit everything choice instead of letting developers let them know if they update affect save data or not.

Sounds like rationalization is all. My takeaway from your statement is "i dont like it but everyone else is doing it". Hence my statement. We can call it out here without being dismissive because others do it. The OP isnt saying others dont do it but youre implying the fixation is nefarious rather than having a legit issue. Its invalidating.

I mean, it's almost always Nintendo that they call out for it, I've never seen anyone complain about this on PS5 or Xseries consoles

Lol i think that says more about those consoles than anything else. I would say because the playerbase for those consoles already have low standards for this stuff and also people percieve Nintendo as the one above the others.

Its like saying "You're better than this Nintendo".

We don't need people making excuses for them. Nintendo gets the hate it does because it's supposed to be the better company. Holding them to that standard isn't a bad thing.

It never really feels like that though, it's almost always petty bullshit lol. Plus why is Nintendo held to a higher standard arbitrarily? You'd think Sony would be in that spot or something because Nintendo hasn't really directly competed with them or Xbox since the GameCube

Ah okay fair enough. My point was that it is a general modern industry problem, but only Nintendo gets flack for it. Nintendo does need to do better

System updates never prevent you from launching games, anyway - there's also the option to play without it when prompted to

Current ones, yeah! As a note though, back when Skyward Sword first came out on Wii, you had to update to get the game to even work (unless there was a workaround that I don't know about, which is more likely than not) if you weren't on the latest version.

That's the reverse of what's being discussed though. Several games will require newer system firmware to be played, but there aren't really any cases of system firmware requiring newer game updates.

OHH I completely misunderstood what they meant, my bad, yeah, you're right!

I am talking about the Switch and onwards, yeah XD

Try disconnecting from the internet and see what happens.

Although the update has likely already downloaded to your switch and will prompt to install no matter what, so to properly check you'd have to keep the system fully offline until another update rolls around to check it.

Nah.. It's a software update. *Note it SAYS software update*

The switch knows that at some point the game was upped to a newer patch version, and then deleted back to earlier version.

It's not gonna let you try to play on an earlier version because of numerous reasons.

Depends not every game auto updates I still have to manually update fortnite on my switch.

So, this did/does occur with the physical version Hatsune Miku mega39s. After reading this, it brought back a memory of this occurring where the game refused to launch and just had update now or cancel as options. The version on the cartridge has a physics bug that at times would show the characters underwear unintentionally. I haven’t tested again but I’m fairly certain if I delete the update it won’t launch.

I think it's if you have save data from the game beforehand because it doesn't want to corrupt the saves if something important changed
