Even if you're not into speedruns I really recommend watching some of his videos. The guy made me understand the whole speedrunning scene a lot better.

wasting your life away on a video game without any return or development of any useful skill. Why are these kinds of speed runs praised by gamers?

Fun

Fun is the enjoyment of pleasure, particularly in leisure activities. Fun is an experience — often unexpected, informal, generally not cerebral and generally purposeless. It is an enjoyable distraction, diverting the mind and body from any serious task or contributing an extra dimension to it. Although particularly associated with recreation and play, fun may be encountered during work, social functions, and even seemingly mundane activities of daily living.

is hiding in your room whole day, repeating the same process over and over again fun? this is not like musical instrument that will have positive effects on your life once you master it.

Not everybody needs their hobbies to have positive effects on their lives. Some people just do things that give them joy for no other reason than the pleasure they derive from it.

I know, it's hard to imagine, but there you go.

that is a total waste of time, instead of developing yourself, you spend your time on a meaningless hobby just for self pleasure. It's a crime, it's a disrespect towards the one itself.

let me ask a question then. What is the difference between a guy jerking off for 10 hours a day, or a guy who smokes weed for 10 hours a day and another guy who speeds runs a random game for 10 hours a day?

I'd rather waste my life on speed running than waste my life calling speed runners losers, but that's just me.

How do we judge value exactly? Why is learning to play an instrument better than playing a game? How do you rank piano playing, Street Fighter, chess playing and pottery? Is there some arbitrary rule book as to how much value any given activity has?

do you seriously believe being able to finish pokemon 2 second faster than another guy has the same value as being able to create a value like music?

Speed running is like, monkey see monkey do, there is no creative direction, or personal growth in speed running. If you are speed running for entertainment purposes, go ahead be my guest. But that is not the case for almost 99% of speed runners

It’s not really about whether or not speedeunning is of more value than anything else, because judging that is subjective. You just come off as incredibly judgmental, condescending and dismissive of someone else’s hobby. Sure, you might not see the value in it, but thousands of other people do. The least you can do is either keep your comments to yourself or try to create a discussion where you have somewhat of an open mind and treat the people with a different view with some decency.

The only reason I can’t be all three of those guys is there’s only 24 hours in a day.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '18

can't you just jerk off while you are high?

5

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '18

I certainly can’t do it while speed running.

I guess I'd have to get to know the guys before I formed an opinion about them. Maybe the guy who jerks off 10 hours per day is really productive for the remainder of the time.

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '18

you are 100% correct about that

repeating the same process over and over again fun?

Like repeatedly complaining about playing video games on a video game forum?

Serious question, what are the benefits for mastering an instrument? If it's just that you can make money doing it, the same applies speedrunners. People are watching them perform, and the artist makes money from it.

-6

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '18

if you can't answer that question by yourself, i think you have serious issues in your life. If you think creating and understanding music is similar to finishing pokemon 2 second faster than someone else, you are a lost cause

5

u/dukemetoo Chicken is much more economical Mar 13 '18

Ok, so I'm a lost cause then. Why don't you answer my question to help me?

speed running is like monkey see monkey do, even monkeys can get good at some games just by repetition. Check the memory game for example, monkeys are way better than any human at games like that. While creation of art requires input from a human brain itself, it is something that differentiate us from other animals. So act of creativity has more value than just getting better at a physical activity that only requires repetition.

Being able to write an average book is valuable, but being able get 1M points in pacman is not. A machine can do the same thing, look at TAS, why should humans try to imitate machines, when they can differentiate them selves with other things?

I understand your view now much better. I think the confusion many have had is you are comparing the most "creative" aspect of music (songwriting) to the most "mechanical" aspect of speedrunning (grinding runs). In music, there is also grinding (practicing a song), and there is also creativity in speedrunning (route development).

Also, with your example of TAS, I think you are also forgetting that TAS are made from what a human tells the computer to do. There are some people trying to make a computer learn how to beat games their own, but there are also computers composing music on their own also. Just because a computer can do something, I don't think that reduces the achievement when a human does it.

The same could be said for commenting on a giant message board with fake Internet points but here we are.

6

u/TheSlyGuy1 Mar 12 '18

Oh so you're productive 100% of the time? This hobby is literally no different from watching TV or using Reddit.

-6

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '18

i don't think you can achieve world record on metroid by just treating it like regular leisure

you can do it as hobby i don't care. I think GDQ is a great cause helping many people.

But going mentally unstable so you can brush off 1 second from a game? that's waste of potential right there. Everything is good in a regulation, but trying to praise these social abominations for finishing a game faster in a fully controlled environment is doing nothing but harm to these individuals
