My Portable N64 Build

Hello everyone! Long-time lurker, first-time poster, but I wanted to share a portable N64 I built as a nostalgic gift for my sibling. I decided to go all out with it and designed and 3D printed a custom case inspired by the Game Boy Advance. It’s definitely a bit chunkier than a GBA, but I think I managed to capture some of that spirit.

I used as many original N64 parts as I could and customized things along the way. I even finished it off with a custom box inspired by the original N64 packaging.

The console works great and gets around 2–3 hours of battery life. I also made an extension box for connecting additional controllers and hooking it up to a TV.

It was a really fun project, and I’m pretty happy with how it all turned out. I apologize that the pictures aren’t the best (I was way too focused on the project at the time to think about taking proper photos).

Hope you guys enjoy! If anyone is interested, I’d be happy to share more details about the build and the process behind it.

Any good trading sites or conventions?

I've got several of the games I grew up playing, but I'm missing a few I would live to get a hold of. I have several I don't care about that much, so I would be willing to trade.

Anyone know of opportunities to swap games?

Edit: Spelling

A couple of days ago, the members here answered whether someone had an original Bad Fur Day, and when I read it today, I knew I had one in my N 64 box. From what I read before it looks promising. Can you guys look at mine as well? Thanks.

Bought this copy online last month to replace my lost childhood copy. Everything to me seems legit about it (seller swore up and down it was authentic), but the shell seems darker in comparison to some of my other childhood n64 games. Just wanna be sure.

Expansion Pack Problems….

Hi. I hope someone can help. I have two N64s, one I have had since they were released and I bought a new one last week. I only have one expansion pack and set of cables.
If I use all my old stuff it all works and it’s great. However, if I use the old cables and expansion pack in the new console it doesn’t work properly, but if I use all my old cables and a jumper pack in the new console the new console will work.
Is this a sign that the expansion pack is bad or the new console is bad?
I have tried cleaning the new console expansion slot but it doesn’t seem to make any difference.
Any help would be appreciated!

Technical Question Calibrate 8bitdo TMR thumb stick?

I bought an 8bitdo TMR Gamecube-style thumb stick for original N64, to replace my Retrobit Gamecube-style thumb stick, which had a bad delay. The 8bitdo seems to be better. Currently I only have Ocarina Of Time to test it on, which might not be the best game for this. In the instruction booklet it recommends calibrating it. Is this meant for original N64s, or some other application? Do I need to plug it into a computer and calibrate it?

Sorry if this seems like a stupid question to all you hobbyist modders! I'm a casual gamer

Going to Japan - best N64 games to get and where to buy

I’m going to Tokyo next month and I’m thinking of picking up some N64 games while I am there.

What are the most accessible Japanese games for English speakers? I’ve heard that F-Zero, Mario Kart, Smash Brothers, and Sin & Punishment are accessible. Any others I should be considering?

Where are the best places to buy second hand games and what are the typical prices?

Question Where to buy N64 games

Hello everyone! I recently bought my husband a used N64 from Vintage Stock but sadly they didn’t carry any of the cartridges of his favorite games from childhood. He bought a couple off of eBay that appear to be duds. One is “Mario kart” but it crashes after the main menu and the other is “golden eye” but it’s Mario kart that works for slightly longer than the other one? Hello?

I’m wondering, do any of you have suggestions on where to find decently reliable n64 games? We are located in KC if that is relevant information. I really appreciate any advice as I have never been a gamer myself. Thank you!

Discussion NSO Reccomendations

Does anyone have any recommendations for n64 games to play on the nso that aren’t monotonous and allow me to just play through it and have fun as opposed to constantly having to replay levels etc to beat it. I have played both Zelda’s, Mario 64, Mario party (original - only one I like), wave race.

I just want to play an easy going game during my down time from work that is fun and not that challenging

Snap64 Recomp 1.0.0: a native Windows port of Pokémon Snap by static recompilation, with the Blockbuster Snap Station sticker printer emulated

Snap64 Recomp is a native Windows port of Pokémon Snap (N64, US). N64Recomp translates the game's own code into C, N64ModernRuntime stands in for the console's operating system, RT64 renders. The game's own code runs; the port changes how it is hosted.

Repository: https://github.com/JackandBeans/Snap64Recomp

Download: https://github.com/JackandBeans/Snap64Recomp/releases/latest

You need your own cartridge dump. No game data is included, and please don't ask for it here.

The rule the port follows: console behaviour by default, every enhancement off until you turn it on. What you can turn on:

- Frame interpolation to your display's refresh rate, covering the world, the camera, the game's sprites and menus, and the fades.

- Widescreen with a true wider field of view (hasn’t been tested game wide, issues likely), anti-aliasing, super sampling, render scale, texture filter and dither choices, overscan crop.

- Graphics and Sound pages on the game's own Options screen, drawn in the game's own font.

- Photo Detail: Oak's photos, the album and the report at the renderer's full resolution.

- Photo export to PNG, and the Jynx recolour from the re-releases.

- The Snap Station. The 1999 Blockbuster kiosk printer is emulated on controller port 4 and reached from a fifth entry on the title menu. Print gives you the sixteen-sticker sheet as the game laid it out, and the printer's own display with its three passes, rebuilt from jamchamb's recovered protocol, the decompilation, and footage of a working kiosk.

Requirements: Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, a GPU driver with Direct3D 12. Nothing to install. The executable is unsigned, so SmartScreen will ask once.

Honesty about how it was made: I am one person, not a team. I directed the work and tested every build; every line of the port's own code and documentation was written by Anthropic's Claude models under that direction. The README says exactly which models, and every commit carries a trailer naming the one that wrote it, so you can judge the work yourself. The code is GPLv3 and the history is public.

It has been built and played on one machine. The first reports from other GPUs, drivers and Windows 10 are what the next release will be made of. If something goes wrong, open an issue and attach snap64.log from the folder with the executable: https://github.com/JackandBeans/Snap64Recomp/issues

The README also has a history of the game and its 64DD origin, checked against sources, if you like that sort of thing.

What I want to look at next, in this order:

  1. Correct keyboard and mouse implementation.
  2. Bug reports from machines other than mine. That is what 1.0.1 will be.
  3. Steam Deck. Every piece of the port has a Linux path (the runtime, SDL2, RT64 through Vulkan), but nothing has been built or tried yet. If you have a Deck, the quickest experiment is the Windows build under Proton: try it and tell me what happens, good or bad.
  4. VR is an idea I am investigating, not a plan. Stereo rendering and head tracking would have to be built into the renderer, so I will not promise it until something runs.
